“Terror of MechaGodzilla” Tomoko Ai Interview

その儚くかなしい生い立ち、 そして美しいたたずまいで、多くのファンを魅了した、サイボーグ少女・真船桂。

Cyborg girl, Masafune Katsura, who attracted many fans with its fleeting and unbeatable background.

その特異な存在を演じきった藍とも子さんに、大抜擢の経緯と今の想いを伺った。

We asked Tomoko Ai, who played the unique being, about the history of the large selection and his current thoughts.

特撮の現場を見に行く機会がなかったのが残念だったという藍氏。チタノザウルスはイメージだけで演技をした。

——— 藍さんは『メカゴジラの逆襲』の前年、『ウルトラマンレオ』(74年)で女優デビューされましたね。

——— You made your acting debut in Ultraman Leo (1974) the year before Terror of MechaGodzilla.

藍 Ai
はい。18歳のときモデルクラブに所属して、 全日空や資生堂のポスターなんかをやっていました。1年くらい経ったときに、社長に『ウルトラマンレオ』の撮影現場に連れていかれて、1 シーンだけゲストの形で出演させていただいたんです。

Yes. When I was 18, I belonged to a model club and did posters for All Nippon Airways and Shiseido. About a year later, the president took me to the shooting site of “Ultraman Leo,” and I was allowed to appear as a guest in only one scene.

——— 第26話から松木晴子隊員役で準レギュラー になりますね。

——— From the 26th episode, you will become a semi-regular role as Haruko Matsuki.

藍 Ai
いま思えば、それがカメラテストの代わりだったんでしょうね。演技経験がまったくなかったので、本当にいっぱいいっぱいでした。慣れる間もなく『メカゴジラの逆襲』のオーディションがあって、時間がなくて『レオ』のMAC隊員の服のまま行ったんです。でも着いたらオーディションはすでに終わっていて……。本 多猪四郎)監督と製作の所(健二)さんが残っていらっしゃって、そこで少しお話をしました。

Now that I think about it, that must have been a substitute for the camera test. I had no acting experience at all, so it was really full. Not long after I got used to it, I had an audition for “Terror of MechaGodzilla,” and I didn’t have time, so I went in the clothes of the MAC member of “Leo.” But when I got there, the audition was already over… The director (Ishiro Honda) and the producer (Kenji) stayed behind, and we talked a little.

——— 時間外のオーディションをしてくださったんですね。

——— So you did an audition after hours.

藍 Ai
でも特に台詞を読んだ覚えはなくて、いろんな話を聞かれたと記憶しています。本多先生からサイボーグのヒロインの役だという説明は 受けましたが、あまりピンときていませんでした。

But I don’t remember reading the lines in particular, and I remember being asked various stories. I received an explanation from Mr. Honda that she would play the role of the cyborg heroine, but it didn’t really click with me.

——— 結果は、見事真船桂役を射止められました。

——— As a result, I got the role of Katsura Mafune.

藍 Ai
驚きました。演技経験も少ないし、遅刻してきた上に隊員服だし(笑)、印象は悪かったと思ったのに。あとで所さんから、「本多監督とすれ違ったときのお辞儀がよかった」と言っていただいたので、それが結果に影響したのかもしれません。

I was surprised. I don’t have much acting experience, I was late, and I was wearing a soldier’s uniform (laughs), so I thought I had a bad impression. Mr. Tokoro later said, “I liked how you bowed when you passed Director Honda,” so that may have influenced the result.

——— 映画初出演でヒロイン。大抜擢ですね。

——— The heroine in her first appearance in a movie. It’s a big selection.

藍 Ai
神経が太かったのか、緊張はそれほどしな かったんです。そんなにすごいことだと分かってなかったからですかね。

Maybe I had a lot of nerves, but I wasn’t that nervous. Maybe it’s because I didn’t realize it was such a big deal.

実は本多先生がじ だけすごい方かも存じ上げなくて･･････。徐々に結髪さんとかスタッフの方たちから、大監督な んだと聞いてだんだん緊張していった感じでしょうか。本多先生はスタッフの先をどんどん歩 いていくようなキビキビした方で、でも丁寧で穏やかで、一度も怒られたことはありませんでした。

In fact, I didn’t even know that Mr. Honda was such a great person… Do you feel that you gradually became nervous when you heard from the hairdresser and staff that he was the big director, Honda? Mr. Honda was a brisk person who always seemed to get ahead of the staff, but he was polite and calm, and he never once got angry with me.

——— サイボーグという役作りで一番気を遣ったのはどんなところですか。

——— What did you pay most attention to when creating the role of cyborg?

藍 Ai
笑わないということですかね。私は普段からよく笑っているので、けっこう大変でした。本多先生からも、ゆっくり話すこと、感情を込め ないようにすることを最初に教えられました。ただ時には感情を入れるところもあって、そのメリハリが難しかったんですが、演技や喋り方に対する先生の指導が的確でしたので、ほとんどNGもなかったです。あと、先生から『恐龍』 の言葉のイントネーションに注意するように言われました。

Does that mean you don’t laugh? I usually laugh a lot, so it was quite difficult. Mr. Honda also taught me first to speak slowly and not to put my feelings into being a girlfriend. However, there were times when I wanted to put some emotion into it, and it was difficult to get the right balance, but the teacher’s guidance on acting and speaking was accurate, so there were almost no retakes. Also, my teacher told me to pay attention to the intonation of the word “dinosaur.”

