DR. SHIRAGAMI’S MERITS & DEMERITS

だけど、奥さんはどうしたんだ。離婚したのか、それともやはり死んだのか。それで男手一つで娘を溺愛して育て上げたのか。そこが、問題なのだ。せめて、新研究所で薔薇と娘の細胞を融合させるシーンに、フラッシュバックで幸せだった過去や、すくすくと育っていく英理加の姿が挿入され、涙の一筋でも流しながら作業する白神博士が描かれていたなら納得がいく。ミエミエの演出ではあるが、妙に冷静で額の汗を拭うシーンよりは、遥かに感情移入しやすいし、博士の実験の底に流れる思いが伝わってくるのではないか。

But what happened to your wife? Is she divorced or is she still dead? Is that why you doted on and raised her daughter single-handedly? That’s the problem. At the very least, in the scene where the rose and the daughter’s cells are fused in the new laboratory, the happy past and Erika’s growing up are inserted in flashbacks, and Dr. Shirakami is drawn while working while shedding a single tear. If it was, it would make sense. It’s a showy production, but it’s much easier to empathize with than the scene where he wipes the sweat from his forehead in a strangely calm manner, and I think it conveys the thoughts that flow at the bottom of the doctor’s experiments.

問題はあくまでも、薔薇の細胞と人間の細胞を融合させてしまった白神博士の動機が見えてこないことなのだ。単に科学者の学問的好奇心の成せる業なのか。善意的に解釈するなら、原案が同じ《博士号》を持つ小林晋一郎氏だけに、これまでの典型的なマッドサイエンティスト像には「そんなもんじゃないよ。」と、苦虫を噛み潰すような思いでいて、敢えて現実的で常識的な科学者像を追求したのかもしれないのだが・・・。愛する娘を失っ科学者は、皆そんな事をするとでも言うのだろうか。大体、50過ぎたいい大人が、しかも生命工学の世界的権威の科学者が、『死』を生物学的にも論理的にも認識できぬはずなかろうが……。それでも、彼はビオランテを作ってしまったのだ。何故なのか、繰り返し言うがそこがきちんと描かれなければ、白神博士の基盤が崩れてしまうのだ。

The problem is that Dr. Shirakami’s motives for fusing rose cells and human cells cannot be seen. Is it simply the work of a scientist’s academic curiosity? If you interpret it with good intentions, only Mr. Shinichiro Kobayashi, who has the same “doctoral degree” as the original, will bite the bitterness of the typical mad scientist image so far, “It’s not like that.” I may have dared to pursue a realistic and common-sense image of a scientist, but… I wonder if all scientists who lost their beloved daughter would do such a thing. Generally speaking, an adult over 50, and a world-renowned bioengineering scientist, should not be able to recognize “death” both biologically and logically… Still, he made Biollante. For some reason, I repeat, if this is not drawn properly, Dr. Shirakami’s foundation will collapse.

「あなた方はいつも自分達に理解出来ないという理由だけで反対するだけだ!将来のことも考えずに!」

“You always oppose just because you don’t understand! Without thinking about the future!”

良識とエゴの狭間でもがき苦しむのが人間の常である。だからこそ時には過ちも犯すし、不条理な言動もとってしまう。白神博士が何故にもがき苦しみ、何故にビオランテを作ってしまったのかが見えてこないこと。それが『ゴジビオ』最大の弱点である。

It is human nature to struggle between decency and ego. That’s why I sometimes make mistakes and also take absurd words and deeds. I can’t see why Dr. Shirakami struggled and why he created Biollante. That is GojiBio’s greatest weakness.

