「また悪い夢?」

“Another bad dream?”

「夢･･････そうか夢だよな?」

“Dream…I see, it’s a dream, right?”

そう自分に言い聞かせた途端、それはひどく現実感のない言葉に思えた。

As soon as he said that to himself, it seemed like a completely unrealistic statement.

「一炊の夢」という言葉が心をよぎった。

The words “empty dream” crossed my mind.

さっき見た世界が現実で、日本に帰ってきて、典子や明子と暮らしている自分が実夢なのではないか?

Could it be that the world he just saw was real, and that he was living in a real dream, returning to Japan and living with Noriko and Akiko?

そして自分はあの呉爾羅の惨劇の中で、今まさに死にかけているのではないか?もしくはとっくに死んでしまっている?

And isn’t he about to die in that GOJIRA tragedy? Or have you already died?

そう考えてしまいそうなほど、土気色の兵士達は未だに濃い気配となってあたりを漂っていたし、典子はどこか透けて消えていってしまいそうにはかなく思えた。

He almost thought so, as the dark-colored soldiers were still hovering around him with a strong presence, and Noriko seemed as if she might somehow disappear into thin air.

敷島はあえて聞いてみた。

Shikishima dared to ask.

「それとも、君が夢か?」

“Or are you a dream?”

「何言ってるの?大丈夫?」

“What are you talking about? Are you okay?”

言葉にしてしまうと、敷島にはますます典子が現実のものとは思えなくなっていった。

The more he put it into words, the less Noriko seemed to Shikishima to be real.

なんとか典子を実物だと確認したかった。敷島はすがりつくように典子をかき抱いた。

He wanted to somehow confirm that Noriko was real. Shikishima hugged Noriko tightly.

「なぁここは日本だよな。俺は確かに帰ってきたんだよな」

“Hey, this is Japan. I’m definitely back.”

そのまま押し倒そうとする敷島を、典子は反射的に蹴るように押しのけた。

Shikishima tried to push her down, but Noriko reflexively kicked him away.

「やめて!」

“Stop!”

押し返された敷島はバランスを失って位牌が置かれた木箱にぶつかった。油紙の包みが落ちて中から写真が散らばった。そこに写った整備兵とその家族達が一斉に敷島に視線を向けてきた。皆無言だったが、何を言いたいのか敷島にはすぐにわかった。

Shikishima was pushed back and lost his balance, colliding with a wooden box containing a memorial tablet. The oil paper package fell and the photos were scattered inside. The maintenance soldiers and their families in the photo all turned their eyes towards Shikishima. Everyone was silent, but Shikishima knew immediately what they wanted to say.

―― なぜまだ生き長らえている??

— Why are you still alive?

「わかっている。わかっているよ」

“I know. I know.”

敷島は体を丸め膝を抱え、幼子のように嗚咽を漏らした。

Shikishima curled up and hugged his knees, sobbing like a child.

1946年夏

Summer 1946

南太平洋の美しい環礁にひどく場違いな老朽艦達が停泊させられていた。

A group of aging ships are anchored on a beautiful atoll in the South Pacific.

旧帝国海軍の旗艦も務めたこともあった戦艦「長門」もその中にあった。

Among them was the battleship Nagato, which also served as the flagship of the former Imperial Navy.

それら数十隻の老朽艦達は、様々な方向に船首を向けて浮かびながら『その時』を待っているようだった。

These dozens of old ships seemed to be waiting for their “right moment” while floating with their bows pointing in various directions.

不穏な気配を察した海鳥の群れが、半ばくるったようにそこから離れるべく一斉に逃げていった。

A flock of seabirds, sensing a sign of unrest, fled en masse to get away from the area, half-turned.

空は青々と晴れ渡り、海は静かに波打っていた。

The sky was clear and blue, and the sea was rippling gently.

「その時」が来た。

“The time” has come.

海中に不意に太陽が出現した。

The sun suddenly appeared in the sea.

そこから生まれた衝撃波が、周りの水蒸気を一気に細かい氷の粒子に変化させた。

The shock wave created by this instantly transformed the surrounding water vapor into fine ice particles.

