ゴジラシリーズ史上、ゴジラと最も多くの激闘を繰り広げてきたライバル怪獣・キングギドラ。ゴジラが地球の怪獣王ならキングギドラは宇宙の怪獣王である。三つの首と大きな翼、そして全身金色の鱗で覆われた姿が印象的な怪獣のキングはどのようにして生まれたのか。また、1964年の初登場から2019年の『ゴジラキング・オブ・モンスターズ』までの5年の間、どのような活躍を見せ続けたのか考察してみよう。

King Ghidorah, a rival monster that has fought the most fierce battles with Godzilla in the history of the Godzilla series. If Godzilla is the King of Monsters on Earth, King Ghidorah is the King of Monsters in Space. How was the monster king with three necks, large wings, and a body covered in golden scales born? Also, let’s consider how he continued to show success during the five years from his first appearance in 1964 to 2019’s “Godzilla King of Monsters.”

キングギドラがスクリーンに登場したのは1964年。東京オリンピックが開催され、日本は高度経済成長期の真っ只中にあった。この頃の日本映画界は、台頭してきたテレビ人気の影響で、観客動員数が減少傾向にあった。より多くの人々の足を再び映画館に向けさせるためには、ファミリー層の開拓が急務だった。そこで東宝は、ファミリー層向け映画の代表格であるゴジラシリーズをテコ入れする方針を進める。すなわち、『キングコング対ゴジラ』や『モスラ対ゴジラ』のような「怪獣プロレス」路線の確立である。この路線を強化するために、ゴジラに対抗できる新しい人気怪獣を登場させる必要に迫られたのだ。

King Ghidorah first appeared on screen in 1964. The Tokyo Olympics were held, and Japan was in the midst of a period of high economic growth. At this time, the number of moviegoers in the Japanese film industry was on the decline due to the rising popularity of television. In order to get more people to visit movie theaters again, it was an urgent task to develop a family segment. Therefore, Toho is proceeding with a policy of leveraging the Godzilla series, which is a representative of family-oriented movies. In other words, it is the establishment of the “Monster Pro Wrestling” route such as “King Kong vs. Godzilla” and “Mothra vs. Godzilla.” In order to strengthen this line, it was necessary to introduce a new popular monster that could compete with Godzilla.

キングギドラの造形のイメージは、日本の神話に登場する八つ首の大蛇・ヤマタノオロチに由来している。ヤマタノオロチは、ゴジラシリーズの円谷英二が特技監督を務めた59年の東宝映画『日本誕生』に登場し、三船敏郎扮するスサノオノミコトと対戦している。

The image of King Ghidorah is derived from Yamata no Orochi, a giant eight-headed serpent that appears in Japanese mythology. Yamata no Orochi appears in the 1959 Toho movie “Nippon Birth,” directed by Eiji Tsuburaya of the Godzilla series, and plays against Susanoo no Mikoto played by Toshiro Mifune.

また、ロシアの神話に伝承されている三つ首のドラゴン「ズメイ」もキングギドラのモデルになったと言われている。ズメイが登場する56年のソ連映画「豪勇イリヤ巨竜と魔王征服』が59年に日本で公開された時には、「キング・ドラゴン」と紹介された。なお、キングギドラの名前の由来は、ギリシャ神話に登場する蛇状の怪物「Hydra(ヒュドラ)」をローマ字読みにし、怪獣の名前には「ガ」行を入れるという暗黙のルールから「ギドラ」になったと言われている。

King Ghidorah is also said to have been modeled after the three-headed dragon “Zumei” from Russian mythology. When Zumei’s 1956 Soviet film “Goyuu Ilya Kyouryu to Maou Conquest” was released in Japan in 1959, he was introduced as “King Dragon.” In addition, the origin of the name of King Ghidorah is the romanization of the snake-like monster “Hydra” that appears in Greek mythology. It is said that the name “Ghidorah” came from an unspoken rule that the monster’s name should include the “ga” line.

こうしてキングギドラは、ゴジラシリーズ第5弾となる「三大怪獣地球最大の決戦』で初めてスクリーンに登場。その姿を現すとあまりの迫力に観客は衝撃を受けた。そしてゴジラ、ラドン、モスラという人気怪獣を一度に向こうに回しても劣らぬ強さは、怪獣ファンを一挙に魅了した。

In this way, King Ghidorah appeared on the screen for the first time in the fifth installment of the Godzilla series, “Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster.” When he appeared, the audience was shocked by its power. Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra were also popular. The strength that is not inferior even if you turn the monster over at once fascinates the monster fans at once.

