Yamazaki on his Godzilla design

「僕の考えるゴジラの最適解〟が今回のゴジラです。当初はもっとグロテスクな、水爆のダメージが露骨に残っているゴジラなど大量のデザインを出したのですが、『ゴジラ・ザ・ライド』のゴジラが気に入っていたこともあり、こっちの方向性で行こうと決めました。ハリウッド産ゴジラも含む歴代ゴジラのどれにも似ておらず、逆を言えばあらゆるゴジラのイメージを含んだ、何者でもない『うちの子』が誕生したなと自負しています。

“This Godzilla is what I think is the best solution for Godzilla.” Initially, we came up with a large number of designs that were more grotesque, such as Godzilla with obvious hydrogen bomb damage, but we liked the Godzilla from Godzilla the Ride, so we decided to go in this direction. I decided to do this. I am proud that “my child” was born, which does not resemble any of the Godzillas of the past, including Hollywood Godzilla, and on the other hand, contains images of all Godzillas.

「ゴジラと敵怪獣がぶつかり合う『対戦もの』なんて、やってみたいですね。でも怪獣が増えれば増えるほど、ドラマが作りにくいんですよ。ゴジラ対人間、そしてもう一体の怪獣が三つどもえの戦いを繰り広げながら、ちゃんと人間たちのドラマが成立する。そんな映画を作るのも、1つの『夢』として持っています!」

“I’d like to do a ‘battle’ where Godzilla and an enemy monster collide. But the more monsters there are, the harder it is to create a drama. As Godzilla fights against humans and another monster, a drama between humans is created. Making a movie like that is one of my dreams!”
