On this day, August 31, 1978, Godzilla vs Cosmic Monster was released in Philadelphia theaters.

Bigger and Angrier

Guess who’s back.

Godzilla, that’s who. The newest Japanese import to our shores is “Godzilla 1985,” a sequel to those unforgettable movie classics of the 1950s and ’60s.
This time, the 2-million-year-old monster is bigger (260 feet, as compared to 160 in earlier times) and angrier than ever – so angry, in fact, that he eats nuclear submarines.
A spokesman for the distributor described the film – which wowed ’em in Japan – as “nostalgia at its most perverse.”

That’s a recommendation?

The series featuring Godzilla (battling King Kong in 1974) “went downhill in the last five or six pictures”

To the rescue

Godzilla, once a villain, to be reborn a hero

By Andrew Horvat

Associated Press

TOKYO – Godzilla, the Japanese movie monster that first stomped across the screen 25 years ago as a film argument against the atomic bomb, will make a comeback next year as the hero of an accident at a nuclear power plant.

The monster, born in the South Seas as a result of U.S. testing of atomic bombs, will reappear after a six-year absence, apparently as a confirmed good guy.

“It will be a serious film, just like the first movie, which was a reaction to uncontrolled atomic bomb testing in the atmosphere,” Tomoyuki Tanaka, president of the Toho Motion Picture Co., said here yesterday.

“We are in the middle of script-writing,” he said. “The Japanese are now fearful of the future, much as at the time of the 1954 film.” Tanaka is the creator of the series of 15 movies starring the giant flying monster that tore up commuter trains and kicked its way through oil refineries.

The monster’s 25th birthday was celebrated in July in New York and this month in Tokyo with a showing of all 15 films. Tanaka said the new film is a response to renewed popular interest in Godzilla. About 60,000 people saw the film revival in Tokyo.

Godzilla toys brought in $4.5 million for makers in the past four years and books and other memorabilia are also said to be selling well after a lapse.

Ishiro Honda, director of 10 of the 15 Godzilla movies, said, “We went downhill in the last five or six pictures.”

Tanaka said European critics saw Godzilla as a Japanese reaction to the atom bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States during World War II.

“I think that appraisal is correct,” Honda said. “Godzilla shows the Japanese attitude toward the atom.”

The monster turned friendly in later films, and, in one picture, warded off monsters from outer space.

In the first film, a monster emerges from world war, food shortage and the possibility the depths of the South Pacific after U.S. bomb testing in the Bikini atoll.

In the American version, Raymond Burr, later to become familiar as Perry Mason and Ironside, played the part of an American reporter investigating the appearance of a monster in Japan. Burr’s investigating activities were shot in Hollywood and spliced into the Japanese film.

The first film featured major Japanese actors but the later, cheaper films used mostly lesser-known, younger talent.

“Godzilla is a hard act to follow,” said director Honda.

There was even a Godzilla film that dealt with the dangers of industrial pollution, which are very serious in Japan. Another monster called Hedora, from the Japanese word “hedoro” meaning industrial sludge, rose from polluted Japanese seas and engulfed everything in its path.

Godzilla in Japan is known as “Gojira,” apparently a combination of gorilla (“gorira” in Japanese and “kujira,” the Japanese word for whale.

“The oil shortage, the prospects of a third world war, food shortage and the possibility of another giant earthquake are now beginning to preoccupy the Japanese, much like the atom bomb did 25 years ago,” Tanaka said. Asked if the next Godzilla film will deal with these fears, he said, “I don’t think we’ll be all that logical.”

