“60,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “Godzilla”

文学ではなくて、『ゴジラ』と同じ映画に関して香山が名前をあげていたのは、エルモ・リンカーン主演の『類猿人ターザン』(一九一八年)、W・D・グリフィス監督の『渇仰の舞姫』(一九二〇年)、そして海底撮影で有名なウィリアムソン兄弟の数々の南海ものだった。「類猿人ターザン」は一時間ほどの映画で、アフリカの動物などの実写映像が組みこまれている。香山がもっている南方のイメージは、どうやらアフリカとアジアが奇妙に混同するものだった。

Instead of literature, Kayama mentioned the same movie as Godzilla: Tarzan the Ape Man (1918) starring Elmo Lincoln and W.D. Dance Princess (1920), and a number of Nankai films by the Williamson brothers, famous for their undersea photography. “Tarzan the Ape Man” is an hour-long film that incorporates live-action footage of African animals and other animals. Kayama’s image of the South seems to be a strange mixture of Africa and Asia.

特筆すべき影響を与えたのはウィリアムソン兄弟の作品だった。彼らが海中撮影を担当した一九一六年版のサイレント映画『海底六万哩』を観ると、この作品が香山のゴジラ創造に大きな影響を与えたことがわかる。これはジュール・ヴェルヌのSF小説の『海底二万海里』の映画化作品であリーグる。リーグは約三マイルなのでこの計算となる。本物の潜水艦を使用していて、ノーチラス号のイメージも具体的である。監督はスチュアート・ペイトンなのだが、海中撮影のウィリアムソン兄弟の名のほうが鮮烈に記憶に残ったようだ。特撮監督円谷英二やハリーハウゼンの名前がドラマ本編の監督よりも有名で一人歩きをしているのにも似ている。特撮やトリック映画の場合には、魅力的な映像を作り出す側が名前や栄誉を占めるものだ。

A notable influence was the work of the Williamson brothers. If you watch the 1916 version of the silent film “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” which they were in charge of shooting under the sea, you can see that this work had a great influence on Kayama’s creation of Godzilla. This is the film adaptation of Jules Verne’s science fiction novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The league is about 3 miles, so this is the calculation. A real submarine is used, and the image of the Nautilus is also concrete. The director is Stuart Peyton, but the name of the Williamson brothers, who filmed underwater, seems to have been more vividly remembered. Tokusatsu director Eiji Tsuburaya and Harryhausen are more famous than the directors of the main drama, and it is similar to walking alone. In the case of tokusatsu and trick movies, the name and honor are given to those who create attractive images.

『ゴジラ』のなかで古生物学者山根博士が口にする「二百万年前のジュラ紀」という数字が妥当性を欠くので議論の的になってきた。これはヴェルヌの「二」万海里という表現からの影響もあるのではないか。『ゴジラ』の前年に作られた『原子怪獣現わる』も原題は「二万尋から来た獣」という。金星からやってきた『地球へ2千万マイル』(一九五七年)という作品もある。「二」という数字を採用するのがジュール・ヴェルヌの系譜の証なのかもしれない。

In “Godzilla,” paleontologist Dr. Yamane mentions that the “Jurassic period two million years ago” has been the subject of controversy due to its lack of validity. This may have been influenced by Verne’s expression of “2,000,000 nautical miles.” The original title of “Atomic Monster Appears,” which was made the year before “Godzilla,” is “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.” There is also a work called “20 Million Miles to Earth” (1957) that came from Venus. Adopting the number “two” may be proof of Jules Verne’s genealogy.

