映画の流れをもう一度確認すると、水爆実験によって目覚めたゴジラは、フリゲート艦の爆雷によ攻撃を受けて東京湾に入りこみ、黒い姿を見せる。船上パーティーで優雅にダンスを踊っていた客たちが驚く場面だが、この船が襲われたわけではない。ゴジラは海に身を沈めていた上半身を水面か突き出してこちらを見る。潜水艦が潜望鏡深度からゆっくりと浮上して艦橋を現すときのようだ。自分の身を隠す場所を求めて、東京湾の深さを測定していたのかもしれない。
If you check the flow of the movie again, Godzilla, awakened by the hydrogen bomb test, is attacked by the depth charges of the frigate and enters Tokyo Bay, showing a black figure. The scene surprised the elegantly dancing guests at the party on board, but the ship was not attacked. Godzilla sticks out his upper body from the water surface and looks at them. It’s like when a submarine slowly rises from periscope depth to reveal the bridge. He may have been measuring the depth of Tokyo Bay in search of a place to hide himself.
浦賀水道のあたりから南の東京湾は深くえぐれているが、湾内にはいると平均水深は十七メートルとなり、ゴジラの五十メートルの高さでは、ちょっと立ち上がるだけで海面から飛び出してしまうだろう。このように湾内を探る行動は、ゴジラの全身が黒いことも含めて、どこか「黒船」を連想させるではないか。たとえば、一八四九年にはイギリス艦マリナー号がやってきて、東京(当時は江戸だが)湾の水深を測定したあとで、伊豆の下田に立ち寄って開国をせまった。
The Tokyo Bay south of the Uraga Channel is deeply hollowed out, but once you enter the bay, the average depth is 17 meters, and at a height of 50 meters, Godzilla would jump out of the sea just by standing up. The action of exploring the bay in this way, including the fact that Godzilla’s whole body is black, is somewhat reminiscent of “black ships.” For example, in 1849, the British ship Mariner arrived, and after measuring the depth of water in Tokyo (which was then Edo) Bay, stopped at Shimoda in Izu to press for the opening of the country.
とりわけ『ゴジラ』が公開された百年前、つまり今から百六十年前にあたる一八五四年には、アメリカの全権大使としてペリー提督の率いる艦隊が二度目の来航をした。ペリー艦隊が前年にフィルモア大統領の親書をもって江戸湾の入り口である浦賀を訪れたとき、歴史の教科書でおなじみの「泰平やゆの眠りをさます上喜撰(蒸気船)たった四杯で夜も寝られず」という狂歌で揶揄された(明治になってから作成されたという説もある)。
Especially 100 years ago before “Godzilla” was released, 160 years ago, in 1854, a fleet led by Commodore Perry as ambassador plenipotentiary of the United States visited Japan for the second time. The previous year, when Perry’s fleet visited Uraga, the entrance to Edo Bay, with a personal letter from President Fillmore, it was a well-known in history textbooks, it was ridiculed in a kyōka, “Awoken from sleep / of a peaceful quiet world / by Jokisen tea; / with only four cups of it / one can’t sleep even at night” (some say it was created after the Meiji period).

