ゴジラ始動
Godzilla starts

撮影スタジオに、国会議事堂のミニチュアが組まれた。小さくしたといっても、中央塔はゴジラのせたけ背丈ほどもある大作で、細かい部分まで実にていねいに、そしてリアルに作られている。これは、美術スタッフが何日もかけて作り上げた力作だった。

A miniature of the National Diet Building was set up in the photo studio. Although it may have been made smaller, the central tower is still a masterpiece, as tall as Godzilla, and every detail has been carefully and realistically constructed. This was a masterpiece that the art staff spent many days creating.

まずは着ぐるみに入らず、手塚がセットに上がった。

First, Tezuka went on set without getting into the costume.

「ここをまっすぐ歩いて、国会議事堂へ向かってくれ。議事堂に足が当たったら、自然とこわれるように作ってあるから。」

“Walk straight here and head towards the National Diet Building. It’s built in such a way that if your foot hits it, it will break on its own.”

円谷が手塚に指示を出す。ゴジラがこわす正面右側(衆議院)の建物は、石こうで作られ、壁にノきざコギリで細かい「刻み」が入れてある。もちろん、こわれやすいようにだ。こわさない中央塔などはベニヤ板で作られている。

Tsuburaya gives instructions to Tezuka. The building to the right of the front (House of Representatives) that Godzilla destroys is made of plaster, and the wall has fine “notches” made with a saw. Of course, it’s fragile. The central tower, which cannot be destroyed, is made of plywood.

セットのそばに、3台のキャメラがある。そして3人のキャメラマン。普通の映画であれば、キャメラは1台。もちろん、キャメラマンもひとりが基本だ。『ゴジラ』も本編は1台で撮影された。しかし特撮で、時間をかけて作り上げたミニチュアをこわすのは一発勝負である。作り直すことになれば、映画そのものの進行にも遅れが出てしまう。そのため3つのアングル(物を見る角度)から同時にキャメラをまわし、それを編集してシーンを組み立てるのだ。

There are three cameras near the set. And three cameramen. In a normal movie, there is only one camera. Of course, there is usually only one cameraman. The main part of “Godzilla” was also shot with one camera. However, in special effects, it takes only one shot to destroy the miniatures that have taken so much time to create. If it were to be remade, the progress of the movie itself would be delayed. For this reason, the camera is rotated from three angles (angles from which things are viewed) at the same time, and the scenes are assembled by editing them.

有川は床にはいつくばるようにして、低くしたキャメラをのぞきこんでいる。2メートルのゴジラとを50メートルに見せるには、ミニチュアの人間になって見上げるように撮る必要があるのだ。

Arikawa is crouching on the floor, looking into the camera that is set low. In order to make Godzilla, which is 2 meters tall, appear to be 50 meters tall, it is necessary to take the picture as a miniature human looking up.

そんなことに手塚や中島が感心していると、上の方から何やらポタポタと水滴が落ちてくる。よくすいてきせ見ると、それは照明係の汗だった。照明係は「二重」と呼ばれる、高い足場の上で仕事をしている。特撮のスタジオは照明の数が、一般のスタジオの倍はある。二重の上は大変な暑さにちがない。おくはいけいセットの奥には、黒い布をかけた大きな壁がある。これが背景になる「ホリゾント」だ。これが遠くの青空になったり、曇り空になったりする。この現場のホリゾントは、もちろん夜景を表現するためのものだ。

While Tezuka and Nakajima were admiring this, water droplets began to trickle down from above. When I looked closely, I saw that it was the sweat of the lighting staff. The lighting staff work on high scaffolding called “double.” Special effects studios have twice as many lights as regular studios. It must be very hot up there. At the back of the Okuhakei set is a large wall covered with black cloth. This is the background of “Horizont” [Cyclorama]. This may turn into a blue sky in the distance or a cloudy sky. The horizon at this site was, of course, used to express the night view.

いよいよゴジラの始動だ。そのゴジラは、例のやぐらに立てかけてある。180センチ以上もある開米は、ゴジラの世話をするのにちょうどいい。長身であるところから、「チョーさん」とみんなから呼ばれていた。その開米の手助けを借りて、まずは手塚が入る。

Godzilla is finally starting. The Godzilla is leaning against the tower. The open rice, measuring over 180 cm, is perfect for taking care of Godzilla. Because of his height, everyone called him “Cho-san.” With the help of the Kaimai, Tezuka enters first.

「いててて。」

“Please stay.”

ゴジラに足を入れた手塚が悲鳴をあげた。

Tezuka, who put his foot inside Godzilla, screamed.

「どうした、テッちゃん。」「足が、足が痛いんだよ。」

“What’s wrong, Tecchan?” “My foot, my foot hurts.”

その足を抜いてみると、ゴジラの中に、ペンチが入っていた。

When he pulled out the leg, he found a pair of pliers inside Godzilla.

「何だよ、これ。」

“What is this?”

「あっ、悪い、悪い。置き忘れだ。」

“Oh, bad, bad. I left it behind.”
