『ゴジラ』原作小説あれこれ
This and that of the original Godzilla novel

第一作「ゴジラ」は、公開当時に以下の2つの小説版が香山滋名義で出版されている。

The first work “Godzilla” was published under the name of Shigeru Kayama in the following two novel versions at the time of its release.

●「怪獣ゴジラ」(岩谷書店刊、昭和20年10月25日発行)
“Kaiju Godzilla” (published by Iwatani Bookstore, published on October 25, 1945)

映画「ゴジラ」の公開に合わせ、いわば〝タイアップ〟的に出版された、初のゴジラ小説本。香山滋の原作およびシナリオをテキストとして構成されたラジオドラマ「怪獣ゴジラ」(作:龍野敏、ニッポン放送)の台本が基になっているため、この小説もシナリオ形式で書かれており、一般の小説とはかなり違った雰 囲気となっている。

The first Godzilla novel book published in a so-called “tie-up” style in conjunction with the release of the movie “Godzilla.” Since it is based on the script of the radio drama “Kaiju Godzilla” (written by Satoshi Tatsuno, Nippon Broadcasting System) composed of the original story and scenario of Shigeru Kayama, this novel is also written in scenario format and is general. The atmosphere is quite different from the novel.

映画で省略されている場面(大戸島探索や、萩原記者をはじめとするマスコミの反応など) もかなり細かく描き込まれており、映画と小説というメディアの違いを比較することがで きる。

The scenes omitted in the movie (searching for Odo Island, the reaction of the media including Hagiwara reporter, etc.) are also drawn in considerable detail, and it is possible to compare the differences between the media of movies and novels.

“Godzilla Tokyo / Osaka” (published by Shimabara Publishing Co., Ltd., published on July 20, 1955)

映画「ゴジラ」「ゴジラの逆襲」を児童向けにノベライズしたもの。両作品とも完成作品にかなり忠実であるが、「コジラ」のほうは児童向け小説ということで、新吉を主人公として書き直してある。

A novelization of the movies “Godzilla” and “Godzilla’s Counterattack” for children. Both works are quite faithful to the finished work, but “Godzilla” is a novel for children, so Shinkichi is rewritten as the main character.

ストーリーはほとんど変更されていないにもかかわらず、この小説はSFというよりむしろ冒険小説〟的な印象が残る作品である。

Although the story has hardly changed, this novel is more like an adventure novel than science fiction.

なお、これらの小説はあくまで完成作品(およびそのシナリオ) を基に書かれたもので、俗にいう〝原作〟とは異なる。

In addition, these novels are written based on the finished work (and its scenario), and are different from the so-called “original.”
