The heat rays that were about to be released inside Godzilla’s body began to burn various parts.

そして熱線は弱くなった部分を突き破り、ゴジラ自身の体を崩壊させながら空に昇っていった。

The heat rays then pierced through the weakened parts, causing Godzilla’s body to disintegrate as it ascended into the sky.

体のあちこちから光の柱が生まれ、その体はグズグズと崩れながら海に沈み始めた。

その様子を上空のパラシュートから敷島は眺めていた。

Shikishima watched the situation from his parachute in the sky.

終わったのだ。

敷島を苦しみ続けていたゴジラは今海に還っていく。

成し遂げた気持ちが心を満たすはずだった。しかし今敷島の思いは、ただただ終わったということに終始していた。

艦上の人々も、ゴジラの最期をまるで一枚の宗教画を見るような面持ちで眺めていた。

The people on the ship watched Godzilla’s final moments as if they were watching a religious painting.

もしかすると人間がやってはいけないことを、彼らは成し遂げてしまったのかも知れなかった。

They may have accomplished something that humans should not have done.

人々は誰からということもなく、次第にゴジラに向かって敬礼を始めた。

Gradually, people began saluting Godzilla, no matter who they were.

それは三年前まで戦争に身を投じていた男達の、最大の鎮魂の表出だった。

It was the greatest expression of requiem for the men who had dedicated themselves to the war until three years ago.

思えば、この獣は人間の愚かさによって焼かれ、その姿形を醜く変容させられた被害者ともいえる。

If you think about it, you could say that this beast is a victim whose appearance has been transformed into an ugly one, burned by human stupidity.

そんな気持ちが彼らに思わず敬礼をさせてしまったのかも知れない。

Perhaps it was this feeling that made them salute involuntarily.

その中で黒煙を残して、ゴジラの体は完全に海に没した。

戻ってきた雪風と響を、港を埋め尽くさんばかりの人々が出迎えた。

ゴジラを倒したというニュースを聞きつけて、集まってきた人々だった。

The people gathered there after hearing the news that Godzilla had been defeated.

敷島達が横付けされたタラップを降りると、一足先に到着していた水島が飛び出してきた。

When Shikishima and his friends got off the gangway next to them, Mizushima, who had arrived a step ahead of them, jumped out.

「やったな!やったな」

“You did it! You did it!”

そう言いながら目を涙でいっぱいにした水島が、敷島に飛びついた。

As Mizushima said this, his eyes filled with tears, he jumped towards Shikishima.

野田や秋津が、ガキ大将を褒めるように水島の頭をぐしゃぐしゃにかき回した。

Noda and Akitsu shook Mizushima’s head as if praising General Gaki.

その時、敷島は、明子を抱え、血相を変えてやってきた澄子を群衆の中に見つけた。

At that time, Shikishima found Sumiko in the crowd, carrying the child Akiko and her appearance changed.

“Sumiko-san?”

澄子はあふれんばかりの感情を押し殺しながら、敷島に電報を渡した。急いでその中身を確かめた敷島は、信じられないという目で澄子を見た。

Sumiko suppressed her overflowing emotions as she handed the telegram to Shikishima. Shikishima quickly checked what was inside it, and he looked at Sumiko in disbelief.

明子は何が起こっているのかわからないといった様子で、敷島と澄子を代わる代わる見ていた。

Akiko looked at Shikishima and Sumiko in turn, as if she didn’t know what was going on.

澄子は、敷島の問いに答える代わりに、その肩を何度も何度もたたいた。

Instead of answering Shikishima’s question, Sumiko patted him on the shoulder over and over again.

雲の上を駆けるようにおぼつかない足取りで、電報の中身が変わってしまわないこと。それだけを願いながら、踊るような足取りで階段を上った。

His unsteady steps made him feel like he was running on clouds, and the contents of the telegram did not change. That’s all he wanted as he climbed the stairs with dancing steps.

ドアを開けると、ベッドの上には希望がちょこんと座っていた。

When he opened her door, he saw Hope sitting on her bed.

それは懐かしそうな目で敷島を見ると、問うた。

She asked as she looked at Shikishima with nostalgic eyes.

「浩さんの戦争は終わりましたか?」

“Is Hiroshi-san’s war over?”

明子を抱いて階段を駆け上がっている時も、敷島にはまるで実感がなかった。

Even when he was running up the stairs with Akiko in her arms, Shikishima didn’t feel it at all.

包帯でぐるぐる巻きの状態が痛ましく、しかししっかりと息づいている典子に、よろけるように近づいて抱きしめた敷島は、ただただ子供のように「うん、うん」と領くだけだった。

Noriko was painfully wrapped in bandages, but she was still breathing, and Shikishima stumbled closer to her and hugged her, and all she did was say, “Yeah, yeah,” like a child.

その時、典子の首筋に、黒い小さな痣のようなものが通い上がってきた。

深海に沈んでいったバラバラになったゴジラの体･･････その中のひときわ大きな一欠片がドクンと鼓動した。

Godzilla’s dismembered body sank into the depths of the ocean… and one particularly large piece within it began to throb.

だがそこは深海だったため、誰も見ることはできなかった。

But because it was deep in the ocean, no one could see it.

ただ、揺らめく波紋にゆがめられた太陽の光がかすかに届く中、それは確実に再生を始めていた。

However, as the sunlight distorted by the wavering ripples faintly reached it, it was definitely beginning to regenerate.
