「ようい、スタート!」

“Yoi, start!”

のっしのっしと、手塚のゴジラが歩く。順調だ。そして議事堂の目の前まで来た。

Tezuka’s Godzilla walks slowly. It’s going well. Then they arrived in front of the parliament building.

「そこだ。ガツーンと…あれ?」

“There it is. With a bang… what?”

みんなの全身から力が抜けた。こわれるはずの議事堂の壁は少しもこわれずに、パタンと板のようかに倒れてしまったのだ。今度は着ぐるみの改良のおかげもあって、手塚の演技に問題はなかった。しかし、今回もNGになってしまったのだ。

The strength left everyone’s whole body. The walls of the Capitol, which were supposed to be broken, did not break at all, but instead fell down like a board. This time, thanks in part to the improved costume, Tezuka’s performance was fine. However, this time too, it was rejected.

「何だよ、今の。」

“What is it now?”

ため息まじりの声が、あたりにむなしくひびく。破壊されるミニチュアの作り方はむずかしい。こびみょうわすためのノコの入れ方が微妙なのだ。ノコを入れすぎれば不自然なこわれ方になってしまう。入れ方が足りなければ、今度はこわれてくれない。ゴジラがこわそうとしているのに、そのビルが堂々と建っているのでは、シャレにならない。

A voice mixed with a sigh echoes hollowly all around. It’s difficult to make miniatures that can be destroyed. The way the saw is inserted to reveal the details is tricky. If you saw too much, it will break in an unnatural way. If you don’t put it in enough, it won’t break this time. It would be no joke to see a building standing tall even though Godzilla is trying to destroy it.

「まったくこの仕事は、何が起こるかわからんな。」

“You never know what’s going to happen in this job.”

スタッフのだれもが、疲れた顔で頭をゴリゴリとかいた。

All the staff scratched their heads with tired faces.

「だめだ。作り直し。」

“No. Remake.”

åため息がもれる。けれど、がっかりしている暇はない。すぐさま、3度目の国会議事堂制作に取りかからなくてはならなかった。

They can’t help but sigh. But there’s no time to be disappointed. They had to immediately begin work on the third Diet Building.

この国会議事堂のセットを作り直すのと並行して、銀座のセット作りも進められた。時間的な余裕はない。

In parallel with the rebuilding of the National Diet Building set, the Ginza set was also being created. They don’t have the luxury of time.

いろいろなことを並行して進めなくては、とても間に合わない。徹夜の連続で、作業が進む。ぎんざ銀座4丁目のセットを見つめていた円谷が、ふっと口にした。

If we don’t do many things in parallel, we won’t be able to make it in time. Work continues through the night. Tsuburaya, who was staring at the Ginza 4-chome set, suddenly spoke.

「おい、そこのネオン看板、位置がちがってるぞ。ちゃんと商品名が見えるように直して。」

“Hey, that neon sign over there is in the wrong position. Please fix it so I can see the product name properly.”

協賛会社への気配りもあるが、「特撮にうそがあってはいけない。」とは、円谷がよく口にした言葉とくさつえいがだ。例えば、銀座をよく知っている人がその映画を見て、まるでちがうビルの建ち方をしていたら、それだけでその人は、いいかげんな映画と思ってしまうかもしれない。鉄道会社につとめている人が適当に作った電車のミニチュアを見たら、その場で帰ってしまうかもしれない。ミニチュアも真剣勝負なのだ。

Although consideration is given to the sponsoring companies, Tsuburaya often said, “There should be no lies in special effects.” For example, if someone who is familiar with Ginza sees a movie and sees the buildings are built in a totally different way, that person might think it’s a shoddy movie. If you saw a miniature train made by someone working for a railway company, you might just go home right away. Miniatures are also a serious challenge.

この銀座の破壊シーンには、こんな裏話がある。

There is a story behind this Ginza destruction scene.

円谷はある日、東京ロケのプランを練るため、銀座のデパートの屋上で、スタッフと打ち合わせをしていた。

One day, Tsuburaya was having a meeting with his staff on the rooftop of a department store in Ginza to plan a Tokyo location shoot.

「こっちに火をつけ、あちらへ燃え広がらせよう。」

“Let’s light a fire here and let it spread over there.”

「そうすれば、このあたり一面を火の海にできますね。」

“If we do that, we can turn this entire area into a sea of fire.”

すると、この打ち合わせを聞いていた人が、おどろいて警察へ通報した。

Then, a person who was listening to this meeting became frightened and reported it to the police.

「おい、君たち。なんの相談をしていたんだ。」

“Hey, guys. What were you discussing?”

かけつけた警察官が、スタッフにつめよる。

Police officers rushed to the scene and confronted the staff.

「いや、これはその……。」

“No, this is…”

自分たちが東宝の社員であることを明かし、事情を説明する。

They reveal that they are Toho employees and explain the situation.