“When I heard that they were making a sequel, I wondered what I should do for the opening this time. The first movie had a single shot in the opening, which was well-received, so I wondered if I could do something completely different this time. Also, if people came to see the sequel with the same excitement they had after seeing the first movie, it would inevitably raise the bar, so I wanted to reset the expectations with the opening. As various thoughts crossed my mind, I decided, “That’s it, Godzilla!” — Takashi Yamazaki (Always 2)

My 90s Basement Bundle

The end of the month is upon us. As I prepare for next month I’m thinking about new content to share. Since my Godzilla Room has been reimagined, I can begin organizing and cataloging my collectibles in my basement. I have more collectibles down in the basement than in my room. When I’m down there I’m always looking for something to share. Yesterday, my eyes feel upon some items from the 90s. First, I spotted an old shopping bag from one of my favorite Philly toy stores from the 90s, Quakerhead Collectibles, owned by my friend Ted. I designed his logo featured on the bag. It’s plastic nostalgia and a portfolio sample. Second, my eyes landed on this bootleg VHS tape of Godzilla vs King Ghidorah with its desaturated cover and manually-typed label. There’s no doubt this is how I saw this great Heisei classic in the early 90s. And lastly, I found what I had been looking for over the last month. This is merchandise from the LitGodzi Kaizyu Series, centered around Little Godzilla and kaiju friends. I don’t remember where I bought this; it may have been from Quakerhead. But now it will be on display in my Godzilla Room in the 90s section.

On Odo Island, Dr Yamane discovered a trilobite embedded in the red clay left behind in Godzilla’s footprint along with radioactive strontium-90. The trilobite (三葉虫), a type of crustacean, was characteristic of the Biphlocatas layer of the Jurassic period and lived during the same era as Godzilla. Dr Yamane determined the Godzilla was a creature in the process of evolving from an aquatic reptile to a terrestrial beast. “Two million years ago, a giant beast, Godzilla hid in the depths of the ocean unexplored by humans, or even in an undersea cave, and survived until today.” 1954 Trilobite Model

‘Godzilla’ returns to basics in 1985 edition

The less you see of Godzilla, the more you want to see.

That’s the rule the Tokyo-based Toho film studio established with its first scaly-monster thrillers in the 1950s, but then violated with poor sequels.

As had been the case with Universal Pictures’ Frankenstein Monster and wrestler-actor Tor Johnson’s mountainous film brute, overfamiliarity made a clown of Godzilla.

It’s back to basics with Godzilla 1985, whose makers show the sense to keep their skyscraper dinosaur off the screen until reasonably late in the game. For fans who can’t do without a good early scare, the film presents some slimy dinosaur parasites to make a meal off crew members on a ship that Godzilla has wrecked.

Godzilla 1985 may be a very good film in the Japanese cut. The American edition reflects brilliant trick cinematography and miniature cityscapes and really scary close-ups of the beast, and it retains a classy musical score performed by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. But the translation to English often becomes unbearably foolish, indulging in superfluous dialogue to describe events better told by the cameras.

In the U.S. footage, Raymond Burr reprises his part from the ’50s original as a news reporter who had covered the creature’s first rampage and is called upon to help fight the revived menace. The role presents little challenge to so capable an actor, but Burr makes it more than a caricature.

Toho conceived Godzilla (whose name means “go-rilla-whale”) as a fantastic embodiment of nuclear horrors. Even in its drastically re-cut English-language edition, the original Godzilla, King of the Monsters remains a frightening cautionary tale about consequences of tampering with the atom.

Godzilla 1985 resurrects the monster as an angry juggernaut, hungry to feed off waste from a power-plant reactor. The only conclusive means of stopping its onslaught is a warhead that raises spectres of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

But the story wisely avoids the deployment of nuclear weaponry and allows the Japanese to lure the monster into a volcano. We may suspect that Godzilla is too tough to let an inconvenience like this stop it for long.

Godzilla 2000 Millennium (The Philadelphia Inquirer, Friday, August 18, 2000, p 102)

Godzilla (right) does battle against another behemoth in “Godzilla 2000.” With cheesy effects and jokey English dubbing, the Japanese-made feature is an improvement over Hollywood’s 1998 effort.

By Steven Rea

Inquirer Movie Critic

It lumbers out of the sea, its spiky tail slicing skyscrapers in half, big clawed feet squashing automobiles like tin cans, its eyes looking fierce and soulful and — well, really, really fake.

