「いや、それだと恐怖感が出ないだろう。もっとだれも見たことのないような感じでさ。」

“No, it won’t make you feel scared. It’s like no one else has ever seen.”

スタッフそれぞれにイメージがある。だからなかなか決まらない。とりあえず、丸いイボ状の肌でゴジラを作った。

Each staff member has an image. So it’s hard to decide. For the time being, I made Godzilla with round wart-like skin.

「これ、なかなかいいんじゃないの?」と、だれかが言った次の日には、「やっぱり恐怖感が足りないな。」となる。

“Isn’t this pretty good?” the next day someone said, “It’s not enough fear.”

「いったい、どうすりゃいいんだ!」

“What the hell am I supposed to do!”

利光は頭をかかえた。二転三転したあと、最後にゴツゴツとしたワニ肌の体表に行き着く。

Toshimitsu held his head. After a couple of twists and turns, we finally arrive at the rugged crocodile skin.

「なかなかいいよ、これは。肌はこれでいこう。」

“This is pretty good. Let’s go with this skin.”

こうして、ようやく体表のイメージが決まった。荒々しい岩肌のようにも、水爆による傷跡のようにも見えるワニ肌は、ゴジラの力強さと恐怖を体現していた。

In this way, the image of the body surface was finally decided. The crocodile skin, which looks like rough rocks or scars from a hydrogen bomb, embodies Godzilla’s strength and fear.

撮影開始まであと1ヵ月。徹夜に次ぐ徹夜で話し合いが続く。そして、ついにキング・オブ・モンスター、ゴジラの粘土原型ができあがった。背には、ヒイラギの葉のような鋭い切れこみのあるひれが、3列並んでいる。

One month until the start of shooting. The discussion continues overnight after all-night. And finally, the King of Monsters, Godzilla’s clay prototype was completed. There are three rows of sharply cut fins on the back like holly leaves.

「こりゃあ、すごい迫力だ。」

“Oh my gosh, it’s so powerful.”

「いいねえ、こいつが動くところを想像すると、身ぶるいがするよ。」

“Yeah, imagining this thing moving makes me shudder.”

スタッフたちの評判は上々だった。しかし……。

The reputation of the staff was excellent. But…….

その途中の7月5日、『ゴジラ』の製作発表記者会見が開かれた。まだうろこ状のゴジラだったが、利光の作った粘土原型をもとに作成した写真も公開され、さっそく、その日の夕刊に掲載される。

On July 5th, a press conference was held to announce the production of “Godzilla.” Although it was still a scaly Godzilla, a photograph created based on the clay prototype made by Toshimitsu was also released, and was immediately published in the evening paper that day.

「ゲテもの映画界をまかり通る”原子怪物、東京へ上陸」かいぶっという見出しに、田中や利光をはじめスタッフ一同は、思わずこぶしをにぎりしめた。

Tanaka, Toshimitsu, and the rest of the staff involuntarily clenched their fists at the headline, “Atomic monster lands in Tokyo, which runs through the film world of low-quality productions.”

「何も知らないくせに、勝手なことを言いやがって。」

“Though you don’t know anything, you say selfish things.”

「ゴジラのどこがゲテモノだって言うんだ!」

“What part of Godzilla is called low-quality!”

新聞でもやはり、特撮映画は一段低い扱いだった。けれどこの作品に、自分の映画人生をかけようとする男がいた。

Even in newspapers, special effects films were treated one step lower. However, there was a man who tried to stake his movie life on this work.

「わたしはこの映画で、特撮の未来を切り開いてみせる。特撮の持つすばらしい可能性を、みんなにみと認めさせたい。もし失敗したら、この撮影所にいることはできない。」

“With this movie, I will open up the future of special effects. I want everyone to recognize the wonderful potential of special effects. If I fail, I cannot stay at this studio.”

特技監督の円谷英二だった。

It was Eiji Tsuburaya, the special effects director.

かたい決意を胸に、スタッフの努力は続く。そして、いよいよ『ゴジラ』は制作に突入した。以しょうかいはいゆう下、『ゴジラ』の「あらすじ」を紹介しておこう。(かっこ内の人名は、その役を演じた俳優の名前)

With a firm determination in their hearts, the staff will continue their efforts. And finally, “Godzilla” entered production. Let me introduce the “synopsis” of “GOJIRA” below. (The name in parentheses is the name of the actor who played the part.)

太平洋上で、突如、1隻の貨物船(栄光丸)が異様な白熱光線につつまれ、炎上、沈没した。

In the Pacific Ocean, suddenly, a cargo ship (Eikomaru) was enveloped in a strange incandescent beam, caught fire, and sank.

その救助に向かった船も、次々に謎の沈没をとげる。

The ships that went to rescue them also mysteriously sink one after another.

そのころ、大戸島(伊豆諸島の架空の島)に漁船の船員がただひとり、板切れにつかまり流れ着はかいくが、船は破壊され、「やられただ。」とだけ口にして、そのまま息絶えてしまう。島の長老こうどうくにのり(高堂国典)は、「やっぱり、ゴジラかもしんねえ…………。」とつぶやく。

Around that time, on Odo Island (an imaginary island in the Izu Islands), there was only one sailor on a fishing boat. The island’s elder Kodoku Ninori (Koudou Kuninori) murmured, “It might be Godzilla after all…”.

おびえる島民たちは、厄払いの舞をまって伝説の怪獣をなだめようとする。その夜、大戸島を大嵐がおそい、暴風雨の中、「ドーン、ドーン」という不気味な音がひびく。

The frightened islanders wait for the dance of exorcism to appease the legendary monster. That night, a big storm hits Odo Island, and an eerie sound of “boom, boom” is heard in the rain.