神性を持つ数少ない怪獣
A rare monster with divinity

キングギドラが日本のみならず、世界の怪獣ファンたちに人気が高い理由は、その「神性」にあるのかもしれない。ゴジラシリーズに数多の怪獣が登場したが、「神性」を感じさせる怪獣はゴジラとキングギドラだけである。両者とも映画の中では災厄をもたらす象徴として描かれるが、ゴジラには地球上の自然の意志を感じ、キングギドラは、「宇宙超怪獣」らしく宇宙の意志を感じさせる。彼らが誕生した戦後日本は、経済的利益を追求するあまり、地球上の自然や環境の破壊に突き進んだ。それだけでは飽き足らず、人類は宇宙への覇権まで目指すようになり、こうした増長する人類の欲望に鉄槌を下すべく、ゴジラは地上の破壊神として、キングギドラは宇宙の破壊神として現れたのだ。キングギドラの全身は金色の鱗で覆われており、水爆にも耐えられるほどの耐性があるという設定は、ビキニ環礁の原爆実験で拡散した放射能を浴びて変貌した、というゴジラの設定と呼応するものだ。ゴジラが人間の味方という設定に変わってしまったため、最初のゴジラの破壊神的役割をキングギドラが担うことになったと考えてもいいだろう。つまり、この両者の存在そのものが、人類に対する警告なのだ。

The reason why King Ghidorah is popular not only in Japan but also among monster fans around the world may be its “divinity.” Many monsters have appeared in the Godzilla series, but only Godzilla and King Ghidorah feel “divinity.” Both are portrayed as symbols of disaster in movies, but Godzilla feels the will of nature on the earth, and King Ghidorah feels the will of the universe like a “space super monster.” In post-war Japan, where they were born, the pursuit of economic profit led to the destruction of nature and the environment on earth. Not satisfied with that alone, mankind began to aim for supremacy in the universe, and in order to put a hammer on these growing desires of mankind, Godzilla appeared as the God of Destruction on Earth, and King Ghidorah appeared as the God of Destruction in Space. King Ghidorah’s whole body is covered with golden scales, and the setting that it is resistant enough to withstand a hydrogen bomb corresponds to the setting of Godzilla, which is transformed by the radiation spread by the atomic bomb test of Bikini Atoll. Since Godzilla has changed to the setting of being an ally of humans, it can be considered that King Ghidorah has taken on the role of the god of destruction of the first Godzilla. In other words, the very existence of these two is a warning to mankind.

キングギドラが2度目にスクリーンに現れた65年の「怪獣大戦争』では、地球侵略を企むX星人に操られているという設定だったが、これは当時が東西冷戦の真っ最中だったという時代背景と無関係ではあるまい。得体の知れぬ宇宙人や宇宙怪獣からの侵略を、未知のベールに包まれた共産主義の脅威とダブらせていたのである。東西冷戦期に日本が実際に戦火に包まれることはなかったが、映画の中ではキングギドラが破壊の限りを尽くした。その意味では、自然災害の象徴であったゴジラに対して、キングギドラは戦争の象徴であり、東西冷戦時代に相応しい緊張感を持った怪獣であったと言えよう。また、「もしキングギドラが侵略兵器として使用されたら?」という恐怖を観る者に与えようとする製作者側の意図も感じられた。

The invasion from mysterious aliens and space monsters was combined with the unknown threat of communism wrapped in a veil. In that sense, King Ghidorah is a symbol of war against Godzilla, who was a symbol of natural disasters, and a tension appropriate for the Cold War era. It can be said that it was a monster with a sense of emotion. In addition, I could feel the intention of the creator to give the viewers the fear of “What if King Ghidorah was used as an invasion weapon?”

初登場となった『三大怪獣地球最大の決戦』のキングギドラは、その目的もわからないまま、ただ傍若無人に自分の意志で意志ではなく本能で?)破壊活動を行ったが、次に登場した『怪獣大戦争』ではX星人の傀儡となった。そして次の『怪獣総進撃』ではキラアク星人の「切り札」としてラスト13分前に唐突に登場し、ゴジラ率いる10体の怪獣軍団に袋叩きにされ、わずか6分で完敗。3度目の登場にしてついに絶命する。その後、昭和ゴジラシリーズ最後の登場となった『地球攻撃命令ゴジラ対ガイガン』だったが、新怪獣ガイガンとタッグを組むも主役を奪われ、『地球最大の決戦』の頃の破壊神としての威厳を失うことになる。以降、キングギドラは平成ゴジラシリーズでゴジラが復活するまで、スクリーンから遠ざかることになる。

He finally dies on his third appearance. After that, it was the last appearance of the Showa Godzilla series, “Godzilla vs. Gigan”, but even though he teamed up with the new monster Gigan, he was deprived of the leading role, and he became a dignified god of destruction around the time of “Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster.” He will lose. After that, King Ghidorah will stay away from the screen until Godzilla revives in the Heisei Godzilla series.