In Godzilla 2000, the humongo reptile of Japanese cinema is back, terrorizing innocent citizens and giving the military a reason to call up its high-tech tanks and jet fighters. (They’re useless, of course, but you’ve got to give it a shot, right?) An enjoyable throwback to the way monster movies used to be made (cheesy effects, and dialogue to go with’em), Godzilla 2000 is the 23d such film from Tokyo’s Toho Studios, and it goes a long way toward rehabilitating the radioactive behemoth so sadly sullied by Hollywood in Roland Emmerich’s bloated 1998 snoozer, Godzilla.

In this installment, the firebreathing gargantuan comes face to face with what appears to be, at first, a flying chrome-plated bedpan designed by Alessi. This curious object, sprung from the ocean’s depths after a 60-million-year snooze, mystifies freaked-out populace – and then shape-shifts into an enormous ripoff of the monster from Alien. Godzilla and Orga, as the production notes call this creature (darned if I heard anybody call it that in the movie, go at it, toppling power lines and making a mess of the city’s noodle houses.

Godzilla 2000, which features a husband, wife and their kid racing around town in a van, Twister-style, tracking the monster, is dubbed into English in a manner that’s occasionally too jokey for its own good. (Maybe the writers were auditioning for Mystery Science Theater 2000? But there are some classic lines, none more so than the film’s last – a piece of priceless philosophizing that’s too profound to give away here.

By the Script

Today, King Kong vs Godzilla (キングコング対ゴジラ) opened in Japan on August 11, 1962. After its release in the U.S. in the following years, the question became, “Who won?” Let’s turn to the ending according to the script as it appears in Keiko Susuki’s script (reprint) with its redactions, notes and edits and as it appears in King Kong vs Godzilla Completion (Hobby Japan, 2021). The portions of the script that were removed are marked with strikethroughs.

193 Sea: The mortal combat between Godzilla and King Kong continues… Before long, both of them―as if utterly spent―slid sluggishly into the sea and vanished from sight.

194 The Cliffside Road: Shigezawa and the others are startled.

195 Seabed (topography resembling the crater of a submarine volcano): Godzilla and King Kong descend, grappling sluggishly as if in slow motion. Suddenly, an underwater earthquake rumbled with a roar. The seafloor heaving violently!

196 The Cliffside Road: Shigezawa and the others brace themselves against standing trees and the like amidst violent swaying.

Tako: “………………It’s an earthquake!”

197 Ocean floor: The rock is crumbling. It tumbled down onto Godzilla. Still, it tumbles down…

198 The Cliffside Road: The earthquake stops… The group watches over the sea, relieved. Suddenly, air bubbles come rising up with a gurgling sound.

Everyone: “………………”

As King Kong suddenly emerges into view, he lets out a feeble roar and begins swimming toward the south.

199 Inside the helicopter: Sakurai, speaking into the microphone,

Sakurai: “King Kong is breaking out into the waters to the south… What shall we do?”

200 The Cliffside Road: Shigezawa answers using the car’s microphone.

Shigezawa: “No… I’m going to let him go back… He must be missing that southern island… Let’s just leave him be… King Kong’s mission is over.“

Furue: “Director……”

Tako: “It can’t be helped; let’s give up… By the way, what happened to Godzilla?”

Shigezawa: “Well, then…”

201 Ocean floor: Collapsed rocks! Rocks! Godzilla’s tail is peeking out from between the rocks.

202 Inside the helicopter: Sakurai and Fujita are leaning forward, watching. A calm sea surface. Sakurai looks in one direction. King Kong moves away across the sea, growing smaller and smaller. Sakurai and Fujita exchange glances—with safety.

Fujita: “Godzilla… I wonder if he’s dead.”

Sakurai: “Well…”

Fujita: “Do you think it’s still alive?”

203 The Cliffside Road:

Shigezawa: “Well, then…” Furue: “It’s not very reassuring… Which is it?”

