次々とロケット弾が発射される。はじめゴジラは、気にもとめない様子だったが、やがてそれうでをたたき落とそうと腕を動かしはじめる。

Rockets are fired one after another. At first, Godzilla doesn’t seem to care, but then he begins to move his arm in an attempt to knock it off.

このシーンはハイスピード撮影ではなく、24コマの撮影になっている。ゴジラのいる場面では、このシーンだけが唯一、ハイスピード撮影を採用していない。おそらくすばやく動く、ゴジラの生物としての一面を表現したかったのだろう。また、ロケット弾のスピード感を出したかったのではないかと考えられる。このシーンでもゴジラは右腕を激しく動かす。やはり、左腕が動かしにくい着ぐるみだったことがわかる。

This scene was not shot at high speed, but instead shot in 24 frames. This is the only scene with Godzilla that does not use high-speed shooting. Perhaps they wanted to express Godzilla’s fast-moving, living side. It is also thought that they wanted to give the impression of speed of a rocket. Godzilla moves his right arm violently in this scene as well. As expected, it was clear that his left arm was in a costume that made it difficult to move.

ゴジラを攻撃する戦闘機は、ノースアメリカンF-86Fセイバー(アメリカ製のジェット戦闘機で、セイパーは愛称。自衛隊にも導入された)の木製ミニチュアを、ワイヤーでつって飛ばす。そこから発射されるロケット弾は、「曳光弾」と呼ばれる鉛筆ほどの火薬で、ゴジラの背中側に向けて飛ばす。東京瀧を照らすサーチライトが、濃いスモークに当てられた照明によって表現され、戦闘機とロケット弾が飛びかう迫力の場面となった。

The fighter plane that attacks Godzilla is a wooden miniature of the North American F-86F Saber (an American-made jet fighter, nicknamed “Saber,” which was also introduced to the Self-Defense Forces), suspended from wire. The rocket fired from there is a pencil-sized gunpowder called a “tracer bullet” that is sent toward Godzilla’s back. The searchlights illuminating Tokyo Falls were expressed by the lighting cast on the thick smoke, creating an impressive scene of fighter jets and rockets flying at each other.

「ここだ、あれが役に立つぞ。」

“Here it is. That will help.”

戦闘機をたたき落とそうとするゴジラ。それは、動物園で見た、クマがコッペパンをキャッチしようとするしぐさだ。

Godzilla tries to knock down a fighter plane. It’s the behavior of a bear trying to catch a hot dog that I saw at the zoo.

中島の演技は、実に「自然」だった。この演技に円谷は、何の注文もつけなかった。

Nakajima’s acting was truly “natural.” Tsuburaya had no orders for this performance.

激しい攻防シーンの撮影が夜おそくまで続く。プールの水は冷たく、気温も低かった。長かった撮影も秋の入り口にさしかかり、ようやくゴールが見えてきた。

Filming of the intense battle and battle scenes continues until late at night. The water in the pool was cold and the temperature was low. The long shoot has now reached the beginning of autumn, and the goal is finally in sight.

The pride of a special effects director

「ゴジラ」は円谷のもと、中島がゴジラを演じている特撮班と、本多監督の指示で普通のドラマのように俳優が演じる本編班とが、別々に並行して、それぞれのスケジュールをこなしている。本編で仕事をした大部屋の仲間たちは、同じ大部屋俳優である中島に、いろいろなことを聞きたがった。中島と仲のよい加藤茂雄はこんな質問をした。

“Godzilla” was produced under Tsuburaya’s special effects team, in which Nakajima plays Godzilla, and the main production team, in which Godzilla is played by actors like in a normal drama, under the direction of director Honda. They all follow their own schedules. The comrades in he large room where they worked in the main story wanted to ask Nakajima, who is also a big-room actor, various things. Shigeo Kato, who is close to Nakajima, asked this question.

「この前、塗物に追われて逃げる人間』っていうのをやったんだけど、怪物って、どんな怪物なんだ?」

“The other day, I did a story about a person running away from being chased by painted objects,” but what kind of monster is that?”

ゴジラに追われる俳優がゴジラのことを知らない。大部屋俳優とはそういうものなのだ。「とにかく変わった仕事だったよ。怪物は山みたいに大きくて、人間は豆粒みたいなものらしい。なんでも怪物を撮ったフィルムとあとで合成するとか言ってたな。」

The actor being chased by Godzilla doesn’t know about Godzilla. That’s what it means to be an actor. “Anyway, it was a strange job. Monsters are as big as mountains, and humans are like peas He said he would combine the film with the monsters later.”

大部屋俳優たちにとっても、今までにない撮影である。どんな仕上がりになるのか、見当もつかない。

It was an unprecedented shoot for the actors in the room. They have no idea how it will turn out.

本編の別の場所でロケをしていたメンバーも同じようなことを言った。

Members who were filming in other locations for the main story also said similar things.

「助監督がさ、山の上の雲を指さして、『あれを怪物だと思っておどろけ。』って言うんだ。あんな変な仕事は初めてだよ。」

“My assistant director pointed to a cloud above the mountain and said, ‘You should be surprised and think it’s a monster.’ I’ve never done such a strange job before.”
