谷英二没後、新たな 円 体制でつくられたゴジラである。今回の作品は「公害」というテーマを明確にしている点が特徴だ。時代のテーマを色濃く反映させた作品は、実に初代ゴジラ以来といってもいいかもしれない。ヘドラというキャラクターが示す公害の表現は、子供が見る作品にしてはかなり強烈であり残酷である。ヘドラに触れたり、ヘドラが噴出する毒性のスモッグを吸入すると、人体は溶解し白骨化してしまう。ゴジラも同様で、ヘドラの毒の弾丸で左目を 失い、ヘドラに差し込んだ左手が白骨化してしまうという、かつて無い苦戦を強いられる。やがて、かろうじて勝利したゴジラが人類に対し怒りの形相を見せる。ゴジラが戦ったのはヘドラではなく、人類だったのだと思わされる印象的なシーンだ。この作品のラストは、新たなへドラの誕生を予感させ終わるのが恐ろしい。

After the death of Eiji Tsuburaya, Godzilla was created under a new circle system. This work is characterized by a clear theme of “pollution.” A work that strongly reflects the theme of the era may be said to be the first Godzilla. The depiction of pollution shown by the character Hedorah is quite intense and cruel for a child’s work. If you touch Hedorah or inhale the toxic smog that it spews out, your body will melt and turn into a skeleton. The same is true for Godzilla, losing his left eye to Hedorah’s poisonous bullet, and having his left hand inserted into Hedorah turn into a skeleton, forcing him to face an unprecedented struggle. Eventually, Godzilla, who barely won, shows his anger toward humanity. It’s an impressive scene that makes you think Godzilla fought against Hedorah, not against humans. The last of this work is terrifying to end with a premonition of the birth of a new Hedorah.
