突如、富士山火口から出現したゴジラ は立ちはだかるアンギラスを撃退し、そ の後、石油コンビナートを破壊する。だ が、倉庫のなかからもう1匹のゴジラが 現れ、2匹のゴジラの対決が開始された。

Godzilla suddenly appeared from the crater of Mt. However, another Godzilla appeared from inside the warehouse, and a showdown between the two Godzillas began.

やがて最初のゴジラはその正体を現し た。それは侵略宇宙人に操られた、全身を宇宙金属に覆われたロボット怪獣メカ ゴジラで、ゴジラとの戦いの末、トラブ ルを起こして沖縄の秘密基地に帰還した。 メカゴジラの修理に手間取る宇宙人は宮島博士を脅迫し、修理を完了させた。

Before long, the first Godzilla revealed its true form. It is a robot monster, MechaGodzilla, whose whole body is covered with space metal, manipulated by invading aliens. The aliens, who are having trouble repairing MechaGodzilla, blackmails Dr. Miyajima into completing the repair.

安豆味王族の末裔、 那美は沖縄の守護 獣キングシーサーを甦らせ、メカゴジラ と戦わせる。やがて海中からゴジラが出 現し、3匹による決戦が始まった― 。

Nami, a descendant of the Anzumi royal family, revived Okinawa’s guardian beast, King Shisa, to fight against MechaGodzilla. Before long, Godzilla emerges from the sea, and a decisive battle between the three begins.

海洋博の開催を翌年に控えた伝説の島、沖縄を舞台に、ゴジラそっくりのロボット怪獣メカゴジラを登場させた、ゴジラ映画20周年記念作品。

Set in the legendary island of Okinawa, where the Ocean Expo will be held next year, this film commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Godzilla movie, featuring a robot monster MechaGodzilla that looks just like Godzilla.

メカゴジラのデザインは、”ゴジラをロボットにしたら”という発想の下、ゴジラのブリキのオモチャを叩いて鋭角な直線を生かし、これを基調にして劇中のシャープなフォルムを誕生させた。特技監督の中野昭慶は、「メカゴジラの着ぐるみがゴジラの着ぐるみと対峙したときに、ゴジラと対等の動きができるか心配だった」と語っており、スタッフで何回も検討を行った結果、その心配が解消できたという。

MechaGodzilla’s design was based on the idea of “making Godzilla into a robot,” and the sharp straight lines of Godzilla’s tin toys were tapped to create a sharp form in the play. Special effects director Teriyoshi Nakano said, “When the MechaGodzilla costume confronted the Godzilla costume, I was worried if I could move on an equal footing with Godzilla.” As a result of many discussions with the staff, It is said that the worry was resolved.

メカゴジラの激しい格闘シーンは、美術館に出かけて西洋甲冑を研究し、重いものを装着した場合のスーツメーションを考慮した演出が行われている。

MechaGodzilla’s fierce fighting scenes are directed by going to museums and researching western armor, taking into account suitmation when wearing heavy armor.

また、メカゴジラがスパークしながら本体を現すシーンや、クライマックスのゴジラとキングシーサーに向けて光線を連射するシーンは光学合成の独壇場で、 徹底して派手に展開されるなど、本作はかつての東宝特撮映画にはなかったコントラストの強い、新たな特撮イメージを誕生させている。 (中村)