それは一瞬にしてどこまでもどこまでもふくれあがっていった。

In an instant, it swelled up everywhere.

長門をはじめとする老朽艦群は、瞬時にその塊の中に見えなくなった。

The old ships, including Nagato, instantly disappeared into the mass.

やがて巨大な蒸気の塊を突き破るように、特徴的なキノコ雲が立ち上がっていった。

Eventually, a distinctive mushroom cloud rose up, as if breaking through a huge mass of steam.

ビキニ環礁・クロスロード作戦・ベーカー実験。

原爆実験が行われたのだった。

An atomic bomb test was conducted.

その熱と衝撃と放射線は、近海の海生生物のことごとくを焼き尽くした。

The heat, shock, and radiation consumed all marine life in nearby waters.

逃げていた海鳥達もその羽を焼かれながら吹き飛ばされ、空中で灰になりながら舞い散っていった。

The seabirds that had fled were also blown away while their feathers were burned, turning to ash and scattering in the air.

そしてその近海に大戸島守備隊を全滅させたあの呉爾羅がいた。呉爾羅もまた、原子爆弾の激しい熱と放射線で焼き尽くされていた。皮膚が沸騰しめくれ上がり、肉は焦げ、眼球が真っ白に濁り･･･すさまじい痛みと苦しみが呉爾羅を襲った。普通の生物ならとうに絶命しているはずだった。しかし呉爾羅はそのたぐいまれな再生能力でそれを乗り切った。そしてその苦しみをもたらした存在にすさまじい怒りを感じながら徐々に体を再生していった。

And in the sea near there was the same GOJIRA who annihilated the garrison of Odo Island. GOJRA was also consumed by the intense heat and radiation from the atomic bomb. His skin boiled and rolled up, his flesh was scorched, his eyes turned cloudy white… tremendous pain and suffering attacked GOJIRA. If he were a normal creature, he would have died long ago. However, GOJIRA was able to overcome this with his unique regenerative ability. Gradually, his body was regenerated while feeling tremendous anger towards the people who had brought him suffering.

呉爾羅の再能力をもってしても、元の姿を取り戻すことはできなかった。体表の奥深くまで紛れ込んだ放射性物質は表皮の細胞にエラーに次ぐエラーを起こし、その見た目はゴツゴツとした岩のような様相に様変わりしていった。急激に成長していった背びれは雪の結晶のようにあらゆる方向に枝を伸ばしていった。それは層をなし、かきがらまるで何十年も海底で生き続けてきた牡蠣殻の様な姿に変わった。

Even with GOJIRA’s reincarnation ability, he was unable to regain his original form. The radioactive material that penetrated deep into the body surface caused error after error in the cells of the epidermis, changing its appearance to resemble that of a rugged rock. Its dorsal fin grew rapidly, and branches spread out in all directions like snowflakes. It formed layers, resembling oyster shells that had been living on the ocean floor for decades.

すでに大きかった体は暴走したかのようにぐんぐんと巨大化し、それは以前の姿を遙かにしのぐ巨体と化していった。

時は過ぎていった。

一週間ほどの新生丸での作業が続き、陸に上がると、三日間の休みが取れる。

After working on the Shinsei Maru for about a week, he was able to take three days off when he went ashore.

そのルーティーンで敷島は典子や明子と生活を共にしていた。

In this routine, Shikishima was living with Noriko and Akiko.

帰ってくると、四人分の洗濯袋を典子に渡す。

When he came back, he give Noriko a laundry bag for four people.

典子は新生丸の四人の洗濯を一気に引き受けていた。

Noriko took over all the laundry duties for Shinseimaru’s four people at once.

いつの間にかすっかり仲良くなった澄子からは洗濯の心得を教授してもらっているらしかった。

It seems that Sumiko, with whom she has become friends, is teaching her how to do laundry.

きれいにアイロンが当てられた典子の洗濯は、新生丸の仲間達にも評判だった。非番の日の敷島は、明子の相手をしたり、バラックを直したりしながら過ごす。そうこうしているうちに、結構な金が貯まってきていた。

Noriko’s neatly ironed laundry was well received by Shinseimaru’s friends. On his off-duty days, Shikishima spends his time dealing with Akiko and fixing the barracks. In the meantime, he had accumulated quite a bit of money.

