驚いている澄子に、明子が心配そうに聞いた。

Akiko asked worriedly to Sumiko who was surprised.

「お父ちゃん、帰ってくる?」

澄子はたまらず明子を抱きしめた。

「大丈夫。大丈夫だからね」

“It’s okay. It’s okay.”

そう言いながら、澄子は敷島の覚悟を思ってひどく動揺していた。

三浦沖に特設掃海艇が停泊していた。甲板に立つ見張りが双眼鏡を覗いていた時、ガイガー計数管を供えたブイが激しく反応し始めた。その周りには次々と深海魚が揚がってきた。

ゴジラが予定よりかなり早く現れたのだった。

水中拡声器を装備した駆潜艇が一斉に出動した。その後ろにワイヤーで引かれた水中拡声器からは銀座襲撃時に録音されたゴジラの禍々しい咆吼が流され始めた。

その雪風甲板には野田と秋津の姿があった。

「本当は敷さんにも飛んでほしくはないんです。敷さんって特攻の生き残りじゃなですか･･････無茶しそうで･･････」

「明子がいるんだ。あいつはきっと帰ってくるよ」

“Akiko is here. She’ll definitely come back.”

その時だった。ドンと鈍い音が沖合から聞こえたかと思うと、巨大な火だるまと化した何かが長い放物線を描いて飛んできた。それはまっすぐ本部が置かれた港湾ビル激突した。崩れ去った港湾ビルは、たちまちのうちに火に包まれた。

It was at that time. I heard a dull thud from offshore, and then something that turned into a giant fireball flew in a long parabola. It crashed straight into the port building where the headquarters was located. The collapsed port building was quickly engulfed in flames.

そのゴジラからの贈り物に、その場の一同の表情が凍りついた。

思い出したように空襲警報が鳴り響いた。

「水中拡声器部隊、壊滅!ゴジラが相模湾に侵入!海神隊、直ちに出航せよ!」

その時、甲板から何事かに気づいた秋津が沖合を指さした。

At that moment, Akitsu noticed something from the deck and pointed offshore.

そこには波をかき分けて走る巨大な背びれがあった。

ゴジラだ。

It’s Godzilla.

「オイあれ」

“Hey, that’s it”

「もうこんな所に?」

港湾の入り口に仕掛けられた機雷が次々と爆発するが、ゴジラはまるで意に介さずまっすぐ港めがけて優雅に泳いでいた。

The mines planted at the entrance to the port explode one after another, but Godzilla gracefully swims straight toward the port, as if he doesn’t care.

「このままでは上陸してしまう!」

“At this rate, he’ll land!”

その頃、表に引っ張り出された震電は、アイドリングを行っていた。

At that time, Shinden was pulled out and was idling.

久しぶりに回しているとは思えないほど、震電のエンジンは問題なく回っていた。

Shinden’s engine was running smoothly, hard to believe that it had been running for a long time.

その時、軍港から無線連絡が入った

「ゴジラ、絶対防衛ラインを突破!上陸を開始しましたァ」

待ったなしの戦局となってきた。

敷島はそう宣言すると、格納庫前に広がる滑走路に震電をタキシングさせ始めた。

After Shikishima declared this, he began taxiing the Shinden onto the runway that spread out in front of the hangar.

敷島は追ってきた橘達に敬礼すると、エンジンレバーをフルスロットルに入れ、滑走を始めた。

Shikishima saluted Tachibana and the others who were following him, then put his engine lever at full throttle and began to ski.

やがて震電はその奇妙な機体を舞い上がらせた。

Eventually, Shinden made the strange aircraft soar.

巨大なプロペラのトルクが大きすぎて、震電はやや左に傾く傾向があるようだった。かじ敷島はわずかに当て舵を当てて、機体を水平に保った。

The huge propeller’s torque was so great that Shinden seemed to have a tendency to lean slightly to the left. Kajishikishima used a slight rudder to keep the aircraft level.

かなりのじゃじゃ馬だ

そう思いながらも戦争末期のものとは明らかに性能の異なる、ハイオクタンの燃料の効果はすさまじく、おもしろいようにスピードが上がった。うなず敷島は満足そうに頷くと、ゴジラに向かってさらにスピードを上げた。

Even as I thought so, the high-octane fuel, whose performance was clearly different from that used at the end of the war, had a tremendous effect, and my speed increased in an interesting way. Shikishima nodded in satisfaction and sped up even more towards Godzilla.

