機雷は波に翻弄されつつも大きく動くたびにゴジラの牙に阻まれ、口の中にかろうじて留まっていた。

しかし飛び出すのも時間の問題に思えた。

野田達が顔を低くすると、13ミリ機銃の弾丸がゴジラの口中の機雷めがけて撃ち込まれた。

As Noda and his friends lowered their heads, a bullet from a 13mm machine gun was fired into the mine in Godzilla’s mouth.

敷島がくるったように機銃を撃ち込み続けている。ゴジラが怒って飛びかかろうと構えたその瞬間、機銃弾の一つが奇跡的に理想的な角度で機雷に命中した。

その上から大量の水が滝のように降り注いだ。

息もない水の降下の中で敷島はのたうち回っていた。破壊された船尾の一部が頭に直撃し、大きな裂傷を作っていた。

Shikishima was writhing in the breathless water falling. Part of the destroyed stern had hit him in the head, causing a large gash.

水島も左腕に破片を受け、骨折していた。新生丸も後部をすっかり失って、そこかの猛烈な浸水が始まっていた。

Mizushima was also hit by shrapnel in his left arm, causing a fracture. Shinsei Maru also completely lost her rear end, and heavy flooding began in that area.

どんどん沈んでいく新生丸にしがみつく格好で、皆が水煙の中からゴジラが現れるのを待った。

今の攻撃でゴジラにダメージを与えられていなければ、まず新生丸のメンバーは助からない。

しかしその直後、ゴジラの驚異的な再生能力が発動した。

そして吹っ飛んだはずの目や牙までがほぼ元通りに再生されると、ゴジラは意識をおたけ取り戻し、上体を大きく海上に持ち上げると、雄叫びを上げた。

When his eyes and fangs, which were supposed to have been blown off, were regenerated almost to their original state, Godzilla regained consciousness, lifted his upper body over the sea, and let out a roar.

そしてそれは新生丸が完膚なきまでに破壊されることを意味していた。

ゴジラの上体が大きく動き、その巨大な顎が新生丸をくわえ込んだ･････と思ったその刹那、風切り音と共に、幾つもの爆炎がゴジラを包んだ。

Godzilla’s upper body moved dramatically, and at that moment, when I thought that the giant jaws had taken Shinsei Maru into its mouth, a number of explosions of flame enveloped Godzilla along with the sound of wind.

「なんだ!」

“What!”

野田が風切り音の先を見た時、そこには信じられない光景があった。

When Noda looked beyond the wind noise, he saw an incredible sight.

重巡「高雄」がそこに到着していた。

The heavy cruiser “Takao” had arrived there.

怒りの咆吼をあげたゴジラは次の砲撃準備を始めた高雄めがけ、大きく方向転換し泳ぎ始めた。

高雄の正確な砲撃が水に潜ったゴジラを襲う。

爆雷のように水中爆発する高雄の砲撃の隙間をかいくぐって、ゴジラは高雄本体めがけて進んでいった。

そう敷島がつぶやいた直後、高雄の真横でクジラがジャンプするかのごとくゴジラが空中に舞い上がった。

そして落下の力を利用して、高雄の艦橋を巨大な顎と爪とで大破させていった。ブリッジにいた艦長をはじめとする上官クラスの人々が、一瞬で高雄の艦上構造物もろとも押しつぶされた。

ほぼゼロ距離からの一斉射撃にさすがのゴジラも耐えきれず、体から何本も煙を立たせながら海中に倒れ、水没していった。

As expected, even Godzilla could not withstand the volley of fire from almost zero distance, and she fell into the sea with smoke rising from her body, submerging in the water.

ついに高雄が満身創痍になりながらも、ゴジラを倒したのだ。

In the end, Takao defeated Godzilla, even though he was covered in wounds.

甲板上で生き残った高雄の乗組員が、一斉に雄叫びを上げた。

The surviving crew members of Takao on deck let out a roar in unison.

シンガポールからの苦しい航海。そして瞬時に奪われたブリッジにいた艦長達。

It had difficult voyage from Singapore. And the captains on the bridge were captured instantly.

そういった一切が報われた瞬間だった。

It was the moment when everything like that paid off.