この作品の『ゴジラ』への影響はそれだけにとどまらない。ヴェルヌの原作では、ネモ艦長のノーチラス号の船内に招待される、というか事実上監禁されるのは、生物学者のアルロック博士、助手のコンセイユ、鯨うちのネッドランドの男三人のはずなのに、映画には四人目として博士の娘が登場する。これが、古生物学者の山根博士父娘、弟子の芹沢博士、潜水夫の尾形の四人組の原型となった。学者とその娘、学者の学問的後継者、行動する男、というパターンを香山はもらったのだろう。

The influence of this work on “Godzilla” does not stop there. In Verne’s original work, the three men who are invited, or in fact confined, to Captain Nemo’s Nautilus are the biologist Dr. Aronnax, his assistant Conseil, and the whale Ned Land. The doctor’s daughter appears as the fourth person in the movie. This became the prototype of the quartet consisting of father and daughter paleontologist Dr. Yamane, his disciple Dr. Serizawa, and diver Ogata. Kayama must have received the pattern of a scholar and his daughter, a scholar’s academic successor, and a man in action.

なかでも娘の導入が物語の鍵となってくる。「ゴジラ』で河内桃子が演じる娘の恵美子は父親に対して控え目な態度をとっているが、初期の『G作品検討用台本」を読むとずいぶんと異なった性格が与えられていたことがわかる。そのなかで恵美子は「ゴジラと対決する」と言って力こぶをつくりアマゾン「女戦士」と尾形に呼ばれる。また、ゴジラが放射性因子を帯びているので、それを世界が知ったら第三次世界大戦を引き起こすかもしれない、と危ぶんで真相の発表をためらう父親に「ほ、ほ、ほ、お父さまはいつそんな弱気な学者になられましたの?真実をありのままに語るのが、学者の使命じゃありません?」と叱りつける。山根博士が学者の良心をもつように自分の娘に諭されるという展開になっていた。

Among them, the introduction of the daughter is the key to the story. The daughter Emiko, played by Momoko Kawachi in “Godzilla,” has a reserved attitude towards her father, but was given a very different personality when read in early “G Work Review Scripts,” I understand. Among them, Emiko says, “I will face off against Godzilla,” and creates her bicep, and Ogata calls her an Amazon “female warrior.” Also, Godzilla is carrying a radioactive factor, and if the world finds out about it, it might trigger World War III. When did you become such a timid scientist? Isn’t it the mission of a scientist to tell the truth as it is?” Dr. Yamane was instructed by his daughter to have the conscience of a scholar.

じつは、『海底六万哩』のほうでも、アメリカ大統領から「エイブラハム・リンカーン号」に乗ってくれという手紙がアルロック博士のもとにくるが、応じるかどうか躊躇していた博士を焚きつけたのが娘だった。しかも、承諾した父親に抱きついたりする積極的なキャラクターとして描かれている。恵美子も同じように新しい価値観をもった現代娘として構想されていたのだろう。それを象徴するように、大戸島で尾形といっしょに水着姿になったスチール写真も残っている。これはシーンそのものが削除されたのでお蔵入りになってしまった。

In fact, even in 60,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Dr. Allock received a letter from the President of the United States asking him to board the Abraham Lincoln, but he was hesitant about whether or not to accept it. Moreover, she is portrayed as an aggressive character who hugs her father with her consent. Like Emiko, she must have been conceived as a modern girl with new values. As if to symbolize this, there is still a still photo of her in a swimsuit with Ogata on Odo Island. This was shelved because the scene itself was deleted.

その設定の名残が、オキシジェン・デストロイヤーに関する秘密を守ってくれという芹沢博士との約束を破り「よろこんで裏切り者となります」と決意するところに表れている。芹沢の秘密を尾形に教える約束違反をしたのは、ゴジラの被害を受けた人々の姿に恵美子が耐えられなくなったせいだが、自分の意思を貫く強さが、香山原作をシナリオ化した映画にも残ったわけだ。

The remnants of that setting appear in the fact that she breaks his promise to Dr. Serizawa to keep the secret about the Oxygen Destroyer and decides to “be a traitor willingly.” The reason Emiko broke her promise to tell Ogata Serizawa’s secret was because she couldn’t stand the sight of the people affected by Godzilla, but her strength to carry out her own will is the basis of Kayama’s original work. It remained in the movie that made the scenario.
