怪獣映画において科学者の存在は必要不可欠であり、本編ドラマの中核を担う極めて重要な役所である。それ故に、正統派の科学者と異端派の科学者(いわゆマッドサイエンティスト)を登場させそれぞれの確執・対立・葛藤を描いてみせれば、より現実味が増し、人間ドラマも深化していく。それは東宝特撮映画群の中でこれまで何度も繰り返し用いられてきた最も特徴的な劇作法の一つであり言わば十八番とも言うべき、《王道の演出》なのである。そして、その両者(正統派と異端派)の性格設定と描き分けがそれぞれキッチリ出来ている作品こそがこれまで《傑作》と呼ばれてきたのだ。

The existence of a scientist is indispensable in a monster movie, and it is an extremely important government office that plays a central role in the main drama. Therefore, if an orthodox scientist and a heretical scientist (the so-called mad scientist) appear and depict their respective feuds, confrontations, and conflicts, the reality will increase and the human drama will deepen. It is one of the most characteristic dramatization techniques that has been used repeatedly in Toho’s special effects films, and it can be said that it is the eighteenth, “directing the royal road.” And works that clearly set and draw the characters of both (orthodox and heretical) have been called ‘masterpieces.’

従って、『ゴジビオ』においてその両者の役割を担うのは、正統派が大河内財団が莫大な援助をするところの「筑波工学研究所」の《若きエース》青年科学者桐島(三田村邦彦)であり、異端派が白神博士となるべきはずであったのだ。全体的にそういう構図が出来上がっているにも拘わらず、どうにもイケナイのだ。異端的立場のはずの白神博士の言動が、何とも中途半端なのだ(言い出せばキリがないが、青年科学者桐島と白神博士の年差も対立の甘さの一因だったかも知れない…)。結局、白神博士は正統派らしいと異端派らしい面の間を揺れ動くばかで、全体のドラマの中で彼の明確なポジションが定まらないのだ。

Therefore, in “GojiBio,” it is Kirishima (Kunihiko Mitamura), a “young ace” young scientist at the “Tsukuba Engineering Research Institute,” to whom the Okochi Foundation provides enormous support. A heretic should have become Dr. Shirakami. Despite the fact that such a composition has been completed as a whole, it is somehow bad. Dr. Shirakami, who is supposed to be in a heretical position, speaks and does nothing. In the end, Dr. Shirakami vacillates between orthodox and heretical aspects, and his position in the overall drama is uncertain.

では一体、東宝十八番の異端の科学者(マッドサイエンティスト) とは、どのよ うな設定であるべきだったのだろう か…?

So, what kind of setting should Toho’s 18th mad scientist be…?

「君にはまだ科学というものが分かっていないようだな……。」
“I don’t think you understand science yet…”

4 異端派科学者の条件

4 Heretical Scientist Conditions

これまで数多くの映画の中に〈マッド サイエンティスト〉と呼ぶべき科学者達 が登場してくるが、思いつくままにそれ らの特徴的な要素を挙げてみよう。

Scientists who should be called “Mad Scientists” have appeared in numerous movies so far, but let’s list their characteristic elements as they come to mind.

(1) いわゆる《世捨て人》である。

(1) He is a so-called “hermit”.

~過去には優れた学者として輝かしい栄 光の時期があったが、現在は学会からも 相手にされず(あるいは追放され、また は自ら背を向けて…)、世間からもその存 在を殆ど忘れられていて、自らも世間と の関係を断っている。大概、地下に他人 滅多に入れない秘密の実験室か研究室 を持っていて、終日怪しげな実験と研究 に明け暮れている。いわゆる世間的日常 とは最もかけ離れ、その研究も人間性も 謎に満ちた人物として描かれる。その謎 が映画の中でいつ頃、誰によって明らか にされるのかは、大変重要なポイントで もある。

~ In the past, there was a period of glorious glory as an excellent scholar, but now he is ignored by academic societies (or expelled, or turned away from herself…) and is almost invisible to the public. Forgotten and cut himself off from the world, he usually has a secret laboratory or lab in the basement that few people can enter, and spends his days doing dubious experiments and research. He is the most distant from the so-called everyday life, and his research and humanity are portrayed as a person full of mystery. When and by whom the mystery will be revealed in the movie is a very important point for him.