十九世紀になって、ペリーの艦隊以前にも黒船が出現した。この場合の「黒船」とは鉄の船という意味でついたのではなく、木の腐敗防止に黒いタールで塗られた外観のせいだった。あくまでも主流は木造の帆船だった。ところが、ペリーの艦隊には、当時のアメリカ海軍の最新鋭ともいえる蒸気の外輪船が二隻含まれていた。幕府は、阿片戦争の情報を踏まえて、過激な外国船打ち払い令から、薪や水を提供するという友好的な態度へと転換していた(ここからゴジラ映画のシリーズがゴジラとの共存といった方向転換をするのも見通せるはずだ)。
In the nineteenth century, black ships appeared even before Perry’s fleet. The “black ship” in this case did not mean an iron ship, but because of its appearance, which was painted with black tar to prevent the wood from rotting. The mainstream was wooden sailing ships. Perry’s fleet, however, included two of the most advanced steam paddlewheelers in the U.S. Navy at the time. Based on information about the Opium War, the shogunate changed its attitude from a radical ban on foreign ships to a friendly attitude of offering firewood and water. (From here, it should be possible to foresee that the Godzilla movie series will change direction such as coexistence with Godzilla).
それでも、幕府上層部から庶民にいたる黒船来襲のインパクトとなったのは、四艘の船がやってきただけでなく、外輪船という蒸気船を含んでいたせいである。蒸気船は「城鬼船」と書かれて、外から襲ってきた鬼に見立てられた絵も残っている(岩田みゆき「黒船がやってきた』)。艦長であるペリも、天狗や怪物化して描かれたものもある。だが、他方で庶民は黒船見物に出かけていた。沿岸に押し寄せてきたので、幕府は追い払う対策に困ったという。黒船に対する相反する対応も、ゴジラが近くまでやってきたというのに、夕涼みの船が出てダンスパーティーをしている場面が描かれるのにもどこか似ている。香山滋の小説版では疎開のようすが描かれたりするが、映画のなかでは「疎開先を探さなくては」というセリフはあっても、実施されていない。みな東京にそのまま平気で住んでいるのだ。
Nevertheless, the impact of the black ship attack on the general public from the upper echelons of the shogunate was not only due to the arrival of four ships, but also because it included steam ships called paddle boats. The steamship is written as “Castle demon ship,” and there is a picture that looks like a demon attacking from outside (Miyuki Iwata “Kurofune ga kitakita”). On the other hand, the common people went out to see the black ships. It is said that the shogunate was at a loss to find a way to drive them away because they were rushing to the coast. The contradictory response to Kurofune is also somewhat similar to the scene where Godzilla is approaching, but the ship in the evening cools off and is having a dance party. Shigeru Kayama’s novel version depicts the situation of evacuation, but in the movie, even if there is a line saying “I have to find a place to evacuate”, it is not carried out. All of them are living in Tokyo as they are.
確かにゴジラの侵攻に合わせて、荷物をもって沿岸から避難する住民が出てきたり、さらに湾岸地区への警戒の発令にあわせて、大八車に荷物を積んだりして右往左往する民衆の姿が描かれる。
Certainly, in line with Godzilla’s invasion, residents evacuated from the coast with their luggage, and in line with the issuance of a warning to the bay area, the appearance of the people who were rushing back and forth with their luggage loaded on the big cart was drawn.

だが、そうした混乱が生じているのは東京湾岸だけのようだ。山根家の人々も芹沢博士も、彼らの住まいから退去するようすはない。それどころか、尾形はサーチライトが夜空を照らす状況のなかで、山根博士に今日こそ結婚の許しを得よう、などと悠長なことを恵美子に言い出すほどだ。明日がゴジラによって奪われてしまうので、その前に既成事実を作り上げてしまおう、というセリフではないようだ。彼らはゴジラが内陸まで入りこめるはずがない、とどこか安心している。防衛線が敷かれているせいだろう。
But it seems that such confusion is occurring only in the Tokyo Bay area. Neither the Yamane family nor Dr. Serizawa seem to be leaving their homes. On the contrary, with the searchlights lighting up the night sky, Ogata goes so far as to suggest to Emiko that it’s time to get Dr. Yamane’s permission to marry him today. It doesn’t seem to be a line to make up a fait accompli because tomorrow will be taken away by Godzilla. They are somewhat relieved that Godzilla can’t go inland. It’s probably because of the defensive line.
その無意識の防衛線を作ったのが幕末の日本だった。一八五三年に予告された翌年のペリー来航に備えて江戸幕府は対抗措置を取った。譜代大名のなかで、川越、忍、会津、彦根の四藩が、湾の両側を分担して警護にあたっていた。なかでも川越藩が提案したのは、防衛線を三段階に設けることだった。さらに、韮山代官の江川英龍の提案で、台場の建設が進められた。もっとも、その設計は長崎経由で輸入されたオランダ人J・M・エンゲルベルツの「防海要論』など西洋の築城術に基づく(仲田正之『江川坦庵』)。外国船打ち払い令以降、海上防衛や砲術に関するオランダの理論書がたくさん読まれ、幕府の命令で翻訳もされていた。日本を守る防衛思想や建築技術すらも輸入品だったのだ。
It was Japan at the end of the Edo period that created that unconscious line of defense. The Edo shogunate took countermeasures in preparation for Perry’s arrival in 1853, which was announced in 1853. Among the fudai daimyo, four clans, Kawagoe, Shinobu, Aizu, and Hikone, divided the guards on both sides of the bay. Among them, the Kawagoe clan proposed to establish a line of defense in three stages. Furthermore, the construction of Daiba proceeded at the suggestion of Egawa Hidetatsu, the governor of Nirayama. However, its design was based on Western fortification techniques such as the Dutch J.M. Many Dutch theory books on defense and gunnery were read and translated by order of the shogunate, and even the defense ideas and construction techniques to protect Japan were imported.

