The first Godzilla suit

これが第1作「ゴジラ」で実際に活躍した, 撮影用ゴジラスーツ第1号。中の人間が“動けるよう、各関節部にゆとりをもたせてある。下の写真は,その製作風景であるが,前ページのプロトタイプと比較していただきたい。全体に人間にちかいスタイルになり、腕も太く長くなっているし、前方視界も, 背をまっすぐ立たせたことにより改善された(周知のとおり,のどのあたりから前 を見る)。スーツの重量もプロトタイプよりも軽量化されてはいるが,やはり撮影は困難をきわめた。 なにしろ、思うように足をあげて歩くことができないのであ る。それだから画面にあの重量感がでたともいえるが、動きがとれず転倒することもしばしばだった。そのため, 初代ゴジラで は、ギニョールや足だけの”部分ゴジラ“も多用されている。種々の製作上の困難を克服してスクリーンに登場した初代ゴジラは,人形アニメによる特撮怪物など足もとにもおよばぬ活躍を見せたのだ。

This is the first Godzilla suit for photography that actually played an active part in the first work “Godzilla.” The human inside has a space in each joint so that it can move. The photo below shows the production scene, but please compare it with the prototype on the previous page. The overall style is similar to humans. The arms are thicker and longer, and the forward visibility is improved by standing upright (as we all know, looking forward from the throat). The weight of the suit is also lighter than the prototype. However, it was still difficult to shoot. After all, he couldn’t walk with my legs raised as he wanted. Therefore, in the first Godzilla, “partial Godzilla” with only guignol and feet is often used. The first Godzilla, who overcame various production difficulties and appeared on the screen, showed an activity that did not reach the feet such as special effects monsters by doll animation.
