「まず時計台の鐘がなる。すると、ゴジラが『何だろう?』という感じで時計台に触れる。すると、ゴジラのパワーで時計台がくずれてしまうんだ。別にこわそうとしてこわすんじゃない。さわったらくずれてしまったという感じでいこう。その方が生き物として自然じゃないか?」

“First, the clock tower’s bell rings. Then, Godzilla touches the clock tower, thinking, ‘What is that?’ Then, Godzilla’s power causes the clock tower to collapse. Don’t try to break it. Touch it. Let’s just say that it collapsed and shifted. Isn’t that more natural for living things?”

この円谷のアイデアに、スタッフのみんなが賛成した。ゴジラは人間のように二足歩行だが、円谷は人間のような動きをしないようにとくり返し注意していた。

All the staff members agreed with Tsuburaya’s idea. Godzilla walks on two legs like a human, but Tsuburaya was repeatedly careful not to move like a human.

「ただこわすなら、体力さえあればだれだってできる。オヤジさんは、おれに演技をさせてくれようとしているんだ。」

“If you just want to break it, anyone can do it as long as they have the physical strength. The old man is trying to get me to act.”

中島も喜んだ。いくらB2役者とはいえ、中島にだって役者としてのプライドがある。ゴジラの中入ってはいるが、芝居ができるのだ。胸がワクワクする。

Nakajima was also pleased. Even though Nakajima is a B2 actor, he still has pride as an actor. Although he is inside Godzilla, he can still act. His feelings are nervous.

中島は着ぐるみに入る前に、円谷といっしょにステージに上がり、打ち合わせをした。

Before Nakajima entered the costume, he went on stage with Tsuburaya and had a meeting.

「いいか、あくまで「何だろう?」という感じで時計台に腕を伸ばすんだ。少し触れればくずれるように作ってあるからだいじょうぶ。そういうわけだ。あとはまかせた。」

“Listen, I just stretched out my arm toward the clock tower, thinking, “What is this?” It’s okay because it’s made so that it will fall apart if you touch it a little. That’s how it is. I left the rest to you.”

それだけ言うと、円谷はさっさとステージからおりてしまった。

After saying that, Tsuburaya quickly left the stage.

「オヤジさん、役者としてのおれを信用してくれたんだな。」

“Oyaji-san, I guess you trusted me as an actor.”

うれしかった。何がなんでも一発で成功させたいと中島は思った。けれど、不安がないわけではなかった。なんといってもゴジラの着ぐるみはかたい。特にひじの部分は直角に曲がったままだ。いく「自然に」と言われても、そっと腕を伸ばすことなどできそうもない。なにしろほとんど体からはなすことができない作りなのだから。

He was glad. Nakajima wanted to succeed no matter what. However, he was not without anxiety. After all, Godzilla’s costume is hard. In particular, the elbows remain bent at right angles. No matter how many people tell me to act “naturally,” I don’t think I’ll be able to just stretch out my arms. After all, it is made so that it can hardly be removed from the body.

「まかせてくれたのはうれしいけど、はたしてうまくやれるだろうか。」

“I’m glad you left it to me, but I wonder if I’ll be able to do it well.”

今度は不安の方が大きくなってきた。しかしもうやるしかない。中島は着ぐるみに入り、和光ビルの前に立った。

This time, his anxiety was growing. But I have no choice but to do it. Nakajima put on a costume and stood in front of the Wako Building.

「ようい、スタート!」

“Set, start!”

中島は懸命に腕を動かした。けれど腕はやはり思ったように動いてくれない。体全体を前に倒すようにして、なんとか時計台に右手がかかった。だが、体が前のめりになって、ビルがよく見えない。腕はいくらもがいてもかたくて動かない。中島はあせっていた。

Nakajima moved his arms vigorously. However, his arm still doesn’t move as expected. His entire body fell forward and his right hand somehow rested on the clock tower. However, his body was leaning forward and he couldn’t see the building clearly. No matter how much he struggled, his arms were stiff and wouldn’t move. Nakajima was in a hurry.

「ええい!」

“Yes!”

夢中で腕に力をこめると、時計台はガラガラと音を立ててくずれ落ちた。ふと気がつけば、ゴジラの右手の中に、その破片がある。無理にもぎ取ったような破片だった。とても「自然な動き」とはいえなかった。

In his fascination, he strained my arm, and the clock tower fell down with a thud. Suddenly, I noticed that the fragment was in Godzilla’s right hand. It was a piece that looked like it had been forcibly removed. It wasn’t a very “natural movement.”

開米に着ぐるみから出してもらった中島の耳に、円谷の声が小さくひびく。

Tsuburaya’s voice rang in Nakajima’s ears as he took him out of his costume by Kaimai [costume assistance].

「作り直そう。何日くらいかかる?」

“Let’s rebuild it. How many days will it take?”

美術スタッフにたずねている。中島は、「こんなできそこないで、芝居ができるか!」という、手塚の言葉を思い出していた。

He is asking the art staff. Nakajima remembered Tezuka’s words, “How can such a failure be able to perform?”

しかし円谷は、中島の方に向き直ると、笑みを浮かべながら言った。「だいじょうぶ、だいじょうぶ。しかたないよ。」

However, Tsuburaya turned to Nakajima and said with a smile. “It’s okay, it’s okay. I have no choice.”

円谷はわかっていたのだ。「できそこない」の着ぐるみで、必死に演技をする中島や手塚の苦労を。

Tsuburaya knew. The hardships of Nakajima and Tezuka, who are desperately trying to act in their “failed” costumes.