最後に、(3)の条件。天才科学者の『確信犯」たる所以は、己の研究に対する絶大なる確信とプライドにある。凡人には理解不能な研究と理論にこそ、天才科学者の存在価値がある。深く傷つき、世間から遠く離れながらも、人間として何とか最後の一線を保っていられるのは、そんな強烈な己に対する自負心があるからだ。それが崩れる時は、己の存在基盤が崩れることを意味する。だから、マッドサイエンティスト達は、時に過激に、そして時にヒステリックに己の研究の成果に一喜一憂するしかないのだ。しかるに白神博士はどうなのか。ビオランテ登場以後の台詞を思い起こしてみると、妙に冷静で分析的なくせに、どことなく不安げな台詞ばかりなのだ。初めてビオランテの触手を手にした時から、

Finally, condition (3). The reason why a genius scientist is a “confident criminal” is his tremendous confidence and pride in his own research. Research and theories that are incomprehensible to ordinary people are the reason why a genius scientist exists. It is because of this strong self-esteem that he is able to somehow maintain the last line as a human being, even though he is deeply hurt and far from the world. When it collapses, it means that the foundation of one’s existence collapses. That’s why mad scientists have no choice but to be happy and sad about the results of their research, sometimes radically and sometimes hysterically. But what about Dr. Shirakami? When I recalled his lines after Biollante appeared, he was strangely calm and analytical, but they were all somewhat uneasy. Ever since I first got my hands on Biollante’s tentacles,

博「自己再生能力の遺伝子を持ったゴジラ細胞で、永遠の命を持つ植物を作ったつもりだった…。」

Shiragami: “I thought I had created a plant with eternal life with Godzilla cells that have a gene for self-regeneration…”

などと言い、桐島から、
And so on, from Kirishima,

桐「つもりだった…?」
Kirishima: “Was that what you meant…?”

と突っ込まれ
I was thrust into

博「ひょっとすると大変なことになるかもしれない…!」
Shiragami: “Maybe it’s going to be a big deal…!”

なんて、情けない顔で言ってみたり、
I tried saying that with a pitiful face,

博「ゴジラの熱線を受けて、細胞分裂が異常に刺激されたかもしれない。」

Shiragami: Cell division may have been abnormally stimulated by Godzilla’s heat rays.

「兄弟などではない。文字通りの分身だ。同じ細胞で一方は動物、一方は植物･･･。」

“Not siblings. Literal doubles. Same cell, one animal, one plant…”

というように、語尾が極めて曖昧な推量形に終始しているのだ。たまに、強い断定的言い回しがあったとしても、テレビレポーター(相楽晴子)に対して、博「(語気荒く)あなた方はいつも自分達に理解出来ないという理由だけで反対するだけだ!将来のことも考えずに!」

In this way, the endings of the words end up in extremely ambiguous conjectural forms. Occasionally, even if there were strong assertive phrases, Shiragami said to a TV reporter (Haruko Sagara), “(roughly speaking) you always object only because you don’t understand them! About the future.” Don’t even think about it!”

と、一般的マスコミ批判(若干マッドサイエンティスト的な心情の吐露とも受け取れるが…)を行う位か、あるいは、抗核バクテリアの生成を巡り、慎重で論理的な意見を吐く桐島に対し、博「君にはまだ科学というものが分かっていないようだな…。」

To Kirishima, who criticizes the mass media in general (although it can be taken as a somewhat mad scientist-like expression of sentiment…), or gives a cautious and logical opinion on the generation of anti-nuclear bacteria, Shiragami: “You don’t seem to understand science yet…”

などと偉ぶるのが関の山でしかない。挙げ句の果てには、

He(?) is the only one who boasts such things. As a result,

博「あれはただの植物ではない。ビオランテだ。北欧神話に出てくる植物の精霊。あの植物には人間の心が宿っている。」

Shiragami: “That’s not just any plant. It’s Biollante. It’s a plant spirit from Norse mythology. That plant has a human heart.”

自ら得々と説明しても、その桐島から
Even if you explain yourself well, from that Kirishima

桐「植物にゴジラ細胞を融合させただけじゃない、人間の細胞まで。何て事を…それがあなたの言う科学ですかっ!」

Kirishima: “It’s not just Godzilla cells that have been fused with plants, but even human cells. What the hell…that’s what you call science!”

