Born in 1964 in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. After graduating from Asagaya Art College, he joined Shirogumi Co., Ltd. in 1986. He made his directorial debut in 2000 with “Juvenile.” He is considered one of Japan’s leading film directors.

Summer 1945

アクリルガラスを通した南国の太陽光線がじりじりと敷島浩一の肩を焼いていた。零式艦上戦闘機型の栄52型エンジンは軽快に駆動音を響かせている。

The rays of the tropical sun shining through the acrylic glass were slowly burning Koichi Shikishima’s shoulders. The Sakae 52 engine of the Type 0 carrier-based fighter makes a light sound.

本来ならそろそろ敵艦を見つけて突っ込んでいる‥‥‥あるいは敵の分厚い対空砲火にバラバラにされて海に散っている頃だった。

Normally, they would have found the enemy ship and rammed it…or they would have been torn apart by the enemy’s heavy anti-aircraft fire and scattered over the sea.

おそらく同時に南方に出撃した戦友達は一人も生きてはいないだろう。

Probably none of the comrades who went south at the same time are still alive.

だが敷島は途中で大きくUターンしていた。このまま直進すれば不時着基地のある大戸島が見えてくるはずだった。

However, Shikishima made a big U-turn on the way. If he continued straight ahead, he should be able to see Odo Island, where the emergency landing base was located.

言い逃れが可能かどうかはわからなかった。だがエンジン不調を訴えれば、その調査に一日や二日は取られるはずだった。

I didn’t know if it was possible to get away with it. However, if they complained of an engine malfunction, it would have taken them a day or two to investigate.

次の一手はその間に考えればいい。

He can think about his next move during that time.

この戦争は間もなく終わるはずだ。それまで生き延びさえすれば、母親との約束は果たせる。

This war should end soon. As long as he survives until then, he can fulfill his promise to his mother.

大戸島には整備兵しかいないはずだった。士官よりも気性は穏やかなのではないかというわずかな期待もあった。

There were supposed to be only maintenance soldiers on Odo Island. There was a slight hope that he might have a gentler temper than the officer.

間もなく水平線の奥から大戸島が見えはじめた。しばらくはその島影はなかなか変化しなかったが、少し大きくなり始めたら、滑走路が見えるまではあっという間だった。

Soon, Odo Island began to appear from behind the horizon. For a while, the shadow of the island did not change much, but once it started to get a little bigger, it was only a matter of time before he could see the runway.

遠くからではわからなかったが、島の滑走路はあちこちに爆弾跡の穴があって、としろものてもまともに着陸できる代物ではなかった。

It wasn’t obvious from a distance, but the island’s airstrip was littered with holes from bombs, making it impossible to land properly even on a plane.

敷島は一回島の上空で旋回して、着陸コースを決めた。

Shikishima circled once over the island and decided on a landing course.

爆弾しぼ覚悟を決めて敷島はスロットルを絞りながらゆっくりと降下した。後は無我夢中だった。

Shikishima slowly descended while squeezing the throttle, determined to prepare for a bomb. After that, he was completely absorbed.

フラップと垂直尾翼を器用に使って、なんとか大きな爆弾跡を避けてようやく敷島機は停止した。

By deftly using the flaps and vertical stabilizer, the Shikishima aircraft managed to avoid the large bomb scar and finally came to a halt.

滑走路のやや左側に降り、そこからしばらくして右にそれる。そのコースをとれば、跡を避けることができるかも知れない。

It descends slightly to the left of the runway, then swerves to the right after a while. If he took that course, he might be able to avoid the marks.

もう数センチで手前に広がる大きなすり鉢型の爆弾穴に落ちるところだった。

He was just a few centimeters away from falling into a large mortar-shaped bomb hole that spread out in front of him.

そうしたら、まだ燃料の残っているこの機は爆発炎上していたかもしれない。敷島は安堵の息をつくと同時に、全身から大量の汗が流れ落ちるのを感じていた。それは「生きている」という確かな証左に他ならなかった。

If that happened, the plane, which still had fuel left in it, might have burst into flames. Shikishima breathed a sigh of relief and at the same time felt a large amount of sweat dripping down his body. It was nothing but solid proof that he was alive.

