八つ当たりである。それからしばらくして、円谷は免許の必要がない映写機を手に入れ、「これで心置きなく残業ができるぞ。」と、喜んでいたという。

Eight hits. After a while, Tsuburaya got a projectless projector that did not need a license, and was pleased, saying, “I can work overtime without worrying.”

毎日のように残業が入る、ということは、それだけ特撮という仕事が手探りだったということだ。『ゴジラ』以降でさえ、このような状態だった。まして『ゴジラ』は、着ぐるみの制作といい、ミニチュアの街並み作りといい、やろうとすることは初めてのことばかり。特にミニチュアに関しては手探りの状態が長く続いた。

The fact that overtime work on a daily basis means that the job of special effects was fumbling. 初代ゴジラの身長は、50メートルに設定されている。これはまず、円谷の「銀座の和光ビルの時計台をこわそう。」という希望からはじまった。和光ビルは銀座を象徴する建物で、空襲による焼失をまぬがれた。7階のビルの上に高さ9メートルの時計台がのっている。それをこわそうというのだ。「銀座を歩いたとき、ビルの上から頭がのぞく高さに。」ということで、50メートルという身長が設定された。着ぐるみの身長2メートルに合わせて、ミニチュアはすべて、25分の1の大きさで作られることになった。

この銀座の街並みのミニチュアは、実写の写真と見比べながら、本物と少しもちがわないように、まるまる1ヶ月をかけて制作された。しかしこれにも、大変な苦労話がある。

The miniature of this Ginza cityscape was produced over a month, comparing it with a live-action photo, so that it would not be a little different from the real thing. But this also has a story of hard work.

「成田君、君はこっちのビルをやってくれ。」

“Narita, you do this building.”

当時、美術大学の学生だった成田亨も、アルバイトとして美術スタッフに加わっていた。とにかく人手がほしい。

そんな思いから、美大のアルバイトや出入りの石こう屋が、ミニチュアの街づくりに大勢参加していたのである。

「このビルはもう少し大きい方がいいかな。」

石こう職人などは日ごろ、長年つちかった自分のカンと経験で仕事をしている。いちいち図面などを見て作るということはあまりなかった。

「仕事っていうのは、自分の目と腕でやるもんだ。これはこうした方がいい、とか、こっちはもっとかっこうよく、とかな。そういうのは、自分が決めるもんだ。機械じゃねえんだからよ。」

そんな職人の言葉に、学生たちも同調した。

「そうですよね。これもひとつひとつが作品なんだから、自分の感じ方や表現の仕方で作っていいですよね。」

こんな具合にミニチュアができあがっていく。ある程度作業が進んだところでミニチュアを並べてみる。すると、実際とはかなりかけはなれた街並みができあがってしまった。例えば、5階建てのビルの方が7階建てのビルよりも高かったり、電柱の高さがまちまちだったり……。

A miniature is completed in this way. Try arranging miniatures when the work has progressed to some extent. Then, the cityscape that was quite a lot of work was completed. For example, a five-story building is higher than a 7-story building, or the height of the telephone pole varies.

「何だ、このミニチュアは。ちゃんと図面どおりの縮尺で作ったのか!」

“What, this miniature. Did you make it with a scale as shown in the drawing!”

その街並みを見て、美術の渡辺は、顔を真っ赤にして怒った。ミニチュアを作った石こう職人や美大のアルバイトたちは、その剣幕に顔を上げることもできない。

Looking at the cityscape, Watanabe of fine arts, turned his face red and angry. Stone craftsmen who made miniatures and part-time jobs of the University of Fine University cannot have an angry look.

「だめだ、全部作り直しだ。こんないいかげんなミニチュアが使えるか!」

こうしてせっかく作ったミニチュアは、一から作り直しになった。
