1954年、東宝のプロデューサー田中友幸の企画によって製作が決定した第1作の『ゴジラ』。その原作を依頼されたのは、怪生物ものや秘境ロマンを得意とする探偵作家の香山滋だった。

The first Godzilla movie was produced in 1954 based on a plan by Toho producer Tomoyuki Tanaka. The person who was asked to write the original story was Shigeru Kayama, a detective writer who specializes in monster stories and unexplored romances.

香山が書き上げたのは「G作告検討用台本」と題されたシナリオ形式のプロットで、これが『ゴジラ』の正式な原作にあたる。ストーリーの基本的な流れは完成した映画とほぼ同じだが、山根博士がかなりエキセントリックな人物として描かれているのが興味深い。生物学者としてゴジラを死なせたくない博士は、5万ボルト鉄条網作戦を知ると、なんと単身、発電所を襲撃するという暴挙に出るのである。幸い娘の恵美子が駆けつけて制止したため大事にはいたらなかったが、鉄条網を突破したゴジラを見て喜びの声を上げてしまうというのが、香山の考えた山根博士だった。

What Kayama wrote was a scenario-style plot entitled “Script for Examining G-Sensation,” and this is the official original work for “Godzilla.” The basic flow of the story is almost the same as the finished film, but it is interesting that Dr. Yamane is portrayed as a rather eccentric person. As a biologist, he doesn’t want Godzilla to die, and when he learns of the 50,000-volt barbed wire operation, he goes on a rampage by attacking a power plant by himself. Fortunately, his daughter Emiko rushed in and stopped him, so he was not seriously injured, but Dr. Yamane thought that Kayama would cry out in joy when he saw Godzilla break through the barbed wire.

しかし、ゴジラ自体が怪物なのに、博士までがそんな性格では浮いてしまう―そう考えた脚本家の村田武雄は、博士の設定を良識ある一般人に変更。映画のような人物像になったというわけである。村田から変更理由を聞かされた香山も素直に納得して、了承したという。

However, even though Godzilla himself is a monster, even the doctor’s personality would be a bit off-putting. Screenwriter Takeo Murata thought so and changed the character of the doctor to a commoner person with common sense. He became a movie-like figure. When Kayama was told the reason for the change by Murata, he was easily convinced and agreed.