まず敷島は中古のバイクを買った。

First, Shikishima bought a used motorcycle.

何か乗り物を運転したくなったのだ。

He wanted to drive some kind of vehicle.

バイクの後ろに典子を乗せて、町を走り抜けるのは、気持ちのいいものだった。

It felt so good to ride around town with Noriko on the back of my bike.

どんどん復興していく風景は、にわか作りの安っぽい建物であっても、なんだか新しい時代を運んでくるようで、敷島にはまぶしかった。

The sight of the city being rapidly rebuilt, even with its cheaply constructed buildings, seemed to be ushering in a new era, and Shikishima was dazzled by it.

敷島は自分のバラックも少しキチンとしようと思い立った。

Shikishima decided to spruce up his barracks a little.

本物の大工に頼んで、バラックの一部を本建築の建物に建て替えてもらった。

He asked a real carpenter to rebuild part of the barracks into a real building.

復興ラッシュでなかなか手に入らないのを無理言って調達してもらった白木で建てられた新居は、家と言うより、少し豪華な小屋という程度のものだったが、小さな台所も備えたそれを嬉しそうに触れてまわっている典子を見ていると、敷島は心の中に温かいものがあふれるのを感じていた。

The new house was built with plain wood that was hard to come by during the reconstruction rush, and was more like a luxurious hut than a house, but it was equipped with a small kitchen. As Shikishima looked at Noriko happily touching him, he felt something warm overflowing in his heart.

いつの間にか、小雪が舞う季節になっていた。

Before I knew it, it was the season for light snow.

その日、敷島が新しく建てた小さな家に新生丸のメンバーが集まった。

That day, the members of Shinseimaru gathered at Shikishima’s newly built small house.

ささやかな新築祝いが行われたのだ。

A small housewarming party was held.

「立派なもん建てたなぁ。金貯めた甲斐あったなぁ」

“You built something magnificent. It was worth saving the money.”

秋津が嬉しそうに褒める。

Akitsu praises happily.

子供好きらしい秋津は、二歳になった明子を膝に迎えてご満悦だった。

Akitsu, who seems to like children, was happy to have two-year-old Akiko in his lap.

水島もわくわくしながら家の内装を眺めている。

She and Mizushima are looking at the interior of her house with excitement.

流し台からお銚子を運んできた典子に、野田が自慢のカメラ、ライカM2を向けた。

Noda pointed his proud camera, the Leica M2, at Noriko, who brought the rice bowl from the sink.

「一枚いいですか?」

“Would you like one?”

「え、え、そんな、フィルムがもったいないですよ」

“Eh, eh, that’s such a waste of film.”

典子は遠慮したが、野田は撮影を強行した。

Noriko refrained, but Noda insisted on taking pictures.

「その笑顔! そのままそのまま」

“That smile! Just keep it that way.”

シャッターが押され、典子のその瞬間が銀塩フィルムに焼き付けられた。

The shutter was pressed, and Noriko’s moment was printed on silver halide film.

その様子を見て、秋津がからかった。

Seeing this, Akitsu teased him.

「オイ学者、典ちゃんに惚れんじゃねえぞォ」

“Hey scholar, don’t fall in love with Nori-chan.”

「何言ってるんですか。典子さんは人妻ですよ人妻」

“What are you talking about? Noriko-san is a married woman. A married woman.”

「やめてくださいよお。私、奥さんじゃないんです」

“Please stop. I’m not your wife.”

そう微笑んで去っていく典子を見送りながら、一同は困惑の表情を敷島に向けた。

While seeing Noriko leave with a smile, everyone looked at Shikishima with puzzled expressions.

―― 奥さんじゃ・・・ない? ——

— Isn’t that your wife? —

思わず秋津が敷島に問いただした。

Akitsu couldn’t help but ask Shikishima.

「どういうことだ?」

“What does it mean?”

「勝手に居着いたんです。行くところがないからって置いてるだけで…」

“I just stayed there on my own. I just left it here because I had nowhere to go.”