指揮所の近くで休んでいた敷島のところに、整備兵の上官らしき男が近づいてきた。その後ろでは敷島機を点検していた整備兵達が、敷島を責める様な目つきで眺めていた。

While Shikishima was resting near the command post, a man who appeared to be a superior officer of a maintenance soldier approached him. Behind them, the maintenance soldiers who were inspecting Shikishima’s aircraft looked at him with accusing eyes.

……あっけなくばれたか。

…He was suddenly exposed.

だが……あの滑走路から戦闘機を離陸させることは不可能だ。

But…it’s impossible to take off a fighter jet from that runway.

つまり敷島機は二度と飛び上がることができないのだ。

In other words, the Shikishima aircraft would never be able to take off again.

たとえどれほど責められようとも、しらを切り通せば戦争が終わるまではこの島に居座ることはできそうだった。

No matter how much he was accused, it seemed like if he could survive, he would be able to stay on this island until the war was over.

「敷島少尉ですよね。筑波海軍航空隊の整備部にいた橘です。覚えておられますか?」

“I’m Ensign Shikishima, right? I’m Tachibana from the maintenance department of the Tsukuba Naval Air Corps. Do you remember me?”

確かにそんな整備員がいたのを敷島は思い出した。整備兵達は頼りがいる橘を慕っていたように記憶していた。

Shikishima remembered that there was indeed such a maintenance worker. The maintenance soldiers remembered Tachibana as being someone they could rely on and adored.

旧知の人間にこの状況で出会うのはなかなかのバツの悪さだった。

It was quite embarrassing to meet someone he had known for a long time under these circumstances.

それを隠すように敷島は努めて明るく振る舞った。

Shikishima tried to hide it by acting cheerfully.

「……橘さん! もちろんです。その節はお世話になりました」

“…Tachibana-san! Of course. Thank you for your help with that section.”

「よくこの島の穴だらけの滑走路にあの古い機体を降ろせましたね。相変わらず腕は確かなようだ」

“You were able to unload that old aircraft on the airstrip full of holes on this island. You seem to be as reliable as ever.”

「模擬空戦の成績がいくら良くても実戦を経験せずいきなり特攻ですから……」

“No matter how good your results are in the mock air battle, you’re suddenly on a special attack without experiencing actual combat…”

「……しかし、機体の故障で少しだけ猶予ができた」

“…However, we were given a little bit of a reprieve due to a malfunction in the aircraft.”

橘が近づいてささやいた。

Tachibana approached and whispered.

「実はいくら確認してもあなたの言う故障箇所が見つからないんです」敷島は言葉が震えるのを押し殺しながら答えた。

“Actually, no matter how hard I check, I still can’t find the malfunction you’re talking about,” Shikishima replied, suppressing the trembling in his words.

「……何が言いたいんですか?」

“…What do you want to say?”

そして、気分を害した振りをして、海岸に向かって歩き始めた。

Then, pretending to be offended, he started walking toward the shore.

この島も、それほど甘い場所ではないようだった。

This island didn’t seem to be such a sweet place either.

青ざめて海岸の岩に座っていた敷島に、一人の整備兵が近づいてきた。さいとう胸の名札に「斉藤」とある。

A mechanic approached Shikishima, who was sitting pale on a rock on the shore. The name tag on Saito’s chest says “Saito.”

「なんですか?」

“What is it?”

「いや、橘さんが呼んでこいと」

“No, Tachibana-san should call me.”

「なんの用でしょう?」

“What is it for?”

斉藤は敷島の横に座って海を見ながらつぶやいた。

Saito sat next to Shikishima and looked out at the sea, muttering to himself.

「いいんじゃないですか?あんたみたいなのがいたって。死んでこいなんて命令、忠実に守ってもこの戦争はとうに先が見えてる」

“Isn’t it okay? There’s someone like you out there. Even if you faithfully follow orders to die, this war has a long way to go.”

それだけ言うと、斉藤は立ち上がって元来た道を帰っていった。

With that said, Saito got up and headed back the way he had come.