格納庫前では戻ってきた橘達が、敷島が残していった飛行機雲を見上げていた。

軍港はパニックになっていた。相模湾沖で迎え撃つはずのゴジラが予想を大きく裏切るスピードで上陸しようとしているのだ。

その一歩一歩が起こす波の余波に、グラグラと翻弄される雪風の上で、野田達がゴジラを見つめていた。

やがてゴジラは飛んできた駆潜艇と共に、燃えている港湾事務所の建物を踏み潰しながら、その巨体を港に持ち上げた。そして逃げ惑う人々をまるで気にかけない様子で内陸に向かって歩き始めた。

Eventually, Godzilla, along with a submarine destroyer, trampled the burning port office building and lifted its huge body into the port. Then he started walking inland, seemingly not caring about the people fleeing.

「どうするんだ。計画総崩れだ」

“What are we going to do? The plan is completely destroyed.”

「とにかく、出港しましょう。沈める海域は最大効果が得られる相模トラフでなけれかば万全は期せません。誘導は敷さんの震電に懸けるしかない」

“Anyway, let’s set sail. We can’t be sure unless we sink in the Sagami Trough, where we can get the maximum effect. We have no choice but to rely on Shiki-san’s Shinden to guide us.”

蜂の巣をつついたようになった軍港に、港湾放送が鳴り響いていた。「直ちに出港せよ。繰り返す海神隊全艦艇は直ちに出港せよ」

The port announcement was blaring in the military port, which had become like a beehive. “Depart immediately. Repeatedly, all ships of the Sea God Corps must depart immediately.”

夕風、櫻、雪風、響、この四隻が艦隊を組んで作戦海域に向かう姿は壮観であった。しかし、肝心のゴジラが誘導できない限り、この艦達は戦いようがないのだ。そう思うと、引き揚げ船に改装された時、外されたそれぞれの船の主砲跡がさらに寂しく見えた。

It was a spectacular sight to see these four ships, Yukaze, Sakura, Yukikaze, and Hibiki, forming a fleet and heading to the operational area. However, unless Godzilla can guide them, these ships will have no way of fighting. 作戦本部は雪風のブリッジにあった。通信係が野田を呼んだ。

ブリッジのスピーカーからは敷島の声が聞こえてきた。

「敷島です。離陸に成功しました。このままゴジラを作戦海域に誘導します」

“This is Shikishima. The takeoff was successful. We will continue to guide Godzilla to the operational area.”

「こちらも間もなく準備完了する」

“This will be ready soon as well.”

「聞こえてんのか敷島!」

“Can you hear me, Shikishima?”

「ではできるだけ早く作戦海域に!」

“Then get to the operational area as soon as possible!”

通信マイクを奪うように秋津が割り込んできた。

Akitsu barged in to grab the communication microphone.

「いいか敷島、無茶すんじゃねえぞ。明子をひとりぼっちにしたら許さねえからな」

“Listen, Shikishima, don’t be so reckless. I won’t forgive you if you leave Akiko alone.”

敷島からの返答はなかった。

There was no response from Shikishima.

なんの前触れもなく、無線はぶつりと切れた。

Without any warning, the radio suddenly went out.

「あの野郎、無視しやがった!」

“That bastard ignored me!”

その対応に野田は不安を募らせた。

Noda became worried about this response.

「･･････敷さん、まさか」

“…Mr. Shiki, no way.”

震電のコックピットでは、敷島が下界に広がる人々の暮らしを眺めていた。山間部に広がる家々の一つ一つそれぞれに明子が、典子が、敷島がいて、日々の暮らしを営んでいるのだ。

In the cockpit of the Shinden, Shikishima watched the lives of people spread out below. Akiko, Noriko, and Shikishima live in each of the houses spread out in the mountains, and they live their daily lives.

これをゴジラに破壊させるわけにはいかない。

決意を新たに敷島は前を向いた。その彼方に小さくゴジラが見えてきた。

With renewed determination, Shikishima faced forward. A small Godzilla appeared in the distance.

泣き疲れて眠ってしまった明子を前に途方に暮れている澄子の所に、電報局の配達員がやってきた。

A delivery man from the telegraph office comes to Sumiko, who is at a loss as Akiko falls asleep from crying.