——— 銀色のスーツのほかに私服のような衣装もありますね。

——— In addition to the silver suit, there is also a costume that looks like plain clothes.

藍 Ai
衣装は、スタッフの方と渋谷の西武に買い に行きました。横須賀で着ていたのがお気に入 りで、撮影後にいただいたと思います。銀色のスーツもお気に入りでした。

The staff and I went to Seibu in Shibuya to buy costumes. The one I wore in Yokosuka was my favorite, and I think I got it after the shoot. I also liked the silver suit.

——— 平田昭彦さんとの共演はいかがでしたか。

——— How was working with Akihiko Hirata?

藍 Ai
私のシーンはほぼ平田さんと一緒だったの ですが、平田さんが話しかけて緊張をほぐして くださいました。一度お食事にも連れていって くださったり、気さくで素敵な方でした。

Most of my scenes were with Mr. Hirata, but Mr. Hirata talked to me and eased my nerves. I took him to a meal once and he gave it to me, and he was a friendly and nice person.

——— ダミーの裸の胸が映るシーンは衝撃的でしたね。

——— The scene where the dummy’s bare breasts were reflected was shocking.

藍 Ai
手術のシーンは、準備に時間がかかって寝てしまったんです。始まる前はまだ胸のパーツ はなかったし、終わったあとはもう外されていたので、どうなっていたのか全然知りませんでした。アフレコのときに初めて見たんですが、そのときもなんとも思わなかったんです。アフレコに夢中だったからですかね。でも映画を観た姪っ子がビックリしてて、周りの反応におどろいたくらいです。

The surgery scene took a long time to prepare and I fell asleep. I didn’t have the chest part before it started, and it had already been removed after it was over, so I had no idea what was going on. I saw it for the first time during dubbing, but I didn’t think anything at that time either. Is it because I was crazy about post-recording? But my niece who saw the movie was surprised, and I was surprised at the reactions around her.

——— 藍さん自身は完成した映画を観ていかがでしたか。

——— Mrs. Ai, how did you feel when you saw the finished film?

藍 Ai
映画デビュー作なので、自分がスクリーン に映っているだけで衝撃でした。しかもこんな大きな役で、本当に選んでいただけてありがたかったと思います。一番印象に残っているシー ンは、宇宙人が豆みたいに動いていて、修理中のメカゴジラがバーンと映るところですね。どうやって撮っているのだろう!とびっくりしました。

It was my debut movie, so it was a shock just to see myself on the screen. Moreover, I am truly grateful that I was chosen for such a big role. The scene that left the biggest impression on me was when the aliens were moving like beans, and MechaGodzilla was being repaired. I wondered how they were shooting!

——— いま『メカゴジラの逆襲』を振り返ってい かがですか。

——— Looking back on “Terror of MechaGodzilla,” how do you feel?

藍 Ai
最初に出た映画がこんなにも長くファンの 方に愛されて、いまでもインタビューを受けたするって考えられないことですよね。チタノザウルスとメカゴジラ……特にメカゴジラは今でも思い入れがあるんです。ふと名前を見かけたりすると反応してしまいますね。この映画に出会えたことと、この映画に関わられた皆さんには本当に感謝しています。

It’s unthinkable that the first movie that came out has been loved by fans for so long and that you’re still being interviewed. Titanosaurus and MechaGodzilla… MechaGodzilla in particular still has a special place in my heart. If you happen to see the name, you will react. I am very grateful to have been in this movie and to everyone involved in this movie.

Tomoko Ai

1954年10月29日、神奈川県出身。当初はモデルクラブに所属していたが、その事務所の薦めで、テレビ『ウルトラマンレオ』(74年)で女 優デビューを飾る。劇場作品では「メカゴジラ の逆襲』(75年)や『爆発!暴走族』(75年)でヒロインを熱演し、その後はテレビドラマを主な活躍の場としている。

Born October 29, 1954 in Kanagawa Prefecture. Initially, she belonged to a model club, but she was recommended by her agency, and she made her debut as an actress in TV “Ultraman Leo” (1974). In theater works, she enthusiastically played the heroine in Terror of MechaGodzilla (1975) and “Explosion! Runaway Tribe” (1975). She has since made television drama her main activity.

同世代の役者も多い 『ウルトラマンレオ』 の現場とは違い、映画ならではの緊張感が漂っていたというが、真船信三役の平田昭彦氏にきさくに話しかけていただき心強かったという。

Unlike the scene of “Ultraman Leo” where there are many actors of the same generation, there was a sense of tension unique to the movie, but Mr. Akihiko Hirata, who plays Shinzo Mafune, kindly talked to me, which was reassuring.