この島に来てから初めて優しい言葉をかけられて、敷島は思わず涙を落としそうになった。

For the first time since coming to this island, Shikishima was greeted with such kind words that he almost burst into tears.

それをなんとかこらえた頃、不思議な物が海岸に流れ着いているのを敷島は見た。

Just as Shikishima managed to hold back, he saw a strange object washing up on the shore.

深海魚らしき不思議な形をした魚が、口から胃袋を吐き出したようになって死んでいた。

A strangely shaped fish that looked like a deep-sea fish was dead, with its stomach vomiting out of its mouth.

それも一匹ではない。数匹の深海魚の死体が波に洗われている。

And it’s not just one. The carcasses of several deep-sea fish are being washed by the waves.

中には目玉が飛び出しているものもいた。

Some of them even had eyeballs sticking out.

それはそこはかとない不吉さを漂わせていた。

It had a slightly ominous feel to it.

タ暮れ時になって敷島が帰ると、橘が待っていた。

When Shikishima returned home at dusk, Tachibana was waiting for him.

橘は顎で指揮所に入るように促した。

Tachibana motioned with his chin to enter the command post.

もしかすると、私的裁判が始まるのかも知れない。

Perhaps a private trial will begin.

特攻忌避は重罪だ。呼吸が乱れるのを感じながら、敷島は指揮所の建物の中に入っていった。

Evading special attacks is a serious crime. Shikishima walked into the command post building, feeling his breathing become irregular.

中には敷島が想像したのとまるで違う光景が広がっていた。

Inside was a scene completely different from what Shikishima had imagined.

大きな鍋に魚の鍋物が大量に出来上がっていた。

A large pot of fish was being prepared in large quantities.

その周りではニコニコ顔の整備兵達が、まあ座れと手招きしている。

Around him, the smiling maintenance soldiers were beckoning me to sit down.

訳もわからないまま敷島が座ると、整備兵達が口々にしゃべり出した。

Shikishima sat down, not understanding why, and the maintenance soldiers started talking.

「お前さんみたいなやつが来ないか待っていたんだよ」

“I was waiting for someone like you to come.”

「特攻忌避とは、なかなかやるじゃないか」

“Isn’t it quite difficult to evade special attacks?”

「もうすぐこの戦争は終わりだ。今死ぬなんて馬鹿らしい」

“This war is almost over. It would be foolish to die now.”

「俺達とここで首をすくめてりゃ、そのうち内地に帰れるさ」我慢できなかった。

“If you hang out here with us, you’ll be able to go back to the mainland soon.” He couldn’t resist.

この整備兵達は、逃げた自分を受け入れてくれている。それがたまらなく嬉しかった。

These maintenance soldiers accept him even though he ran away. That made him so happy.

敷島は顔を床に向けて嗚咽した。

Shikishima turned his face to the floor and sobbed.

「さあ、泣いてないで食え。大戸島名物、深海魚鍋だ」

“Now, don’t cry and eat. It’s a deep-sea fish hotpot, a specialty of Odo Island.”

「さっき海岸で拾ってきたばっかりだ。見た目は悪いが、新鮮だぞ」

“I just picked it up on the beach. It doesn’t look good, but it’s fresh.”

「内地じゃろくに食っていないんだろ?」

“You don’t eat much inland, do you?”

その鍋はしみるほどうまかった。

The hotpot was so delicious.

敷島は出撃以来、何も食べていなかったことを思いだし、ガツガツと鍋をかき込んだ。

Shikishima remembered that he hadn’t eaten anything since his departure, and he stirred the pot.

しかし、今日はずいぶんと深海魚が揚がったな」

However, we caught quite a few deep-sea fish today.

「呉爾羅が出るんじゃないか?」

“Isn’t GOJIRA going to appear?”

「なんだいそれは?」

“What is that?”

「島の奴らが言ってたんだ。深海魚が沢山揚がった日には呉爾羅が出るって」

“The people on the island said that on days when a lot of deep-sea fish are caught, GOJIRA will appear.”

