三十年ぶりに、ゴジラは復活した―――。昭和二十九年当時、日本は敗戦の痛手をようやく忘れ、復興の途につこうとしていた。

After thirty years, Godzilla is back. At the time of 1954, Japan had finally forgotten the pain of its defeat and was on the road to recovery.

第一作「ゴジラ」のタイトルに〝賛助・海上保安庁〟と見られるごとく、自衛隊はこの年の七月に保安隊からようやく昇格したばかり、とても一国を護るに足る軍備とはいえなかった。

As the title of the first work “Godzilla” can be seen as “supporting Japan Coast Guard,” the Self-Defense Forces was finally promoted from the Coast Guard in July of this year, and it could not be said that the armaments were enough to protect a single country.

そこへ登場したゴジラは、戦争の悪夢の再現であった。その襲撃は「東京大空襲」の再来に他ならなかった。不意をつかれたという意味では、人間側の驚きやうろたえ方も、よく似ていた。

The Godzilla that appeared there was a reproduction of the nightmare of war. The raid was nothing less than the return of the “Great Tokyo Air Raid.” In the sense that they were taken by surprise, the surprise and panic on the human side were also very similar.

今日、日本の国力はGNP世界第三位となり、戦力も世界第八位に匹敵するものに増強された。大国の核保有量は地球上の人類を何百回も絶滅し得るほどのものとなった。

Today, Japan’s national power has become the third largest in the world by GNP [Gross National Product], and its military strength has been strengthened to a level comparable to the world’s eighth largest. The nuclear arsenal of the great powers has grown to such an extent that it could exterminate the human race on earth hundreds of times.

日本の堅持する〝非核三原則〟の意義は大きい。

The “Three Non-Nuclear Principles” that Japan adheres to are of great significance.

では〝核〟という最終兵器が、ゴジラ退治に有効かというと、まるで反対である。

Then, if the final weapon called “nuclear” is effective in exterminating Godzilla, it is completely the opposite.

新作「ゴジラ」でこの点の深追いはしていないが、いつの日にか人類は「ゴジラ」を核攻撃するという愚挙に出て、手ひどいしっぺ返しをくうことだろう。

I haven’t delved into this point in the new “Godzilla,” but one day mankind will do the foolish act of nuclear attack on “Godzilla,” and it will come back to haunt him.

なぜなら、ゴジラこそ〝核〟の分身であり、人類の持つ〝暗黒部分”の具現化されたものだからである。

This is because Godzilla is the alter ego of the “core” and the embodiment of the “dark part” of mankind.

地球を被う〝核”の肥大化に伴い、今日のゴジラは、身長五十メートルから八十メートルへ、体重は二万トンから五万トンに変化した。破壊力も凄まじいものとなった。

Today’s Godzilla has grown from 50 meters to 80 meters in height and weighed from 20,000 tons to 50,000 tons as the “nucleus” covering the earth expanded. The destructive power was also tremendous.

人類の憎しみあいが強まれば強まるほど、ゴジラは巨大化し、パワーアップして現れるのだ。

As the hatred between humans grows stronger, Godzilla grows bigger and more powerful.

その、人類と怪獣の対決のありさまを、映画はスペクタクルとして描き出した訳だが、その面白さを紙上で再現したのが、本書である。

The movie depicts the confrontation between humans and monsters as a spectacle, but this book reproduces the fun on paper.

映画のフィルムをまるまる一本焼き増しし面白そうな場面をコマの状態で抜き出した。おげで映画の躍動感を、かなり写しとることができたのではないかと思う。

A whole movie film was reprinted and interesting scenes were extracted in the form of frames. Thanks to that, I think I was able to capture the dynamism of the movie quite well.

収録した脚本とあわせ読んでいただければ、すでに映画をごらん下さった方にも、まだの方にも、充分「ゴジラ」をお楽しみいただけるはずである。

If you read along with the recorded script, you should be able to fully enjoy “Godzilla” whether you have already seen the movie or not.

次回、「ゴジラ」がこの世に現れるとき、世界はどのように変化していることだろう?

How will the world change the next time “Godzilla” appears in the world?

あいも変らず軍拡競争を続けているなら、ゴジラの暴れ方も、無制限に激しいものになるに相違ない。

If the arms race continues without change, Godzilla’s rampage will undoubtedly become more intense.

神が、おごれる人類に警告のためにつかわした〝聖獣〟としてのゴジラが、この世に現れなくてすむには、二つの道がある。

There are two ways to prevent Godzilla from appearing in this world as a “sacred beast” sent by God to warn mankind.

ひとつは、核を盛大に爆発させて人類が自らを滅すこと、もうひとつは、平和への道をさぐること。どちらが王道かは、自明である。

One is for humanity to destroy itself by a grand nuclear explosion, and the other is to search for a path to peace. It is self-evident which one is the royal road.