変貌を遂げるキングギドラついに世界進出

昭和から平成に時代が変わって3年目、ついに破壊神は復活した。『ゴジラVSキングギドラ』である。当初の企画では、モスラを主役にフィーチャーし、中国の伝説に登場する魔神「バガン」と対決するという物語が検討されていたが、結局「人気怪獣を出した方が賢明」という判断で、ゴジラ最大のライバル・キングギドラを登場させることになったのである。この作品でのキングギドラは、宇宙からの侵略怪獣ではなく、日本の国力を消耗させるため、未来人が誕生させた怪獣という設定だった。またゴジラに敗れた後にサイボーグ怪獣へと改造され、意外な形での対決となった。なお、歴代キングギドラの中で、ゴジラと一騎打ちを行ったのはこの作品だけである。

Three years after the era changed from Showa to Heisei, the God of Destruction was finally revived. It’s “Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.” In the initial plan, we considered a story featuring Mothra as the main character and confronting the demon god “Bagan” that appears in Chinese legend, but in the end it was decided that it would be wiser to put out a popular monster, so Godzilla was decided to make the biggest rival King Ghidorah appear. King Ghidorah in this work was not an invading monster from outer space, but a monster created by future people in order to drain Japan’s national power. Also, after being defeated by Godzilla, he was remodeled into a cyborg monster, and the confrontation took an unexpected form. It should be noted that this work is the only one that Godzilla fought successive King Ghidorahs.

平成の時代でも人気が揺るがないキングギドラは、東宝がゴジラに次ぐヒットシリーズを狙ったモスラシリーズでも相手役を務めた。96年の「モスラ』でデスギドラという亜種が登場したのに続き、「モスラ3キングギドラ来襲』では、本家キングギドラがモスラの敵として立ちはだかった。この作品でのキングギドラは、誘導テレポート能力やマインドコントロール能力を備えるなど、侵略怪獣としてパワーアップ。歴代キングギドラの中でも最も知能が高く、技も豊富だった。続く『ゴジラモスラキングギドラ大怪獣総攻撃』のキングギドラは、歴代でも異質な立ち位置であると言える。大和の守り神である護国聖獣の天の神・魏怒羅である「千年竜王」として登場。その姿は神性を帯び、まさしく黄金色に輝く美しき聖獣であった。そして5年に出現した破壊神ゴジラが再来するも、バラゴン、モスラと共に命を賭して日本を守り、ゴジラに勝利したのだった。(※実際は引き分けかもしれないが、不敗のゴジラを倒したことは勝利に値する)

King Ghidorah, who remains popular even in the Heisei era, also served as a partner in the Mothra series, which Toho aimed to become a hit series after Godzilla. Following the emergence of a subspecies called DesGidora in “Mothra” in 1996, in “Mothra 3 Attack on King Ghidorah,” the original King Ghidorah stood in the way as Mothra’s enemy. In this work, King Ghidorah has the ability to guide teleportation and mind control. He is powered up as an aggressor monster, such as having these abilities. It was the most intelligent of all King Ghidorah in history, and had a wide variety of techniques. King Ghidorah in the subsequent “Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All-Out Attack” can be said to have a different standing position even in history. Appeared as the “Millennium Dragon King,” the god of heaven, Wei Rao, the guardian deity of Yamato and the sacred beast that protects the country. Its appearance was tinged with divinity, and it was truly a beautiful holy beast that shone golden. And even though Godzilla, the god of destruction that appeared in 2005, reappeared, he risked his life with Baragon and Mothra to protect Japan and defeat Godzilla. *It may actually be a draw, but defeating the undefeated Godzilla deserves a victory.

そしてハリウッド版第2弾となる『ゴジラキング・オブ・モンスターズ』で、キングギドラはついに世界進出を果たした。太古の昔に宇宙から飛来し、地球を滅ぼそうとするなど、原点である宇宙怪獣の設定に立ち返り、「モンスター･ゼロ」という『怪獣大戦争』での呼び名や、『モスラ3』での特殊能力、『ゴジラモスラキングギドラ大怪獣総攻撃』の氷穴ではないが、南極の氷からの出現など、日本作品である過去のゴジラシリーズへのリスペクトも感じられる内容だった。西洋とも東洋とも思える優れたデザイン。ハリウッドの最新のCGによって姿も新たに甦ったキングギドラは、初めて見る世界の観客たちにどのような印象を与えたのだろうか。彼らにとってキングギドラは過去の怪獣ではなく、最新のモンスターである。ゴジラと並ぶ怪獣として改めて世界に認知されることになったキングギドラ。今後どのような展開を見せるのか、期待せずにはいられない。

And with the second Hollywood version, “Godzilla King of Monsters,” King Ghidorah finally made it into the world. Returning to the origin of space monsters, such as flying from space in ancient times and trying to destroy the earth, the name “Monster Zero” in “Monster War” and special abilities in “Mothra 3.” It was not the ice cave of “Godzilla Mothra King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All-Out Attack,” but it was content that showed respect for past Japanese works such as the appearance from the ice of Antarctica. An excellent design that can be considered both Western and Eastern. What kind of impression did King Ghidorah, whose appearance has been revived by Hollywood’s latest CG, made on audiences around the world who saw it for the first time? For them, King Ghidorah is not a monster of the past, but the latest monster. King Ghidorah, which was once again recognized by the world as a monster along with Godzilla. I can’t help but expect what kind of development will be shown in the future.