「俺も聞いたぞ。呉爾羅が動くと、慌てた深海魚がなりふり構わず海面にあがって胃袋が出ちまうんだろ?」

“I heard that too. When GOJIRA moves, the panicked deep-sea fish will come up to the surface without worrying about what he’s doing, and their stomachs will come out, right?”

その時、空襲警報が鳴り響いた。呉爾羅の話に少しおびえていた整備兵達は一斉にビクッと体を反応させた。

At that moment, an air raid siren sounded. The maintenance soldiers, who were a little frightened by GOJIRA’s story, all reacted with a twitch.

しかしその直後、瞬時に兵士の顔を取り戻した整備兵達は、歩兵銃を手に外に飛び出した。

However, immediately after that, the maintenance soldiers instantly regained their soldierly faces and rushed outside with infantry guns in hand.

「敵襲か?」

“Enemy attack?”

橘の問いに見張り櫓の上から見張りの兵士、滝が答えた。

Taki, a soldier standing guard from the top of the watchtower, answered Tachibana’s question.

「いや、何かでかい影が」

“No, there’s a big shadow.”

その時、腹を震わせる獣の雄叫びが、海岸の方から聞こえた。

At that moment, the roar of a beast that shook its belly was heard from the shore.

「米軍の新兵器か?」

“Is this a new weapon for the U.S. military?”

そうつぶやくと、橘が見張り櫓に向かって言った。

After muttering that, Tachibana said to the lookout tower.

「滝! 探照灯照らせ。海岸の方だ!」

“Waterfall! Shine your searchlight. It’s towards the coast!”

言われるままに海岸線に向けられた探照灯の強い明かりの中に、ひどく奇妙な物が浮かび上がった。

As he was told, something extremely strange appeared in the strong light of the searchlight that was directed towards the coastline.

太い手足には見事なでの爪。そしてその顎には鋭い歯が隙間なく並んでいた。尾から背中にかけて、それぞれが独立した貝殻のような背びれが所狭しと並んでいた。それは太古の恐竜にも似たおぞましい怪物だった。体高十五メートルはあるだろうか?

Beautiful claws on thick limbs. And its jaws were lined with sharp teeth. From its tail to its back, it had a row of independent, shell-like dorsal fins. It was a horrifying monster that resembled an ancient dinosaur. Is he 15 meters tall?

「生き物なのか?」

“Is it a living thing?”

敷島はそのあまりにも現実離れした姿に呆然と立っていた。

Shikishima stood dumbfounded at the sight, which was so unrealistic.

これが呉爾羅と呼ばれていた怪物なのか?

Is this the monster called GOJIRA?

怪物は探照灯に抗議するように一声吠えると、巨大な体を見張り櫓に叩きつけるように突進した。

The monster roared aloud as if to protest the searchlights, and then charged forward, slamming its huge body into the guard tower.

一撃で見張り兵と共に櫓は倒壊した。

With one blow, the tower collapsed along with the guard.

「滝!」

“Taki!”

「滝さん」

“Mr. Taki”

口々に叫ぶ整備兵達に滝は答えてくれなかった。

Taki did not respond to the maintenance soldiers who were shouting at each other.

続いてその呉爾羅と思われる怪物は、備蓄されていたガソリンのドラム缶を数個一

Next, the monster, believed to be GOJIRA, grabbed several drums of gasoline that had been stockpiled.

気に踏み潰した。それは破壊された探照灯の火花に触れて、大きな爆煙を上げた。

He crushed it. He touched the spark of the destroyed searchlight and produced a huge plume of smoke.

そのオレンジ色の光に呉爾羅は照らし出された。

GOJIRA was illuminated by that orange light.

その表皮はゴツゴツとうろこに覆われ、その目は金色に輝いている。

Its epidermis is covered with rough scales, and its eyes shine golden.

「呉爾羅」は爆煙を踏みつけながら、一同に向かって一歩一歩歩き始めた。

“GOJIRA” stepped on the explosive smoke and started walking towards the group step by step.

「塹壕まで下がるぞ」

“Go down to the trenches.”