(2) 極めて身体的な特徴、あるいは深い精 神的外傷(トラウマ)を有している。

~ 隻眼の芹沢博士に代表されるように、 身体的な機能の損傷とは、明らかに常人 との差異を嫌でも自覚させられるもので あり、終生消えることのないコンプレッ クスとして燻り続ける。同様に、愛する 妻や子供を一度に失ったり、異常なほど 厳格な親による幼少時の教育の反動、あ るいは早熟ゆえに周囲から受けた言われ 誹謗・中傷・謀略等、過去において 心が負わされた深い傷は、後になって心 身のバランスの崩れた状態を生み出す。

~ As exemplified by Dr. Serizawa, who has one eye, damage to physical functions is something that clearly makes us aware of the difference from ordinary people, even if we don’t like it, and it continues to smolder as a complex that will never disappear for the rest of our lives. Similarly, the loss of a beloved wife or child all at once, the repercussions of a child’s upbringing from an abnormally strict parent, or the slander and plots received from those around them because of their precocious maturity. The deep wounds inflicted later create an unbalanced state of mind and body.

「ひょっとすると大変なことになるかもしれない。」
“Maybe it’s going to be a big deal.”

が、彼らは科学の世界に埋没することで 辛うじてそれらのコンプレックスから解 き放たれ、紙一重ギリギリのバランス状 態で自己を維持しているのだ。思えば彼 らは、不幸な出来事から健全に立ち直る 機会を失ってしまう(そうして未だに立 ち直れずにいる･･･) 位、鋭敏で繊細な感 受性の持ち主でもあるのだ。

However, by immersing themselves in the world of science, they are barely freed from their complexes and maintain themselves in a state of fine balance. Come to think of it, they are also possessors of sharp and delicate sensibilities, to the point that they lose the opportunity to recover soundly from an unfortunate event (and are still unable to recover…).

(3) 彼らは天才であり、自らの科学的理論に対しては絶対的な自信を持つ。

(3) They are geniuses and have absolute confidence in their scientific theories.

~ この意味において、彼らは間違いなく 『確信犯』でなければならない。その明晰 な頭脳が生み出す様々な理論と発明は時 として《背徳の科学》とか《禁断の発 明だと排斥されるのが常である。しか し、彼らにとってそれらは科学者として 命より大事な《存在証明》なのである。 従って彼らは、例えおぞましい怪物を生 み出し、世間が「何てことを…。」と恐れ 非難しても「やはり間違っていな かった…!」と学問的正しさに狂喜し、 いとも簡単に敗れ去ろうものなら簡単に 現実を認められず「そんな馬鹿な…!」 などと、つい口走ってしまうのである。 大変大雑把ではあるが、まぁこんなとこ ろが、正しい 《マッドサイエンティス ト》の条件たるものだろうか…。

~ In this sense, they must be ‘convicted.’ The various theories and inventions produced by such a clear mind are sometimes dismissed as “immoral science” or “forbidden inventions.” However, for them, as scientists, they are “proof of existence” that is more important than their lives. Therefore, even if they created a hideous monster, and the world feared and criticized them, saying, “What the hell…?” If you’re going to lose, you won’t be able to accept reality easily, and you’ll end up blurting things like “That’s stupid…!” It’s very rough, but I wonder if this is the right condition for being a “Mad Scientist”…

5 白神博士の正体

5 The True Identity of Dr. Shirakami

ではそれらの条件を基に、改めて問題 の科学者白神博士を振り返ってみよう。

Based on those conditions, let’s look back at the scientist in question, Dr. Shirakami.