「じゃあこの子は?」

“Then what about this child?”

「あいつの連れ子です。とは言っても血はつながってなくて、空襲のさなかに託された孤児らしいんですが」

“She’s my stepchild. However, we’re not related by blood, and she seems to be an orphan who was left in the care of her during an air raid.”

野田が敷島をまじまじと見た。

Noda looked at Shikishima seriously.

「へーこのご時世に美談じゃないですか」

“Wow, isn’t it a beautiful story in this day and age?”

「後先考えてないだけですよ」

“I just don’t think about what’s next.”

そう言い捨てた敷島の言葉に、会話の内容はわからずとも、何か不安な気持ちになったらしい明子が言った。

Shikishima’s dismissive words made Akiko feel uneasy, even though she didn’t understand the content of the conversation.

「とうちゃん」

“Tou-chan”

その呼びかけに敷島が一瞬戸惑ったような顔になった。そしてすぐに残酷に言い放った。

Shikishima looked confused for a moment at that call. And immediately he spoke out cruelly.

「明子、言ったろう。俺はお前の父ちゃんじゃないぞ」

“Akiko, I told you. I’m not your father.”

明子はその言葉に困惑し、目に大粒の涙を浮かべた。

Akiko was confused by those words, and large tears welled up in her eyes.

水島が慌てた。

Mizushima panicked.

「敷島、それはまずいんじゃないか?」

“Shikishima, isn’t that bad?”

それが合図だったかのように、明子が大きな声を上げて泣き始めた。

As if that was a cue, Akiko started crying loudly.

秋津が慌ててなだめる。

Akitsu hurriedly tries to calm her down.

「明子、泣かないでいいからな。おじちゃんがお父ちゃんにちゃんと言ってあげるからな」

“Akiko, don’t cry. Uncle will tell your father properly.”

野田も同調した。

Noda agreed.

「実に不健全だ」

“It’s really unhealthy.”

秋津が明子との約束を果たすべく、説得にかかった。

Akitsu tried to persuade Akiko to fulfill her promise.

「お前、親子共々縁あってこうして引き取ったんだからさ、この際覚悟決めろ覚悟」おどけた水島が両手で自分を抱きしめて、声色を使った。

“You and your child are related to each other, so I adopted you like this, so make up your mind, be prepared.” A playful Mizushima hugged her with both hands and used her tone of voice.

「幸せにしてぇ～」

“Make me happy~”

— Happiness —

その言葉に敷島は過剰に反応してしまった。

Shikishima overreacted to those words.

「黙れ!そういうのは良いんだよ」

“Shut up! That’s fine.”

普段穏やかな敷島の怒号に、場の空気が一瞬で凍り付いた。気まずい空気の中、秋津が吐き捨てるようにぼやいた。

The usually calm Shikishima’s angry voice instantly froze the atmosphere. In the awkward atmosphere, Akitsu grumbled as if to vent.

「なんでえ」

“Why?”

そのやりとりを洗い物をしていた典子は、背中を向けながら聞いているのだった。

Noriko, who was washing the dishes, listened to this exchange with her back turned to him.

気まずい空気のまま宴会はお開きになった。皆が帰ったあと、敷島は少し酔った体を引きずるようにして、油紙に包まれた写真を改めて見に行った。

The party ended with an awkward atmosphere. After everyone left, Shikishima dragged himself a little drunk and went to look at the photo wrapped in oiled paper again.

それらの写真からは、やはり呪詛の言葉が聞こえてくるようだった。

From those photographs, it was as if he could hear the words of a curse.

敷島の背中で、典子が努めて明るい声で言った。

From behind Shikishima, Noriko said in a cheerful voice.

笑っちゃいますよね皆さん。浩さんと私、そういうんじゃないのにね」

Everyone is laughing. Hiroshi-san and I aren’t like that.”

言葉の明るさが逆に典子の気持ちをわかりやすく伝えてきて、敷島はそちらを向くことができなかった。

On the contrary, the brightness of her words conveyed Noriko’s feelings in an easy-to-understand manner, and Shikishima was unable to turn his attention to her.
