名シーンを精密再現するゴジラ模型の原型師、酒井ゆうじの天才的な造形は、子どもの頃からの憧れと情熱からの憧れと情熱から生まれたものだった。

The genius modeling of Yuji Sakai, the sculptor of the Godzilla model that precisely reproduces the famous scene, was born from the admiration and passion from childhood.

円谷英二生誕の地でもある福島県須賀川。閑静な住宅街にあるアトリエで、酒井ゆうじさんは、いまにも動き出しそうなゴジラの群れに囲まれて、我々を温かく迎えてくれた。

Sukagawa in Fukushima Prefecture is also the birthplace of Eiji Tsuburaya. At his atelier in a quiet residential area, Mr. Yuji Sakai warmly welcomed us surrounded by a group of Godzillas that seemed to move at any moment.

「小学校の頃、映画館で映画「三大怪獣地球最大の決戦」を観て、もの凄い感銘を受けた。それが、すべての始まりなんです」

“When I was in elementary school, I saw the movie ‘Three Great Monsters on Earth’s Greatest Battle’ at a movie theater and was very impressed. That’s where it all began.”

酒井さんは、自主制作模型ガレージキットや、マスプロダクト玩具のもととなる原型をつくるプロで、造形物の90%以上がゴジラというエキスパート。これまでに150種以上もの原型制作した躍動感あふれるゴジラ型によって、「酒井ゆうじ」の名は、海外にも知れ渡る一流ブランドだ。

Mr. Sakai is a professional who creates prototypes for independent model garage kits and mass-produced toys, and an expert whose 90% or more of the objects are Godzilla. The name of “Yuji Sakai” is a first-class brand that is known overseas due to the lively Godzilla model that has created more than 150 prototypes so far.

脱サラをするほど、ゴジラを愛していた。

I loved Godzilla so much that I quit my job.

美大の学生だった酒井さんは、リバイバル上映で観たゴジラ映画で昔の感を思い出して、オリジナルの造形作品を趣味でつくり始めた。卒業後は故郷に戻り、地元の広告代理店に就職しサラリーマン生活を送るようになる。1989年、ガレージキットメーカーの老舗、海洋堂主催のコンテストに何気なく出品したゴジラ模型が認められ、プロデビューを果たす。

Mr. Sakai, who was a student at an art university, remembered the feeling of the old days when he saw a Godzilla movie at a revival screening, and started making original sculptures as a hobby. After graduating, he returned to his hometown, got a job at a local advertising agency, and started living as an office worker. In 1989, he made his professional debut after casually submitting a Godzilla model to a contest sponsored by Kaiyodo, a long-established garage kit maker.

「しばらくは原型師とサラリーマンの二足のワラジを履いていたのですが、ある時、画家の絵の展示という仕事をやっていて、ふと思ったのです。他人の展示じゃなくて、自分の作品を飾るべきなんじゃないかって。13年間勤め広告代理店を辞めて、35歳で専業の原型師になりました」

“For a while, I was wearing both the sculptor’s and the office worker’s shoes, but one day, when I was working on an exhibition of a painter’s paintings, I suddenly had this idea. After 13 years of working at an advertising agency, I became a full-time sculptor at the age of 35.”

安定した地位も収入も、ゴジラの白熱光のような情熱からは逃れることができなかった。「ゴジラデストロイア」造形スタッフなど、映画の製作にも携わって活躍するが、あくまで原型師のスタンスだけは崩さない。

Neither stable position nor income could escape Godzilla’s incandescent passion. He is also active in the production of movies such as “Godzilla Destoroyah” modeling staff, but he does not break his stance as a prototype teacher.

「私は、映画のシーンを再現したい、というのがモチベーションなんです。ゴジラにこだわるのも、小学生の時と同で、理屈抜きにカッコいいから。「モスラ対ゴジラ」の出現のシーンなんか、何度観てもしびれちゃう(笑)」

“My motivation is that I want to recreate the scenes from the movie. I am particular about Godzilla, just like when I was in elementary school, because it is unreasonably cool. No matter how many times I watch the scene where “Mothra vs. Godzilla” appears, I get numb (laughs).

ひとつの作品にかける期間は、1~3カ月。完成させるためには映像だけでなく、児童雑誌などを含めた、あらゆる媒体に発表された大量の写真資料を集め、それを身体のヒダの1本まで忠実に表現する。頭のトサカの高さが数変わっただけで「そのゴジラではなくなってしまう」のだと言う。

It takes 1 to 3 months for one piece. In order to complete the work, not only video but also a large amount of photographic materials published in various media, including children’s magazines, are collected and faithfully expressed down to the folds of the body. He says that just by changing the height of the crest on his head, “Godzilla will no longer be that Godzilla.”

「いろんなゴジラをつくりましたけ制作済みのシーンをつくり直したいなど、やりたいことはまだまだあります。これからもブレずにゴジラ一筋でつくり続けていくのでしょうね」

“There are still many things I want to do, such as making various Godzillas and recreating scenes that have already been produced. From now on, I’m sure they’ll continue to make Godzilla single-mindedly without wavering.”

まさにゴジラの職人。酒井さんのゴジラがもつオーラは、人生をかけた情熱と迫力が感じられる。
