“I don’t know if it’s a monster movie or something, but we’re in trouble if you do something alarmist.” The staff members said to the police officer, giving them a big glare.

Walking around the Ginza set is Nakajima. The costume was much easier to walk in than it was during the first test. This was the result of painstaking modification by the modeling staff.

Nakajima saw the outside world through Godzilla’s peephole. Although it’s called a peephole, it’s just a small hole that pops up around the neck (see the photo on page 118). So you can’t see it clearly. When I walk, I can’t see my toes at all. But from up there, the set looked like a real city.

“It’s like being a real monster.”

Nakajima was vaguely thinking about this in his cramped costume. “But no matter how much I act, no one watching the movie will know that it’s me. They’re all watching Godzilla.”

Although it was the norm for a B2 actor, Nakajima felt a bit of loneliness.

“Loneliness” When you step inside the costume, you feel this strongly. It doesn’t matter if the costume is heavy, stiff, or hot, as long as you put up with it. However, the feeling of loneliness is something that is difficult to get rid of, and there is no way to live with it. It may have been similar to the loneliness of Godzilla, who grew to be incredibly large and had a strange appearance, and was feared by humans just by being there.

Inside the costume was a different world. Even the loud voices that could be heard in the studio were blocked by the thick rubber walls and only sounded muffled once inside the costume. The world seen through the small peephole seems to be a world far away. If the back is closed, you will never be able to get out on your own. When I think about that, even though I’m wearing a hot costume, a chill runs down my back.

Nakajima became the first Japanese to attempt a fire stunt in “Pacific Eagle,” which was released the year before “Godzilla.” That is, the now-familiar stunt of actually setting your body on fire and rolling around. In this way, Nakajima, who was devoted to his work as a B2 actor, never compromised on himself. However, even Nakajima said that while watching Godzilla, he felt feelings similar to anxiety and loneliness.

There are only two actors in this special effects studio: myself and Tezuka. It’s completely different from other places where you work with a large group of actors.

“Godzilla is lonely.”

I’m sure Tezuka feels the same way. But I have no choice but to do it. As a B2 actor, I have no choice but to silently complete the tasks in front of him.

As I have already written, at first there were two people inside Godzilla. They are Tezuka and Nakajima. However, as filming progressed, Nakajima was increasingly chosen to play the role of Godzilla. At first, the costume was tight for just one minute, but once I got used to it, I was able to stay in it for about 15 minutes.

After all, Nakajima is young. No matter how much Tezuka is a former professional baseball player, he cannot win at his age. His youth not only improved his physical strength, but also helped him in other ways.