澄子が受け取っ電報の中には驚愕することが記されていた。

The telegram that Sumiko received stated that she was shocked.

それを持つ澄子の手は震え員がやってきた。

Sumiko’s hand trembled as she held it.

そして敷島が選んだであろう行く末を思って、澄子は呼吸が荒くなった。

Sumiko’s breathing became labored as she thought about the fate Shikishima would have chosen for her.

「浩一さん･･････」

“Koichi-san…”

鎌倉の上空に震電が到達した時、すでにゴジラはその辺り一帯の民家を踏み潰していた。

By the time the shockwave reached the sky above Kamakura, Godzilla had already trampled houses in the area.

敷島は思いきって30ミリ砲を連射しながらゴジラの鼻先をかすめてみた。案の定ゴジラは30ミリ砲ではまるでダメージを受けている様子はなかったが、震電への反応は素早かった。

Shikishima took the plunge and fired a 30mm cannon at Godzilla’s nose. As expected, Godzilla did not appear to have been damaged by the 30mm cannon, but his reaction to the shockwave was quick.

見事に震電を目標に捉えて、通常の二倍のスピードで顔を突き出し、震電に食らいつこうとした。

He successfully targeted Shinden and stuck his head out at twice the normal speed, trying to get hit by Shinden.

敷島はかすかに機体を傾けることで、ギリギリゴジラの襲撃を避けた。

Shikishima narrowly avoided Godzilla’s attack by slightly tilting his aircraft.

その瞬間、今度は大きく振られた尾が、震電のコックピットいっぱいに迫った。

At that moment, its tail swung wildly and approached Shinden’s cockpit.

「危ない!」

“Dangerous!”

とっさにフラップをおろし、エアブレーキのように使って、やや失速状態にすることで、かろうじて尾の攻撃もやり過ごすことができた。

By quickly lowering the flap and using it like an air brake, he was able to stall a bit and barely survive the tail attack.

模擬空戦時にひたすらトレーニングした敵の弾道から逃れるための挙動が、無意識のうちに自分を救ったことに敷島は驚いていた。

Shikishima was surprised to find that the behavior he had trained to avoid the enemy’s trajectory during the mock air battle unconsciously saved him.

しつこいハエのようにまとわりつく震電を、ゴジラは攻撃目標であると完全に決めたようだった。

Godzilla seemed to have completely decided that Shinden, who was clinging to him like a persistent fly, was the target of his attack.

ゴジラはついに進路を変え、相模湾に向かって歩き始めた。

Godzilla finally changed course and started walking toward Sagami Bay.

相模湾の雪風艦橋では秋津や野田が大型の双眼鏡を覗きながら、その様子を観察していた。

At the Yukikaze Bridge in Sagami Bay, Akitsu and Noda were observing the situation through large binoculars.

ゴジラが進路を変え、ついに海に入ると、秋津が感嘆の声を漏らした。

When Godzilla changed course and finally entered the ocean, Akitsu let out an exclamation.

「ははーたいしたもんだ。ゴジラそうとうお冠だぞ。追ってきてる」

“Haha, that’s a big deal. Godzilla has a band temper. He’s chasing me.”

「俺達の番ですね」

“It’s our turn.”

堀田が海神作戦各部署に檄を飛ばした。

Hotta sent a message to each department of the Sea God operation.

「全回路接続完了」

“All circuits connected”

各所から伝送管を伝って声が返ってきた。

Voices came back from various places through the transmission tubes.

「ケーブル良し!」

“Good cable!”

「フロンボンベ良し!」

“Freon cylinder is good!”

「全艦最終点検急げ!」

“Hurry up for final inspection of all ships!”

「浮上装置、装備完了しました。これより最終確認に移ります」

“The levitation device has been equipped. We will now proceed to the final confirmation.”

四隻の巡洋艦がゴジラに向かって艦首を揃えた。

The four cruisers aligned their bows toward Godzilla.

ゴジラがついに江ノ島の脇から巨大な水しぶきを上げながら海に再び入った。

Godzilla finally reentered the ocean from the side of Enoshima, making a huge splash.

挑発する震電を追いながら背びれと頭を海上に出した状態で、ゴジラは悠々と体をくねらせながら泳ぎ始めた。

With her dorsal fin and head exposed above the sea, Godzilla began to swim, slowly twisting her body while following the taunting shockwaves.
