こんな苦労の末、どうにかミニチュアセットはできあがった。当初、このミニチュアには、電柱にかんとくわたなべかれ電線が張ってなかった。美術監督の渡辺は、その道の大ベテラン。彼は電柱の大きさからすれば、電線は細すぎて見えないはず、と考えていた。そのミニチュアを前にして、じっと腕組みをしていたのは円谷だった。

After all this trouble, I managed to create a miniature set. Initially, this miniature did not have electric wires attached to the poles. Watanabe, the art director, is a veteran in the field. He thought that given the size of the pole, the wires would be too thin to see. It was Tsuburaya who was standing still with his arms folded in front of the miniature.

「うーん、もう少しこの街に、生活感がほしいな。」

Hmm, I want a little more sense of life in this town. ”

つまり、たしかに人間が暮らしている街なのだという感じがほしいというのだ。

In other words, he wanted the city to feel like it was a city where people actually lived.

「何か足りないんだよ。やっぱり電線だよな。」

“There’s something missing. It’s the electric wire after all.”

そう言い切る円谷の横から、キャメラマンの有川がこう提言した。

As Tsuburaya finished saying this, cameraman Arikawa suggested the following.

「非常に細い金属の線、例えば糸ヒューズなんかを使って電線の代わりにしたらどうでしょう。」さだまささつえいたんとう有川貞昌は、『ゴジラ』で撮影を担当し、のちに円谷のあとを受け、第2代の特技監督になる男である。その有川に、すかさず渡辺が反論する。

“Why not use a very thin metal wire, such as a string fuse, instead of an electric wire?” Sadamasa Arikawa, who was in charge of cinematography for “Godzilla,” later followed in Tsuburaya’s footsteps. He is the man who will become the second generation special skills manager. Watanabe immediately objects to Arikawa.

「そんなものを使ったって、見えないものは見えないんだ。電柱の高さが1.4メートルとして、電線の太さはだいたい1センチくらいなもの。それの25分の1だから、電柱の高さが60センチで、電線の太さはわずか0.4ミリ……。」

渡辺の言葉をさえぎるように、円谷が口を開いた。

Tsuburaya opened his mouth to interrupt Watanabe’s words.

「よしっ!そいつを、やってみよう。」

“Okay! Let’s try that.”

渡辺が食い下がる。

Watanabe bites back.

「でも、実際の太さは・・・・・・。」

“But the actual thickness is…”

「いいんだ。電線は都会の生活を表現するものだ。それを使わないことの方が、太さの問題よりも大きなうそになる。」

“That’s fine. Electric wires are an expression of city life. Not using them is a bigger lie than the thickness.”

こうまで言われては、円谷の言葉に従うしかない。美術のスタッフがしぶしぶ電線張りをはじめた。

With all that being said, I have no choice but to follow Tsuburaya’s words. The art staff reluctantly began installing the electrical wires.

「有川君。撮影班も手伝ってあげなさい。」

“Arikawa-kun. Please help the camera crew as well.”

「わかりました。おいみんな、手伝うぞ。」

“Okay. Hey guys, let me help you.”

撮影のスタッフたちが、ミニチュアをこわさないように、そっとセットに入る。ヒューズというのはとても細い。そして切れやすい。張っていくそばから、だれかが足を引っかけてすぐに切ってしまう。美術も撮影も、みんな昼食もそこそこに、休みなしで電線張りをした。額から汗がしたたり落ちる。その汗をぬぐおうと、ふと顔を上げた有川は自分の目を疑った。

The film crew enters the set quietly so as not to damage the miniatures. Fuses are very thin. And it cuts easily. Someone tripped over the soba and cut it right away. We worked on the art, took pictures, and everyone worked around the clock, including lunch, and working on the wires without a break. Sweat drips from my forehead. Arikawa suddenly looked up to wipe away the sweat and couldn’t believe his eyes.

「……………すごい。ここに街がある。銀座がある。」

“……It’s amazing. There’s a city here. Ginza is here.”

撮影をはじめるまではライトをつけない。ところどころにある常夜灯という小さなライトの明かりがあるだけだ。そのうす暗いスタジオの中で、ビルやヒューズの電線がチラチラと光って、まるで本当の街のように見えた。

Don’t turn on the lights until you start shooting. The only light was from small night lights here and there. Inside the dimly lit studio, the buildings and fuse wires flickered, making it look like a real city.

「そうか。オヤジさんの言っていた『生活感』っていうのは、こういうことだったんだ。」

“I see. This is what the old man was talking about when he meant ‘sense of life’.”

有川は、あらためて円谷の研ぎ澄まされた感性に敬服するのだった。

Arikawa once again admires Tsuburaya’s finely honed sensibilities.

しかしいざ撮影がはじまると、そんなのんきなことは言っていられない。撮影のための照明をつけると、ライトの熱でヒューズがだらっと垂れ下がってしまう。そうなるとまた張り直しだ。そのくり返しが、幾度となく続いた。

However, once the shooting started, he couldn’t say such carefree things. When he turned on the lights for taking pictures, the heat from the lights causes the fuse to droop. If that happens, he’ll have to re-tighten it again. This repetition continued over and over again.