台場とは砲台を置いて黒船を威嚇するための場所である。品川沖に埋め立てて作られた。現在「お台場」といえば、フジテレビの本社などがあり、レジャーや買い物のスポットになっているが、これは第十三号埋立地にのちにつけた愛称なのだ。隣接したお台場公園に第三台場が残され、レインボーブリッジの脇には第六台場がある。ペリー来航に備えて近くの御殿山を窪地にするほどえぐり、その土で急きょ整備されたのだが、予算の関係で計画のすべてが実現したわけではない。
Daiba is a place to place artillery to intimidate black ships. It was reclaimed off the coast of Shinagawa. Today, “Odaiba” is a spot for leisure and shopping, including the headquarters of Fuji Television Network, Inc., but this is the nickname given to the No. 13 landfill. The third Daiba is left in the adjacent Odaiba Park, and the sixth Daiba is next to the Rainbow Bridge. In preparation for Perry’s arrival, the nearby Gotenyama was dug out to create a depression, and the soil was used for the hurried maintenance, but due to budget constraints, not all of the plan was realized.

ちなみに、一八五四年末にはペリー艦隊に遅れてやっ進路を防いだのだ。てきて、「日露和親条約」の交渉をしたロシアのプチャーチン提督の乗ったディアナ号が、伊豆下田に停泊中に東海地震によって壊れる被害にあっている。ゴジラの百年前の日本は、南海トラフが動いて広範囲に地震が発生した時期でもあった。米露の黒船来襲や地震が連続したので、元号をそれまでの「嘉永」から「安政」へと変更した。だがその後、安政の大地震や安政の大獄といった事件が起こる。「政治の安定」への願いがこもっていた「安政」という元号が、皮肉にも国際情勢と自然災害という二つの波に襲われた幕末の動乱期を表すものとなってしまった。

ゴジラの最初の品川沖からの上陸と駅構内の破壊が起きたのは、ペリー艦隊の江戸城への接近を防ぐために作られた台場が直進を妨げたせいだ。大砲をもつ黒船が東京(江戸)湾を直進して江戸城を直撃しないようにと泥縄的におこなわれた事業が、百年後に見事に海防の役目を果たしたことになる。
Godzilla’s first landing off the coast of Shinagawa and the destruction of the station premises occurred because the Daiba, which was built to prevent Perry’s fleet from approaching Edo Castle, blocked the straight line. シナリオではゴジラは第二台場にあった品川灯台に引き寄せられ、襲うことになっていた。サーチライトで照らしだされるゴジラの姿を描いたピクトリアル・スケッチ(絵コンテ)も残っている。実際の完成した映画では、ゴジラが移動する後ろに灯台の灯りがあるので、第二台場の手前を通ったように描かれる。そのせいで前景にゴジラが置かれて奥行きをもつ映像となった。その後第二台場は港湾整備のために撤去された。
In the scenario, Godzilla was supposed to be attracted to and attack the Shinagawa Lighthouse at the second Diaba. There is also a pictorial sketch (storyboard) depicting Godzilla illuminated by searchlights. In the actual completed movie, the lights of the lighthouse are behind Godzilla’s movement, so it is depicted as if it passed in front of the second Diaba. As a result, Godzilla was placed in the foreground, creating an image with depth. After that, the second Daiba was removed for port maintenance.
二回目のときにはすでに学習したのか、ゴジラは躊躇せずに芝浦岸壁へと上陸する。東京湾という江戸前の海に出現し、開国を迫ったペリーのような黒船来襲こそが、ゴジラの基底にあるイメージではないだろうか。そのせいでいつまでも私たちの心を揺さぶるのだ。そう考えると、ゴジラ襲来をめぐって国会での議論が紛糾するのも、江戸幕府が黒船にうろたえながらも次々と対策を打った姿にも似ている。さらに言えば、黒船に乗りこもうとした洋学者たちの姿が、ゴジラの生命力という怪しい力に魅惑されてしまう山根博士の姿とも重なってくる。
Godzilla landed on the Shibaura quay without hesitation, as if he had already learned it the second time. The image of Godzilla at the base of Godzilla may be the black ship attack like Perry who appeared in the Edomae sea called Tokyo Bay and pressed for the opening of the country. That’s why it’s going to break our hearts forever. Considering this, the controversy in the Diet over Godzilla’s invasion is similar to how the Edo shogunate took countermeasures one after another while being panicked by the Black Ships. Furthermore, the appearance of Western scholars trying to board the black ship overlaps with the appearance of Dr. Yamane, who is fascinated by Godzilla’s life force, which is a suspicious power.
