「聖域なき構造改革」が映画界にも波及する。

十二月十五日に全国で公開される「ゴジラ・モスラ・キングギドラ大怪獣総攻撃」。クランクアップを目前にして、もっか東京・砧の東宝スタジオで追い込みに入っている。

“Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack” will be released nationwide on December 15th. With the crank-up just around the corner, he is working hard at Mokka’s Toho Studio in Kinuta, Tokyo.

そのゴジラシリーズで、善と悪の立場させてしまうプロジェクトがひそかに進行中だ。今回も主役はいちおう日本で唯一、世界に通用するゴジラが演じることになっている。が、特撮怪獣映画創成期の”人間の敵”に立ち戻ってしまうのだ。

In the Godzilla series, a project is secretly underway that will make the characters good and evil. This time as well, the leading role will be played by Japan’s only world-class Godzilla. However, it returns to the “human enemy” of the early days of special effects monster movies.

それはなぜ? ここにひとつのデータがある。これまで一九五四年のシリーズ第一作から、ゴジラ作品は二十四本製作された。その中で、最も観客を動員したのは「キングコング対ゴジラ」(一九六二年)の千二百五十五万人だ。ちなみに、一九八四年に復活した平成シリーズでの最高観客動員は「ゴジラ対モスラ」(一九九二年)の四百二十万人。

Why is that? Here is some data. Twenty-four Godzilla films have been produced since the first film in the series in 1954. Of these, “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962) attracted the largest audience of 12.55 million people. By the way, the highest audience attendance for the Heisei series, which was revived in 1984, was 4.2 million for “Godzilla vs. Mothra” (1992).

対照的に比較的、ファンの間で評判のよかった前作の「ゴジラXメガギラス」(ニ〇〇〇年)は、平成シリーズで最低の観客動員(百三十五万人)だった。数字が現すように、作品がヒットするには、ゴジラが「悪」を演じることが重要なファクターになるのだ。

In contrast, the previous film Godzilla X Megaguirus (2000), which had a relatively good reputation among fans, had the lowest audience attendance (1.35 million people) in the Heisei series. As the numbers show, for a work to become a hit, the important factor is that Godzilla plays the role of “evil.”

ということで、今回は白眼。造型を担当した品田冬樹氏は、「悪を強調する意味で、意志が伝わら「ないような白眼にした」という。

一方、ゴジラに取って代わって人間の味方となるのが、初の善を「演じるキングギドラだ。一九六四年に宇宙怪獣として登場以来、一貫して敵役。それが、平成ガメラシリーズで怪獣映画に革命をもたらした金子修介監督によって、正義の味方に大変身である。

On the other hand, the one who replaces Godzilla and becomes an ally of humans is King Ghidorah, who plays the role of good for the first time. Since his appearance as a space monster in 1964, he has consistently played the role of an enemy. Director Shusuke Kaneko, who revolutionized cinema, transformed him into an ally of justice.

さらに今回のギドラは操演ではなく、着ぐるみでスーツアクターの大橋明さん(三)が演じる。「CG全盛の時代にアナログの良さをわかってほしい。獣になることだけを考えて演技した」という。ただ、前回の結果(ゴジラ×メガギラス)は思わぬ副産物をもたらした。平成のゴジラシリーズは、単独で上映されてきたが、今回はなんと人気アニメの「とっとこハム太郎」と併映されるのだ。二本立てで家族そろって楽しめ、爆発的なヒットをもたらしそうだが、三十代後半からの怪獣世「代にとっては、複雑な思いが･･･。