Shigezawa: “Who knows… All I can say, as I am now, is that the time has come for humanity to learn once again from the flora and fauna of the natural world… That is the only thing I can say.” “Who knows… All I can say right now is that human beings are, after all, just another form of flora and fauna…”

Furue: “!?…” (shaking her head) He walked sixty paces to the left and approached Tako, who was idly toying with a copper coin―looking rather disappointed―

Furue: “Chief, did you figure it out?”

Tako: “…”

Furue: “What exactly is the situation with Godzilla?”

Tako: “…”

Furue: “Is he alive?”

Tako: “…”

Furue: “Do you think he’s dead…?”

Tako tosses the copper coin into the air. As they watch the coin, the expressions on Tako and Furue’s faces change to one of surprise.

204 On soft soil: Not heads… nor tails… In other words, a copper coin standing perfectly upright.

Furue: “Manager! Th-this is…”

By the time Tako and Furue realized what was happening, the car carrying Shigezawa and the others had already started moving. Have Godzilla will travel

My Toba tix and pics

Here is my ticket to Toba and to find Godzilla on Odo Island on Friday, March 24, 2023. Today, August 7 in 1954, principal photography and filming of Godzilla commenced. The Toho staff, crew and cast headed to Toba in the Mia Prefecture. Director Ishiro Honda was on home ground there in the village of Ijika, where he filmed The Blue Pearl and was perfect for Odo Island and underwater shooting. The village was connected by land to Toba, but it was so remote it was more convenient to travel by a forty-minute ferry ride from the port. In 2023, I was determined to find these filming locations. So I left Tokyo headed to Nagoya. Toba was about a two-hour train ride from the Kintestsu-Nagoya station. Upon arrival my first stop was the Kata Shrine a short five-minute walk from the station. There the famous kagura was performed to ward away Godzilla. My final destination was the hill where Godzilla made his first appearance. Rather than a boat trip, I could take a 30-minute bus ride around the port and into the mountains. It was my most challenging expedition in Japan. I’ll never forget my time in Toba and meeting Godzilla. I would love to do it again! Odo Island | Godzilla Hill | 1 | 2 | 3

On this day

Today, August 6, 1945, is the infamous day of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Both the U.S. Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956) and Cozzilla (1977), the heavily-edited ominous Italian version by filmmaker Luigi Cozzi, explicit connect the destruction of Tokyo by Godzilla with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. In Cozzilla, the date appears across the scene with additional war footage before giving way to August 6, 1954 and the wounded U.S. reporter Steve Martin lying underneath the Tokyo rumble. However, The original Gojira (1954) begins on August 13 and Godzilla’s attack on the Japanese vessel the Eiko Maru. The significance of the correlation became apparent when I came across this headline, “Tokyo Next on Atomic Bomb List,” in the San Antonio Light on August 7, 1945. Today, we remember the lives lost and spared. Watch Film

The Miracle: “Burning Millennium Godzilla” Lives in the Real World

“When the suit is actually glowing right there on set, it naturally alters the surrounding smoke and casts realistic reflections onto the opposing monster. All of these elements elevate the sense of reality, proving to the audience that this creature is ‘right there in front of our eyes.’ There is an undeniable power in being able to believe that the real thing actually exists!”

The 1954 Bookshelf

The vast majority of Godzilla books are in Japanese, of course. So they will be most often in The Daily Spotlight. Grab your camera phone, open Google Translate and enjoy. This is first in a series of Bookshelf posts highlighting some of the best books available for photos and study of each Godzilla movie. Some movies have more documentation than others that are meagerly documented in comparison. Today, we begin with Godzilla (1954). Here is a set of books to fill the top shelf of your Godzilla library. Most of these books cover Shodai Godzilla exclusively. Books that span Godzilla’s 70-year movie history are excluded. This list is selective and not exhaustive. The book images and sizes are not to scale. If you love the first Godzilla like I do, start here for the best books.

