念願かなって、ようやく沖縄が本土に復帰、この機に海洋博が開催されることが決定。その頃の沖縄ブームに乗って、ついにゴジラも沖縄上陸を果たす。

Okinawa finally returned to the mainland, and it was decided that the Ocean Expo would be held on this occasion. Riding the Okinawa boom at that time, Godzilla finally landed in Okinawa.

沖縄の守護神怪獣キングシーサーが登場、ゴジラと連携して第三惑星人が操るロボット怪獣メカゴジラと激闘を繰り広げるという物語伝説の守護神と原子怪獣のタッグコンビ結成である。

Okinawa’s guardian deity monster King Shisa appears, and in cooperation with Godzilla, a fierce battle with the robot monster MechaGodzilla controlled by the Aliens of the Third Planet is formed.

キングシーサーの設定は、「キングコング」や「モスラ」などを髣髴とさせる南の島特有のエキゾチックなロマンを秘めていて、物語にふくらみを持たせている。キングシーサーは神秘の怪獣で、復活の謎を解き明かし、乙女が祈りを捧げた時にあらわれる。昔の少年雑誌の冒険物語を見るような、どことなく懐かしさを感じさせる設定である。

The setting of King Shisa has an exotic romance peculiar to the southern island, reminiscent of “King Kong” and “Mothra,” and gives the story substance. King Shisa is a mysterious monster that unravels the mystery of resurrection and appears when a maiden prays. The setting is somewhat nostalgic, like an adventure story in an old boys’ magazine.

しかしながら、今回のハイライトとして挙げるべきは、何と言ってもメカゴジラの登場であろう。

However, the highlight of this time is the appearance of MechaGodzilla.

なぜか盟友アンギラスがゴジラと戦い始める。激しく攻撃しあう2匹、するとゴジラの皮膚の下から金属が露出する。顔つきもいつものゴジラとどこか違う。そこで種明かし、その実態は何とロボットのゴジラだった。この見事な裏切りは観客を大いに喜ばせた。

For some reason, my friend Anguirus begins to fight Godzilla. The two attack each other violently, and the metal is exposed from under Godzilla’s skin. The face is also somewhat different from the usual Godzilla. There, the seeds were revealed, and the actual situation was a robot Godzilla. This spectacular betrayal greatly delighted the audience.

昭和のゴジラシリーズ末期に位置する作品でありながら、次世代につながる新機軸を打ち立てた感がある傑作だ。形や性能はそのつど変化するが、「メカゴジラ」というコンセプトは、「平成」、「ミレニアム」のそれぞれのシリーズにも受け継がれ、それぞれのクライマックスで登場している。

Although it is a work that is located at the end of the Showa Godzilla series, it is a masterpiece that feels like it has set up a new axis that will lead to the next generation. The shape and performance change each time, but the concept of “MechaGodzilla” is inherited in each series of “Heisei” and “Millennium,” and it appears at the climax of each.

戦闘のシーンでは、ゴジラの皮膚が裂け、血液が噴き出すなどの描写の過激化も一段と進んでいる。この表現の過激化には最後まで賛否両論があったが、シリアスな戦闘シーンに迫力があったことは否めないだろう。

In the battle scenes, Godzilla’s skin is torn and blood is spurting out. There were pros and cons to this extreme expression until the end, but it is undeniable that the serious battle scenes were powerful.

特撮に目を転ずれば、前々作のジェットジャガーあたりから、着ぐるみにメタリック感を表現できる樹脂素材が多用されるようになった。着ぐるみの主な材質の改良が進み、従来に比べて、かなり動きやすいものになっていた。メカゴジラのボディの金属感も素材の発達なしには不可能なもので、『キングコングの逆襲』におけるメカニコングとは隔世の感がある。

If you turn your eyes to the special effects, from around the Jet Jaguar of the previous work, resin materials that can express a metallic feeling have been used extensively in costumes. The main material of the costume has been improved, making it much easier to move than before. The metal feel of MechaGodzilla’s body is also impossible without the development of materials, and it feels like a world away from Mechanic Kong in “King Kong Escapes.”

また、メカゴジラ自体が兵器の塊のような存在であることを印象付けるために、身体の各所から光線、白熱光、ミサイルが飛び出す設定になっているが、着ぐるみは、その機械的イメージをうまく醸し出していて、取り付けられたギミックの機能も素晴しいものだった。機械仕掛けの分身を相手に「昭和のゴジラ」は最終章へと…。

Also, in order to give the impression that MechaGodzilla itself is like a mass of weapons, light rays, incandescent lights, and missiles are set to shoot out from various parts of the body, but the costume successfully brings out the mechanical image. And the function of the attached gimmick was also wonderful. “Godzilla of the Showa era” goes to the final chapter against the mechanical alter ego.
