Lake Motosu

9.7.2021

Yesterday was Labor Day in the U.S. Traditionally, it is the last day of summer when we take our last summer day trip. Going to the beach is the thing to do during the summer. So that’s what I did, but virtually. There’s no better place to go than the lake where Rokuro Ibuki (伊吹六郎) enjoys a boat ride while Inventor Goro Ibuki and Hiroshi Jinkawa watch relaxing on the shore in Godzilla vs Megalon (1973). After some reaching on and reading, the location was determined to be Lake Motosu (本栖湖, 1-6-1, Marunouchi, Koufu-shi, Yamanashi, 400-0031) in Yamanashi prefecture along road 709. Lake Motosu is “the westernmost of the Fuji Five Lakes and located on the border of the towns of Fujikawaguchiko and Minobu in southern Yamanashi Prefecture near Mount Fuji, Japan.” The lake offers amazing views of Mt Fuji. It is “a popular resort, with many lakeside hotels, windsurfing facilities, camp sites, and excursion boats” (Source: Wikipedia). A boat ride sounds like a good idea!

The precise location along the lake where our heroes appear is found near Lake Motosuko Pleasure Boat “Moguran.” It can be pinpointed using Google Maps. Compare the distant mountain formations in both the movie still and Google panoramic view. They are an exact match.

Roku-chan dolphin boat ride on Lake Motosu turned out to be eventful one. From what I can determine, it was a cold day when shooting this scene and actor Hiroyuki Kawase was scared as well. Another great location to add to my Godzilla places to visit.
