「わざとこわすんじゃないよ。じゃまだからどいてくれって感じでこわすんだ。あくまで自然にね。」

“Don’t break it on purpose. Just break it to get out of the way. Just do it naturally.”

「自然に」を意識する円谷は、このセットに橋をつるワイヤーなどは使わなかった。かなり重量のあるセットだが、ゴジラの力だけでこわした方が自然な感じが出る。

Tsuburaya, who is conscious of “natural” design, did not use any wires to hang the bridge in this set. Although the set is quite heavy, it feels more natural to break it with just Godzilla’s power.

ひざまで水の入ったプールで、中島はゆっくりとかちどき橋に近づいていく。大量にたかれたスモークと背後でゆらめく本物の炎が実にリアルだ。

In a pool with water up to his knees, Nakajima slowly approaches Kachidoki Bridge. The large amount of smoke and the real flames flickering in the background are very realistic.

「いくよ。スタート!」

“Let’s go. Start!”

ここは円谷が直接、演技を指導していた。

Tsuburaya was directly teaching acting here.

「そこだ。両手で横から持ち上げて、ひっくり返せ。」

“There you are. Pick it up from the sides with both hands and turn it over.”

めずらしく円谷が具体的な指示を出した。中島ゴジラがかちどき橋に両手をかけ、ゆっくり持ち上げる。金属製のミニチュアは重い。ましてゴジラの腕は自由がきかない。

Unusually, Tsuburaya gave specific instructions. Godzilla Nakajima puts both hands on Kachidoki Bridge and slowly lifts it up. Metal miniatures are heavy. Moreover, Godzilla’s arms cannot move freely.

「ええいっ、じゃまだ!」

“Yes, it’s in the way!”

円谷の指示どおりの気持ちになった。徐々に持ち上がるかちどき橋。やがて橋は自分の重さで「自然に」グルンと横転し、プールに落ちた。

He felt like he was following Tsuburaya’s instructions. Kachidoki Bridge is gradually rising. Eventually, the bridge “spontaneously” rolled over under its own weight and fell into the pool.

「カット。オーケーだ!」

“Cut. Okay!”

今度は一発で成功した。映画では、その衝撃で対岸の築地の市場に大きな波が打ち寄せ、船がほんろうされる。

This time he succeeded in the first try. In the movie, the impact causes a large wave to crash into the Tsukiji market on the opposite shore, destroying the ship.

かちどき橋をこわしたあと、ゴジラが夜の海に帰っていくシーンも、この新しいプールで撮影された。ゴジラが防衛隊の戦闘機の編隊と戦うシーンだ。「たのむぞ!」「やってくれ!」と歓声をあげる人々。

The scene where Godzilla returns to the sea at night after destroying Kachidoki Bridge was also filmed at this new pool. This is the scene where Godzilla fights a formation of defense force fighter planes. People cheered, “Let’s go!” and “Let’s do it!”
