Godzilla and Music

映画『ゴジラ』にとって、もうひとり欠くことのできない人物がいる。伊福部昭だ。

There is another person who is indispensable to the movie “Godzilla.” This is Akira Ifukube.

昭和23(1948)年のことだった。伊福部昭が映画の仕事で京都に滞在していたとき、撮影所近くの小料理屋で、月形竜之介とこたつで酒を飲んでいた。月形竜之介は、当時の時代劇のスターで、彼を知らない日本人はいないといわれるほどの俳優である。

It was in 1948 (Showa 23). When Akira Ifukube was in Kyoto working on a movie, he was drinking at a kotatsu [wooden table covered by a futon] with Ryunosuke Tsukigata at a small restaurant near the filming location. Ryunosuke Tsukigata was a star of historical dramas at the time, and it is said that there is no Japanese person who does not know him.

「今日の立ちまわりには、どんな音楽をつけてくれるんだい?」

“What kind of music are you going to play for today’s fight?”

伊福部は音楽家である。特に映画音楽を手がけることが多く、それまでにも数々の映画に音楽をつけていた。

Ifukube is a musician. He was particularly involved in composing film music, and had previously composed music for a number of films.

「そりゃあ、フィルムを見てからさ。現場で直接見るイメージと、フィルムになってからのイメージはまた別物だからね。」

“Well, after seeing the film. The image you get when you see it directly on set and the image you get after it’s made into film are two completely different things.”

と、こんな会話をしていると、ススッと静かな音を立てて、ふすまが開いた。

As they were having this conversation, the sliding door opened with a quiet sound.

「おう、おまえさんかい。ははあ、またもらい酒を飲みに来たな。」

“Hey, it’s you. Haha, I’m here again to get some sake.”

そう言って月形は豪快に笑った。入ってきた男は、照れるでもなく、遠慮するでもなく、しごく当たり前のように、座布団の上にすわった。

Tsukigata said and laughed heartily. The man who came in wasn’t shy nor holds back, but just sat down on the cushion as if it were normal.

「いやあ、今日もつかれた、つかれた。じゃ、一杯いただくよ。」

“Well, I’m tired again today. I’ll have a drink.”

その男は牛乳びんの底のように分厚いめがねの奥で、うれしそうな目をした。

The man’s eyes looked happy behind glasses as thick as the bottom of a milk bottle.

「月形さん、どうだったい、今日の撮影は。またかっこよく、バッタバッタと悪人退治かい。」

“Tsukigata-san, how did you like today’s photo shoot? You’re cool again, killing off bad guys like a grasshopper.”

「まあね。」

“Well.”

「いいよな、大スターは。金まわりがよくて。そっちのあんたも、遠慮しないでどんどん飲んで。」妙な男たちである。めがねの男と月形竜之介は知り合いのようだが、めがねの男と伊福部はまったくの初対面らしい。それなのに、互いに名前も名乗らず、また月形も2人を紹介することもなく、それでいてその席は大いに盛り上がった。特にめがねの男は、名前も名乗らないまま、おしゃべりをしながら大酒を飲んで、実に楽しそうだった。

“That’s good, big stars. They have good money. Don’t hold back and drink as much as you like.” They are strange men. The man wearing glasses and Ryunosuke Tsukigata appear to be acquaintances, but the man wearing glasses and Ifukube seem to be meeting for the first time. Despite this, they didn’t say their names to each other, nor did Tsukigata introduce them to each other, and yet the atmosphere was very lively. The man in glasses in particular looked like he was having fun, chatting and drinking heavily without giving his name.

「いやあ、ゆかい、ゆかい。やっぱり酒は楽しく飲まなくてはいかん。」

“Well, good, good. After all, you should enjoy drinking alcohol.”

「ただ酒だとなおうまいだろう。」

“It would probably be better if it was just alcohol.”

月形が皮肉まじりにそう言うと、

When Tsukigata said that sarcastically,

「ああ、酒はやっぱりただ酒にかぎる。」

“Ah, alcohol is just alcohol after all.”

こんな調子で、またまた盛り上がる。そんな男を見ていると、伊福部もついつい楽しくなって、深酒をする。

At this rate, things will get exciting again. Looking at such a man, Ifukube can’t help but get excited and start drinking heavily.

「よしっ、じゃ、そろそろ帰るか。じゃ、あんた。またいっしょに飲もうじゃないか。」

“Okay, I guess I should go home now. Well then, you. Let’s have a drink together again.”

めがねの男は、風のようにあらわれ、大酒を飲んで風のように帰っていった。そんな男と伊福部はった。そしたいそう気が合い、その後も数年にわたって、お互いに名前も知らないまま、たびたび会った。てそのたびに伊福部は、酒をおごらされたのである。

The man wearing glasses appeared like the wind, drank a lot, and went home like the wind. Ifukube met such a man. We really hit it off, and over the next few years we met often, without knowing each other’s names. Every time, Ifukube was forced to buy alcohol.
