昭和14年になって、特殊技術課のとなりの部屋に、うしおそうじ(本名・鷺巣富雄)が入社し、こっそり円谷のオプチカルプリンター開発の助手をつとめた。

In 1939, Soji Ushio (real name: Tomio Sagisu) joined the room next to the Special Technology Section and secretly worked as an assistant in the development of optical printers for Tsuburaya.

翌年の昭和15年5月、『海軍爆撃隊』(木村荘十二監督)の特撮が大評判となり、さらに9月の『燃ゆる大空』(阿部豊監督)でも特撮を担当、「日本カメラマン協会特殊技術賞」を受賞する。

In May 1940, the special effects of “Naval Bombing Corps” (directed by Souji Kimura) became very popular and received the Special Technology Award.

そして昭和17年の『ハワイ・マレー沖海戦』(山本嘉次郎監督)の特撮は、戦後、日本を占領したGHQ (連合国軍最高司令官総司令部)の幹部が、「これはどう見ても実写である。」とカンちがいし、実戦おこうげきしんじゅの記録フィルムとして差し押さえたほどのできばえだった。円谷は、ゼロ戦が攻撃するハワイの真珠わん湾のセットを、1枚の新聞写真からサイズを割り出して作ったという。

And in the special effects of “The Battle of Hawaii and Malaya” (directed by Kajiro Yamamoto) in 1942, the executives of GHQ (General Headquarters, Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers), who occupied Japan after the war, said, “No matter how you look at it, it’s a live-action film.” It was so successful that it was confiscated as a record film of an actual battle. Tsuburaya is said to have created a set of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where the Zero fighters would attack, by calculating the size from a single newspaper photograph.

またこの年、国産初のオプチカルプリンターを完成させ、ようやく「特撮の円谷」の実力を、多くの者が認めるようになるのである。

Also in this year, he completed the first domestically produced optical printer, and many people finally recognized the ability of “Tsukutsu of Tsuburaya.”

昭和25(1954)年の春だった。

It was the spring of 1954.

「円谷さん、ちょっと相談があります。」

“Mr. Tsuburaya, I have a question for you.”

田中友幸は円谷英二より9歳年下だ。円谷の特殊技術の力量は、田中も十分に認めていた。

Tomoyuki Tanaka is nine years younger than Eiji Tsuburaya. Tanaka fully acknowledged the competence of Tsuburaya’s special technology.

「円谷さん、今度特撮がメインの怪獣映画を撮ります。そこでぜひとも、あなたの力を借りたいと思っています。」

“Mr. Tsuburaya, I’m going to shoot a monster movie with special effects as the main feature. I’d really like to ask for your help.”

「特撮がメインの映画? そんなものが企画を通ったのか。どんな内容なんだい?」

“Movies with special effects as the main feature? Did something like that go as planned? What kind of content?”

田中は会議に提出した企画を、一気にはき出した。それを聞きながら、円谷は心の中でこんなことをつぶやいた。

Tanaka threw out the plan he submitted to the meeting at once. While listening to this, Tsuburaya muttered something like this in his mind.

「そんな企画が通るなら、おれの企画も提出しておけばよかった。」くや悔しさと期待とがごっちゃになった。いずれにしても、自分が長い間大切にあたためてきた夢が、実現に一歩近づいたことはまちがいない。「渡りに船」といってもいいだろう。それに田中とは、これまでに何度もいっしょに仕事をし、気心の知れた仲だった。

円谷は田中に手を差し出した。その手をにぎり返す田中。その手からほとばしる情熱に、円谷の悔しさはすっかり消えていた。

Tsuburaya held out his hand to Tanaka. Tanaka grabbed his hand. Tsuburaya’s frustration was completely erased by the passion that gushed out from his hands.