死闘ともいえる戦いを見ていた敷島達も、なんとかゴジラを仕留めることができた高雄に惜しみない賛辞を送っていた。

Shikishima and his friends, who were watching what could be described as a deadly battle, generously praised Takao for managing to take down Godzilla.

But……

突然高雄の下の海中が青く輝きだした。

Suddenly, the sea beneath Takao began to glow blue.

それは次々と数珠つなぎに光っていった。

One after another like a string of beads began to glow.

青い光の竜が姿を現したような神々しい風景だった。

It was a divine scene, as if a dragon of blue light had appeared.

野田が何か本能的な恐怖を感じながら、それを見ていた。

「･･･なんだ?」

直後、水中から光の柱が一本、高雄の真ん中を貫いた。

それは徐々に太くなり、やがて高雄はその光を中心に大爆発を起こした。

It gradually became thicker, and eventually Takao exploded with the light at its center.

弾薬庫に引火したというレベルの爆発ではなかった。高雄を構成している鉄が、熱線のあまりの高温に一気に気体へと変わったために起きた、いわば個体の水蒸気爆発のような、そんな尋常ではない爆発だった。

The explosion was not large enough to ignite the ammunition depot. The iron that made up Takao was suddenly turned into a gas by the extremely high temperatures of the heat rays, and it was an unusual explosion, like a solid steam explosion.

紅蓮の炎に包まれながら高雄は、みるみるうちにすべての乗組員を乗せたまま、ほんのわずかな時間の中で、引きずり込まれるように海中に消えていった。

Takao was engulfed in crimson flames and disappeared into the sea in a very short time, with all the crew on board.

あとには高雄爆発の余韻の煙が海面に漂っているだけだった。

All that remained was the lingering smoke of the Takao explosion floating on the sea surface.

そこにゴジラがゆっくりと浮かび上がってきた。

Godzilla slowly appeared there.

その体は至る所が赤く燃えるようにただれていた。

His body was sore and red all over.

あの数珠つなぎの青い光はなんだったのか?そして高雄はなぜ瞬時にこの世から消滅してしまったのか?

What was that string of blue lights? And why did Takao disappear from this world in an instant?

そしてゴジラに何が起きて、これほどまでにダメージを負っているのか･･････

And what happened to Godzilla and caused him so much damage?

ゴジラはそのダメージのためか、これ以上の破壊行動を断念したかのように、身を翻し、巨大な水柱を残して泳ぎ去っていった。

Perhaps due to the damage caused, Godzilla turned around and swam away, leaving a huge column of water behind.

ほぼ残骸と化した新生丸は、そこにしがみついた敷島達と共にかろうじて浮いていた。

The Shinsei Maru, which was reduced to almost a wreckage, was barely afloat with Shikishima and the others clinging to it.

敷島は意識を失った

Shikishima lost consciousness.

目覚めると敷島は病室にいた。

When Shikishima woke up, he was in the hospital room.

意識を取り戻したのを見て、秋津と野田、左手に添え木をした水島が一斉に覗き込んだ。

Seeing that he had regained consciousness, Akitsu, Noda, and Mizushima, who had a splint on his left hand, all looked into the room.

秋津が安堵の息をつきながら言った。

Akitsu said with a sigh of relief.

「やっと目覚めたか」

“Did you finally wake up?”

「ここは?」

“Here?”

「横須賀の病院だ、あの後すぐ搬送されたんだ」

“It’s a hospital in Yokosuka. They were taken to the hospital right after that.”

「海進丸や高雄の人達は?」

“What about Kaishin Maru and the people of Takao?”

秋津は黙って首を振った。

Akitsu shook his head silently.

あの惨劇は沢山の人命を奪っていったのだ。

That tragedy claimed many lives.

「･･････ゴジラは、奴はどうしたんです?」

“…Godzilla, what happened to him?”

その問いには野田が答えた。

Noda answered that question.

「あのまま消息不明です」

“As it is, his whereabouts are unknown.”

「ゴジラは東京方面に向かっていました。早く避難指示を出さないと大変なことになります」

“Godzilla was heading towards Tokyo. If we don’t issue an evacuation order soon, we’ll be in big trouble.”

「政府はこの情報を国民に伏せています」

“The government is hiding this information from the people.”

「なんで直ぐに国民に周知させないんですか」

“Why didn’t they inform the public immediately?”