なんて、いとも簡単に鋭い反撃の矢を射られてしまうのだ。う~ん、どうにも様にならず、何ともハッキリしない。

How easy it is to be shot with a sharp counterattack arrow. Hmmm, it doesn’t look like anything, and it’s not clear at all.

それに比べたら、大河内財団の主であ大河内誠剛(金田龍之介)の「私は宝の持ち腐れが大嫌いだ。」とか、「原爆とゴジラに酷い目に遭わされた日本が、ゴジラを超える兵器を作っても、決して悪いとは思わんがね。」や「私達が作らなくとも、誰かがきっと同じものを作るんだ。」等の思考の方が遥かに確信犯的であり、彼こそが《マッドサイエンティスト〉と呼ぶに相応しい人物だったのかもしれない…。

Compared to that, Seigo Okochi (Ryunosuke Kaneda), the head of the Okochi Foundation, said, “I hate wasting treasures.” But I don’t think it’s bad at all.” and “Even if we don’t make it, someone will surely make it.” Perhaps he was a person worthy of being called a “mad scientist”…

ラスト近くのシーンで、白神博士の正体が見えてくる。

In the scene near the end, the true identity of Dr. Shirakami comes into view.

博「ゴジラでもビオランテでもない。本当の怪獣はそれを作った人間です。」

Shiragami: “Neither Godzilla nor Biollante. The real monster is the human who created it.”

これは紛れもない正統派科学者の台詞である正統派科学者には必ず映画の最後に、良心的で統括的な台詞が用意されている…)。しかしその後、消えていくビオランテに「英理加･･･」と呼びかけながらサラジア国のエージェントに呆気なく殺されてしまう。これは異端派科学者の典型的最後である(マッドサイエンティストは映画の最後に死ぬ運命にあるのだ……)。正統と異端の両極を孕んだこの矛盾に満ちた白神博士の最後とは、正統に異端にもなりきれず、最後までその両極を揺れ続けた科学者の哀れな最後なのである。理解に苦しむ白神博士の曖昧でスッキリしない立場の正体、それは本来二人が演ずべき両極の役を、博士一人で演じなければならなかったところにある。だから、自分で映画全体の統括的なまとめをして、その上で死ぬしかなかったのだ。従来の東宝特撮映画群の劇作法ならば、彼の死を見届けるもう一人の科学者が必要であったはずだし、あの『フランケンシュタイン対地底怪獣』のボーエン博士(ニック・アダムス)が彼の最後を見たなら、きっとこう呟くに違いない。「正統でもない、異端でもない。所詮彼は不幸な科学者だ…。」と…。

This is unmistakably the line of an orthodox scientist, an orthodox scientist who always has a conscientious and comprehensive line at the end of the film…). However, after that, while calling out to the disappearing Biollante, “Erika…”, he was killed by an agent from Saradia. This is the typical end of a maverick scientist (mad scientists are doomed to die at the end of the movie…). The end of this contradictory Dr. Shirakami, who is filled with both orthodoxy and heresy, is the pitiful end of a scientist who could not be either orthodox or heretical, and continued to sway between those polarities until the end. The true identity of Dr. Shirakami’s ambiguous and unclear position, which is difficult to understand, lies in the fact that the doctor alone had to play the two roles that should have been played by two people. So he had no choice but to make a comprehensive summary of the whole movie himself and then die. If it were the dramatization method of the conventional Toho special effects movie group, another scientist would have been necessary to see his death, and Dr. Bowen (Nick Adams) of that “Frankenstein vs. the underground monster” would have been his last. If you see this, you will surely mutter, “Neither orthodox nor heretical. After all, he is an unfortunate scientist.”

白神源壱郎博士……。彼は、東宝特撮映科学者陣の中で、最も矛盾を内包した特異の科学者であったのである。

Dr. Genichiro Shirakami… He was a peculiar scientist who contained the most contradictions among the Toho Tokusatsu film scientist.
