About Odo Island

百万年前にまれに生息したと推測される海棲爬虫類から陸上獣類への進化途上の生物で、ジュラ紀から白亜紀に栄えたらしい。その一部は大戸島近海に生き永らえていたらしく、古来、島では伝説の怪物、ゴジラとして恐れられていた。度重なる水爆実験で、その生活環境を破壊されて東京に上陸することになる。

It is an evolving creature from a marine reptile to land beast, which is presumed to have lived a million years ago, and has flourished from the Jurassic to Cretaceic. Some of them seemed to have lived in the waters near Odo Island, and have been afraid of the legendary monster, Godzilla on the island. In a repeated hydrogen bomb experiment, the living environment was destroyed and it will landed in Tokyo.

栄光丸と備後丸が遭難した海域に近い太平洋の孤島で、古来、しけが続く時には「あまっこをゴジラのエジキ」にしていたという。劇中では房総半島の沖が示されているが、実際には事故現場の北緯24度東経141度2分は小笠原諸島付近。劇中では、おおどしま、おおとじまの両方で呼称される。

It is a solitary island in the Pacific Ocean near the waters where Eikomaru and Bingo Maru were shipwrecked, and when in the old days when there were poor fishing, it was said the amago were “prey of Godzilla.” In the film, the coast of the Boso Peninsula is shown, but in fact, the 141 degree east of the accident site is near the Ogasawara Islands. In the film, it is called both Odoshima and Otojima.