まず、(1)の条件。彼は《世捨て人〉で あったのだろうか…?愛する娘英理加を 失ってから5年、彼は『白神新植物研究 所」で確かに《世捨て人》状態でひっそ と暮らしながら、薔薇の細胞に愛する 娘の細胞を融合させるという恐ろしい実験をしていた。

First, condition (1). Was he a “hermit” and what he had…? Five years after losing his beloved daughter Erika, he quietly lives in a “hermit” state at the Shirakami New Botanical Research Institute, where he was conducting a terrifying experiment by fusing his beloved daughter’s cells with his daughter’s cells.

「科学など、所詮政治の道具でしかないのだ。」

“Science is nothing more than a political tool.”

しかし、娘の親友が訪ねてくるといとも簡単に会い、しかも初対 面の超能力少女に平気で薔薇を観察させ 何と和やかな歓談までして別れたりして いる。そんな対応ぶりは、秘密の実験を 見せた後の動揺する元婚約者を気づかう よりも、すぐに実験室に鍵をかけ、その 上に「あなただから見せたんだ。 それを 忘れないで。」(これは《世捨て人》 芹沢 博士の精一杯の愛の告白でもあるのだ が…)と念を押す芹沢博士のそれとは大 違いで、何とも良識的善人科学者の姿で ある。

However, when his daughter’s best friend comes to visit, he meet her very easily, and even let the girl with supernatural powers who he met for the first time calmly observe the roses, and even have a pleasant chat before parting. Rather than worrying about his upset ex-fiancée after showing him the secret experiment, he quickly locked the lab and wrote, “You’re the reason I showed you. Don’t forget it.” This is also Dr. Serizawa’s confession of love to the best of his ability, but…).

更に、白神博士は事が起きるやマスコ ミの取材に対し怒りを露にしたり(芹沢 博士なら多分相手にもしない。例え相手 にしてもそっけなくあしらうはず。)、作 戦本部にまで顔を連ねてビオランテの分 析をしてしまうあたりの常識的な協調性 は、当たり前の科学者過ぎるではないか。 とても世捨て人〉とは思えぬ行動パ ターンである。せめて、一人薄暗い部屋 でテレビを見ながら「英理加…!」など と呻きつつ、最後には「ああ、私の英理 加が、ビオランテが…!」と頭を掻き毟 り、制止を振り切って自衛隊の攻撃を阻 止せんとする〈世捨て人》の気概と執念 を見せて欲しかった。その姿こそが、本 来の白神博士のあるべき姿だったように 思うのだが・・・。

In addition, Dr. Shirakami expresses his anger at media coverage when things happen (Dr. Serizawa would probably not deal with it. Even if it’s your opponent, you should treat it curtly. ), and the common-sense cooperativeness in the area of analyzing Biollante even at the operation headquarters is too much of a natural scientist, isn’t it? It’s his turn to act like a recluse. At the very least, while watching TV alone in a dimly lit room, he groaned, “Erika…!” I wanted him to show me the recluse’s mettle and tenacity in trying to stop the attack. I think that figure is exactly what Dr. Shirakami should have been, but…

そして(2)の条件。彼には特に身体的な 機能の損傷はない(台詞が聞き取りづらいのは、口をあまり大きく開けないので 声が口腔内で籠もってしまうからだろう…)。とすれば、精神的外傷面だが、本人も「だから、私達も外国に出て研究しなければならなかった。」なければならなかった。」と言っているように、頭脳流出組で流暢な(?)英語を操る超エリートだから、順風満帆な人生だったに違いない。

And condition (2). He doesn’t have any physical damage (the reason why it’s hard to hear his lines is probably because he doesn’t open his mouth too wide, so his voice gets muffled in his mouth…). If so, in terms of mental trauma, he himself had to say, “That’s why we had to go abroad and do research.” As he says, he must have been a smooth sailing life because he is a brain drain group and a super elite who can handle fluent (?) English.