「恐らく混乱を恐れてのことでしょう」

“Probably out of fear of confusion.”

「混乱?そんなことを言っている場合じゃない。今のうちに避難を始めないと!」

“Confusion? This is not the time to be talking about things like that. We need to start evacuation now!”

「予想される大混乱の責任を誰も取りたくないんでしょうね」

“I guess no one wants to take responsibility for the expected havoc.”

秋津が吐き捨てるように言った。

Akitsu told him to spit it out.

「情報統制はこの国のお家芸だ」

“Information control is this country’s specialty.”

そこに血相を変えた典子が、明子を伴って病室に駆け込んできた。

Noriko, whose appearance had changed, rushed into the hospital room with Akiko.

「浩さん!」

“Hiroshi-san!”

「慌てないでください。この通りたいしたことないんですから」

“Don’t panic. It’s not a big deal.”

バラックに帰ってきても、典子はずっと敷島を責めているような目で見つめていた。

典子の追及が鋭さを増していく。

Noriko’s pursuit becomes more acute.

「ずっと思っていました。浩さんは生きるのが辛そうだって･･････何かを隠しているって。そのことに関わりのあることがあったんじゃないですか?」

“I’ve always thought that Hiroshi-san seems to have a hard time living… that he’s hiding something. Isn’t there something connected to that?”

典子の鋭い指摘に敷島は焦った。

Shikishima was irritated by Noriko’s sharp point.

「何が浩さんをそんなに苦しめているの?」

“What’s causing Hiroshi so much trouble?”

典子さんには関係のないことです」

This has nothing to do with Noriko.”

思わず声を荒らげた敷島に、刺激されたかのように典子の感情がほとばしった。

Noriko’s emotions overflowed as if stimulated by Shikishima’s involuntarily raising voice.

「そんなこと言わないでよ。あなたに助けてもらって、今日まで一緒に生きてきて、それなのに私はあなたの人生にこれっぽっちも関われないの?」

“Don’t say that. You helped me and we lived together until today, yet I can’t be involved in your life in the slightest?”

返す言葉がない。

I have no words to answer.

「あなたが何かを背負っているなら、少しは私にも分けてほしいんです」

“If you’re burdened with something, I want you to share some of it with me.”

敷島はなんとかこの状況から逃れようとしたが、典子の視線の強さに、それが不可能であることを察した。

Shikishima tried to escape from this situation, but the intensity of Noriko’s gaze made him realize that it was impossible.

「俺は特攻から逃げた人間です」

“I am a person who escaped from a special attack.”

「え?」

“Picture?”

「出撃の日、飛行機が故障したふりをして、大戸島にある不時着場に降りました」

“On the day of the sortie, I pretended that the plane had broken down and landed at an emergency landing site on Odo Island.”

敷島は仏壇にしてある木箱に向かうと、油紙に包まれた何枚もの写真を持ってきて、典子に見せた。

Shikishima went to the wooden box that was set up as a Buddhist altar and brought out a number of photographs wrapped in oiled paper and showed them to Noriko.

「大戸島の整備兵の人達が持っていたものです。皆、亡くなりました」

“It belonged to the maintenance soldiers on Odo Island. They all died.”

「･･･何があったんですか?」

“…What happened?”

「不時着したその夜、巨大な恐竜のような怪物がやってきたんです。俺は零戦の機銃でそれを撃ち殺してくれと頼まれました。でも俺は･･････また逃げたんです。その結果、彼らは怪物に殺されました。皆、家族に会えたはずの人達です」

“The night I crash-landed, a giant dinosaur-like monster came to me. I was asked to shoot it with my Zero Fighter’s machine gun. But I… ran away again. As a result, they were killed by the monster. They were all people who could have found their families.”

今までどうしても聞くことができなかった写真の由来を知って、典子は息を呑んだ。

Noriko gasped when she learned the origin of the photo, something she had never been able to ask about until now.

「そのかたきに･･････ゴジラと呼んでいるそれがまた現れたんです」

“Just then…the thing we call Godzilla reappeared.”

「ゴジラ?」

“Godzilla?”

「でもまた何もできなかった」

いったんあふれ出た敷島の感情は、止められない濁流のように流れ出した。
