中島がその取っ手につかまり、ぐいっと引き寄せると、ゴジラの体がググッと水中に沈んだ。

Nakajima grabbed the handle and pulled it, and Godzilla’s body sank into the water.

「おおっ、うまくいったぞ。」

“Oh, it worked.”

だれかの声がかすかに聞こえた。合図役の開米が横にいる。まもなく、ポンと背中をたたかれた。

I could faintly heard someone’s voice. Kaimei, who acts as a signal, is next to him. Soon, he was patted on the back.

「海の上(ここではプールの水の上)に顔を出せ。」という合図だ。

It is a signal that says, “Put your face above the sea (in this case, above the pool water).”

「よしっ、ゴジラ様の登場だ。」

“Okay, Godzilla-sama is here.”

ところが水中では、中島が苦戦していた。

However, Nakajima was struggling underwater.

「うつ、お、重い･･････。」

“I’m depressed…I’m heavy…”

もぐったのはいいが、今度は着ぐるみがたっぷりと水を吸ってしまい、重くてなかなか上半身を水から上げることができないのだ。けれどだからといって上げなければ大変だ。いくら中島でも、今度こそおぼれてしまう。やっとのことで水面から上半身を出した。

It was a good thing that he had gotten into it, but this time his costume had absorbed a lot of water, and it was so heavy that he couldn’t lift his upper body out of the water. ところが顔を上げるとき、ゴジラの首のあたりにあるのぞき穴から、水がドッと流れこんできた。

そのため、外の様子がまるでわからない。

「だいじょうぶかい、春さん。」

“It’s okay, Haru-san.”

あわてて声をかけたのは開米だった。

「水、飲んでないか?」

“Aren’t you drinking water?”

「平気、平気。水なんかちょっとくらい飲んだって、どうってことないよ。」

“I’m fine, I’m fine. Even if I drink a little water, it won’t be a big deal.”

水に強い中島だからこそ、こなせる演技である。

This is a performance that Nakajima can pull off because he is strong in water.

これも、ある日のプール撮影のことだった。

「いいよ、春さん入って。」

“Okay, Haru-san, come in.”

中島のゴジラが何人もの助けを借りて、ゆっくりと水の中に入る。

Nakajima’s Godzilla slowly enters the water with the help of many people.

「いいかい、ゆっくりと水の中を歩いていくんだ。･･････おい、春さん、何やってるんだよ。ふざけてないで、まじめにやってくれよ。」

“Listen, we’re going to slowly walk through the water…Hey, Haru-san, what are you doing? Don’t play around, just do it seriously.”

見ると、ゴジラが腕を細かく振って、背泳ぎのようにプカプカ浮いている。

When I looked, Godzilla was waving his arms and floating like he was swimming on his back.

「おい、オヤジさんが見てたら怒るぞ。･･････なあ、春さん。･･････春さん?」

“Hey, if the old man sees it, he’ll get angry. Hey, Haru-san. Haru-san?”

どうも様子がおかしい。そのとき、スタッフのひとりが「あっ。」と大声をあげた。

Something isn’t quite right. At that moment, one of the staff members exclaimed, “Oh!”

「大変だ。水底のケーブルが漏電してる。春さん、感電してるんだ!」

“It’s terrible. There’s a leak in the cable at the bottom of the water. Haru-san, you’re getting an electric shock!”

大急ぎで電源を切る。次いで水中に電気が流れていないことを確かめると、開米たちがあわてて飛びこむ。

Turn off the power quickly. After confirming that there was no electricity flowing in the water, Kaimai and his friends hurriedly jumped in.

「わあっ、春さん、失神してるぞ!」

“Wow, Haru-san, you’re fainting!”

さすがのゴジラも、漏電には弱かったようである。

As expected, Godzilla also seems to be weak against electrical leakage.

開米と中島は年が近いこともあって、仲がよかった。互いに「春さん」、「チョーさん」と呼び合う仲で、2人のコンビでゴジラを動かすことも多かった。

Kaimei and Nakajima were close in age, so they got along well. They called each other “Haru-san” and “Cho-san,” and the two of them often moved Godzilla together.

開米は、ゴジラの口の開閉も担当していた。ゴジラのあごにつながったワイヤーがしっぽの途中から出ていて、それを開米がキャメラに写らない位置で操作するのだ。木製の目玉も同様にして動かした。むずかしいのは、ゴジラが移動しながら口を開け閉めするときだ。ゴジラが前に出ようとするときにワイヤーを引き、ゴジラが後ろへひっくり返りそうになったことも何度かあった。2人の呼吸がと合わないとうまく撮れないシーンだ。

Kaimei was also in charge of opening and closing Godzilla’s mouth. A wire connected to Godzilla’s jaw comes out from the middle of its tail, and Kaimei manipulates it in a position that is not visible to the camera. He moved the wooden eyeball in the same way. The difficult part is when Godzilla opens and closes his mouth while moving. There were several times when Godzilla tried to move forward and pulled the wire, causing Godzilla to almost fall backwards. It’s a scene that won’t work if the two people’s breathing doesn’t match.
