東京・日比谷の有名ショッピングモール・日比谷シャンテの敷地内にある「合歓の広場」。地面に映画スターたちの手形がはめ込まれた噴水広場で一際目を引くのが、我らがゴジラの銅像だ。高さ1.3mの御影石の台座に乗ったゴジラ像は、高さ約1m、重量約130kg。合歓の広場周辺は人通りが多いため、注目度は抜群。世界的知名度を誇るゴジラだけあって、外国人観光客が記念撮影する様子が日常的に目にされる。日比谷のビジネスマンにとっては、絶好の待ち合わせスポットだ。「じゃあ、14時にゴジラ前で」というわけ(多分)。

“Nemu no Hiroba” [Welcome Square, Godzilla SMALL STATUE TOKIO ] is located in the premises of Hibiya Chanter, a famous shopping mall in Hibiya, Tokyo. The bronze statue of our Godzilla is the most eye-catching in the Fountain Square, where the handprints of movie stars are embedded in the ground. The Godzilla statue on a 1.3m high granite pedestal is about 1m high and weighs about 130kg. There are many people around the Welcome Square, so it attracts a lot of attention. As Godzilla boasts worldwide popularity, it is common to see foreign tourists taking commemorative photos. For businessmen in Hibiya, it is a perfect meeting spot. “Well, in front of Godzilla at 14 o’clock” (probably).

東宝本社ビル前という、まさにお膝元に佇むゴジラの威容。台座には、第1作『ゴジラ』の山根博士の名台詞が刻まれている。1995年12月3日に行われたこの銅像の除幕式の様子は、100ページにて。

In front of the Toho head office building, Godzilla’s majestic appearance is right at your knees. The pedestal is engraved with the famous line of Dr. Yamane from the first work “Godzilla.” The state of the unveiling ceremony of this bronze statue held on December 3, 1995 is on page 100.

国立歴史民俗博物館
National Museum of Japanese History

千葉県佐倉市にある「国立歴史民俗博物館」では、常設の展示品のひとつとして、高さ約2.5mのゴジラ像が飾られている。ゴジラがいるのは、2010年3月16日にオープンした、第6展示室「現代」の出口付近。第1展示室から順に日本の歴史・文化の流れを辿っていき、最後に現れるのがゴジラという、ゴジラファンから見れば非常に心憎い演出だ。展示テーマとの関係から、モデルには84年版『ゴジラ』に登場したゴジラが選ばれている。館内のミュージアムショップでは、このゴジラをあしらったクリアファイルも発売中だ。ぜひ、お土産にどうぞ。

At the National Museum of Japanese History in Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture, a 2.5m-tall Godzilla statue is displayed as one of the permanent exhibits. Godzilla is located near the exit of the 6th exhibition room “Contemporary,” which opened on March 16, 2010. From the first exhibition room, the history and culture of Japan are followed in order, and the last one to appear is Godzilla. The Godzilla that appeared in the 1984 edition of “Godzilla” was chosen as the model because of its relationship with the exhibition theme. At the museum shop inside the museum, clear files featuring this Godzilla are also on sale. Please take this as a souvenir.