橘の一言で、整備兵達は一斉に海沿いに掘られた塹壕に飛び込んでいった。

At Tachibana’s words, the maintenance soldiers all jumped into a trench dug along the coast.

地面すれすれから見ると、呉爾羅は人間を探してうろついているようだった。だが、ガソリンの炎に目をやられて、こちらの様子はまだ見えていないようだ。

From the ground, GOJIRA seemed to be wandering around looking for humans. However, his eyes were blinded by the gasoline flames, and he didn’t seem to be able to see us yet.

橘が指揮所前に置かれた敷島機と呉爾羅を交互に見ながら言った。

Tachibana said as he alternately looked at the Shikishima machine stationed in front of the command post while looking at GOJIRA.

「敷島さん、零戦まで行って20ミリを撃てますか?」

“Mr. Shikishima, can you go up to the Zero and shoot a 20mm?”

[…..!]

“…!”

「あれを撃てるのはあんただけだ。ここには整備兵しかいない」

“You’re the only one who can shoot that thing. The only one here is a mechanic.”

「……しかし」

“……but”

「奴が射線に入る前に、急いで!」

“Hurry, before he gets in the line of fire!”

「手負いにしたら、まずいことになりませんか」

“Wouldn’t it be bad if I were to get injured?”

「20ミリ食らって、生きていられる生物なんていません!さぁ早く!」

“There is no living thing that can survive after being eaten by 20 millimeters! Come on, hurry up!”

敷島は押し出されるように塹壕から出された。仕方なくそっと零戦のコックピットに向かって敷島は走った。

Shikishima was pushed out of the trench. Reluctantly, Shikishima quietly ran toward the Zero Fighter’s cockpit.

あの怪物に20ミリ砲を撃ち込むなんて、正気の沙汰とは思えなかった。

He thought it was insane to fire a 20mm gun at that monster.

それよりは怪物が破壊に飽きて、海に戻るのを静観していた方が、生き残る確率はずっと高くなるはずだ。

Instead, the chances of survival would be much higher if the monster got tired of the destruction and waited for it to return to the sea.

しかし、20ミリを撃ち込んだら確かに、あの呉爾羅という怪物を倒すことができるかも知れない。

However, if you shoot a 20mm, you might be able to defeat that monster named GOJIRA.

それはもしかしたら、敷島が特攻から逃げた「意味」になってくれるかもしれなかった。

Perhaps that could be the “meaning” that Shikishima escaped from the special attack.

敷島は、できるだけ音を立てないようにコックピットに収まると、射撃レバーを握った。

Shikishima settled into the cockpit, making as little noise as possible, and gripped the firing lever.

その時、そのかすかな音を聞きつけて、呉爾羅がヌッと零戦のすぐ前に顔を突き出した。

At that moment, GOJIRA heard that faint sound and stuck his head right in front of the Zero Fighter.

探っているような目つきで機内を見るとしばらく考え込むようにそこに留まった。

He looked into the plane with searching eyes and stayed there for a while, as if thinking.

その恐ろしい目、巨大な質量、思いがけず俊敏な動き……。

Its terrifying eyes, huge mass, and unexpectedly agile movements…

敷島は射すくめられたように体をこわばらせていた。

Shikishima’s body stiffened as if he had been shot.

こんな化け物に機銃を撃ち込んで無事でいられるわけがない。

There’s no way you can shoot a machine gun at a monster like this and be safe.

敷島の本能がそう叫んでいた。

That’s what Shikishima’s instincts were screaming at him.

そもそもこの生き物は、人間がどうこうしていいものじゃない。

In the first place, these creatures are not something humans can do anything about.

敷島はただただ息を殺して、呉爾羅が去るのを待った。

Shikishima just held his breath and waited for GOJIRA to leave.

塹壕の中で、橘はいらついていた。

In the trenches, Tachibana was getting irritated.

「何してるんだ! あいつ」

“What are you doing! That guy?”

呉爾羅は零戦の機銃で撃ち殺すには絶好のポジションに留まっていた。しかし敷島は撃とうとはしなかった。

GOJIRA remained in the perfect position to kill him with the Zero’s machine gun. However, Shikishima did not try to shoot.