Godzilla didn’t go anywhere

In 1979, Godzilla turned 25 years old and we were living in one of the greatest Godzilla booms. The Bendy Godzilla, Mattel Shogun Godzilla, Godzilla’s Gang, Game and View-Master were cornerstones in my earliest collection. Fangoria premiered with Godzilla on the outside and inside. The Marvel Godzilla comic book series was born. And Godzilla was a regular on Saturday morning and afternoon. It was the best of times. Although the Toho Champion Festival had ended, the Big G had retired four years earlier and would not make a new movie for another five, Godzilla was still on the big screen here and in Japan. Little did I know, his birthday celebration kicked off August 2, 1979, at the Nichigeki Theater in Yurakucho, Tokyo, hosting the “Godzilla’s 25th Anniversary: Complete Godzilla Film Collection” (ゴジラ誕生25周年 ゴジラ映画大全集). There fifteen Showa-era Godzilla films including Godzilla King of the Monsters (1956), Mothra, Rodan and other Toho tokusatsu films were screened over three weeks until the 24th. Fans could enjoy Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla, King Kong vs Godzilla, and Invasion of Astro-Monster every day. What a time it was to be a Godzilla fan. Flyer | Screenings | Learn More

Let’s Get Physical

Everyday I work on my Godzilla Room. I’m working on my media center featuring Godzilla CDs, Laserdiscs, VHS tapes, DVDs and Blu-rays. In the process of sorting and gathering, I found remaining of my Godzilla video games. And the one I wanted to find was Atari’s Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. Players could Godzilla into battle against his foes like MechaGodzilla and King Ghidorah in a great 3D fighting game. Let’s continue to collect and cherish Godzilla on physical media. On November 3, be sure support Pipeworks Software’s remastered version on cartridge for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Learn More

Although not shown on screen, the report written by Shiro Miyasaka is also dated “July 28, 2000,” and the novelization written by the screenwriter himself also places the events in the year 2000. 1985: Tim Burton’s film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is released in the US. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is filmed at Warner Bros. Studios. [Under the direction of a Japanese-looking director and crew, Godzilla crushes a wired radio-controlled tank and King Ghidorah attacks, piloted by a single operator. Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) bursts onto the volcano and building set on his bicycle. Both Godzilla and King Ghidorah are newly created, which makes them strangely cute. However, because the appearance and design were unauthorized, Warner would later pay royalties. Godzilla also appears in Pee-wee’s room in the opening scene, with a Godzilla mask that appears to be made by Ogawa Rubber in the corner of the record player, and a fairly large Godzilla figurine by the window. (The shape of the dorsal fin suggests it is an American-made figurine, but it differs from those made by Aurora (Monogram) and POLARLIGHTS.) Even more captivating are the two Red King figurines by the window. (Unreleased in Japan (on video).)

August 10

1990: After having their anti-nuclear energy bacteria stolen by Saradia agents, Bio Major causes an artificial explosion at Mt. Mihara at 2:00 PM, and sends Goto to steal it. The JSDF deploys Super Monsters x2 to prevent Godzilla from invading Tokyo, but Godzilla lands at Odawara and confronts Biollante at Lake Ashi in Godzilla vs Biollante [The date on Colonel Gondo’s watch reads “10” and the day of the week reads “Fri.”] The film’s in-story timeline for Godzilla vs Biollante is five years after Godzilla (1984), as indicated by captions and dialogue. The inscription on the “Godzilla Trace Monument” at the Godzilla Memorial Lounge in Nishi-Shinjuku reads, “Godzilla appeared in Tokyo in 1985, devastating the Shinjuku area and leaving his footprints here.” This suggests the film is set in 1990. In the same year, August is the only month in which the 10th falls on a Friday.

1944: Nippon Eigasha’s newsreel “Nippon News No. 219” is released. A portion of the “submarine training” footage is reused 10 years later as news footage of the frigate depth charge attack in the first “Godzilla” film. [Available on NHK’s “War Testimony Archives”]