「今だ!撃て! 撃ってくれ」

“Now! Shoot! Shoot!”

橘の押し殺した声は敷島には届かない。

Tachibana’s muffled voice did not reach Shikishima.

やがて呉爾羅はゆっくりときびすを返し、塹壕の方に向かってきた。

Eventually, GOJIRA slowly turned around and headed towards the trench.

塹壕に潜む、若年兵の恐怖に満ちた吐息が大きくなっていく。

The young soldiers hiding in the trenches were breathing louder and louder in fear.

橘自体もあの巨大な未知の存在に、じわじわと追い詰められつつあった。

Tachibana himself was slowly being cornered by that gigantic unknown being.

山側の森に逃げ込むなら今だった。

Now was the time to escape into the forest on the mountain side.

しかしそれはあの獣に追われ、狩られることになる。

But he ends up being chased and hunted by that beast.

この中の幾人かは無事ではいられないだろう。

Some of these people will not survive.

このままでいれば、やがて呉爾羅は海に帰ってくれるかもしれない。

If this continues, GOJIRA may eventually return to the sea.

そんな思いは、突然の銃声にかき消された。

Those thoughts were drowned out by a sudden gunshot.

恐怖に耐えきれなくなった若年兵が、思わず99式短小銃を撃ってしまったのだ。

Unable to bear the fear, the young soldier instinctively fired his Type 99 short rifle.

それをきっかけに次々と短小銃が発射された。

As a result, short rifles were fired one after another.

「撃つなバカー」

“Don’t shoot, idiot.”

橘の制止も聞かず、次々と短小銃が撃たれた。

Without even hearing Tachibana’s attempts to stop them, short rifles were fired one after another.

恐怖が銃の引き金を軽くしていたのだ。

Fear had made the trigger of the gun lighter.

次々と撃ち込まれるライフル弾に、呉爾羅は地響きが起こるほどの声で吠えた。そして驚くほどのスピードで塹壕に向かってきた。

As the rifle bullets were fired one after another, GOJIRA roared so loudly that the ground shook. And with amazing speed he came toward the trench.

出ろ! ここから出ろ!」

Get out! Get out of here!”

橘の怒号に我に返った兵士達が飛び出すと同時に、呉爾羅の足が塹壕を踏み抜いた。

At the same time as the soldiers came to their senses and jumped out at Tachibana’s yell, GOJIRA’s feet stepped through the trench.

そこで折れて跳ねた木材が橘の足を襲った。

A piece of wood broke and jumped, hitting Tachibana’s leg.

片足を引きずりながらそこを離れようと必死にもがく橘を、若年兵の一人が後ろから支えて引っ張った。

One of the young soldiers supported Tachibana from behind and pulled him as he struggled desperately to leave, dragging one leg.

「橘さん、だいじょう･･･」

“Tachibana-san, hey…”

その声がくぐもった悲鳴に変わると、その若年兵は空中に舞い上がるように引き上げられた。

As his voice turned into a muffled scream, the young soldier was lifted into the air.

呉爾羅の顎に捕らえられ、放り投げられたのだ。

It was caught in GOJIRA’s jaws and thrown away.

必死に短小銃を撃つ兵士達を呉爾羅は踏み潰し、噛みつき投げ飛ばし、尻尾で叩きしつぼ潰し、みるみるうちに生きている兵士はわずかになってしまった。

GOJIRA crushed the soldiers who were frantically firing short rifles, biting them, throwing them away, and smashing them with his tail until there were only a few soldiers left alive.

指揮所に逃げ込んだ数名も、呉爾羅の尾によって、指揮所ごと破壊された。敷島は、コックピットに座り込んで、ただただ目の前で繰り広げられる惨劇を呆然さんげきと見ているだけだった。

Several people escaped to the command post, but the entire command post was destroyed by GOJIRA’s tail. Shikishima sat in the cockpit and simply watched in shock as the tragedy unfolded before his eyes.

――― 自分が撃たなかったせいか? そうなのか?

――― Was it because he didn’t shoot? Is that so?
