東宝は昭和二十六年九月に戦犯追放を解除された小林一三さんが社長に就任する。争議の後遺症を新興の東映と配給提携して乗り切り、二十七年からは宝 塚映画など傍系各社の作品を加全プログラムを自社製作でまかなうことにする。小林社長は金融力にものをいわせて、砧撮影所の整備や直営館百館運動を進め、「三等重役」(春原 政久監督)や「生きる」のヒットで、経営はようやく軌道に乗る。また、二十九年四月公開の「七人の侍」など、黒沢作品の面白さと質の高さが東宝映画の信用回復に大いに貢献した。

In September 1951, Ichizo Kobayashi, who was released from expulsion of war criminals, assumed the post of president of Toho. Overcoming the after-effects of the dispute through a distribution tie-up with the emerging Toei Company, and from 2015 onwards, the company will produce its own production program for the works of affiliated companies such as Takarazuka Films. President Kobayashi uses his financial strength to improve Kinuta Studios and promote the 100 Directly Managed Kankan Campaign. In addition, the fun and high quality of Kurosawa’s works, such as “Seven Samurai” released in April 2017, contributed greatly to the restoration of trust in Toho films.

大作「ゴジラ」誕生
Birth of the masterpiece “Godzilla”

その二十九年にもう一つ、東宝映画を特徴づける大作が現れた。「メトロポリス」「キングコング」「透明人間」など特殊撮影効果(SFX)を使った作 品は、美男美女とは別に映画の最大の魅力である。日本映画で特撮ものと言えば、だれもがまず「ゴジラ」を挙げるだろう。

In the 29th year, another masterpiece that characterizes Toho movies appeared. Works using special effects (SFX) such as “Metropolis,” “King Kong,” and “Invisible Man” are the greatest attractions of movies apart from handsome men and women. When it comes to special effects in Japanese movies, everyone will probably think of “Godzilla” first.

東宝は年間七十本近い公開作品を、ロマンスもの、喜劇、時代劇などのジャンル別で企画できるほど余裕ができた。その中に特撮による空想科学ものもあった。本多猪四郎監督は言う。

Toho has enough leeway to plan nearly 70 public works a year by genre, such as romance, comedy, and historical drama. Among them, there was also a science fiction by special effects. Director Ishiro Honda says:

「戦時中に軍との関係で兵隊の教育映画を作り、模型を使っ空中戦を解説したり、『ハワイ・マレー沖海戦』で成功して、製作ジャンルとして特撮が確立されるんです。『加藤隼戦闘隊』では助監督として円谷英二さんを手伝った。私は子供のころ科学が好きで、『こどもの科学』『科学画報』といった雑誌を夢中で読んでいた。科学が国の礎になると言われ、科学思想が一 種の流行をした時代だったんですね。その科学の進歩が生んだものとして映画もあった」

“During the war, I made educational films about soldiers in relation to the military, explained aerial combat using models, and succeeded in the Battle of Hawaii and Malaya, establishing special effects as a production genre. I helped Eiji Tsuburaya as an assistant director on Hayabusa Kato Battle Corps.When I was a child, I loved science, and I was absorbed in reading magazines such as Kodomo no Kagaku and Kagaku Gaho. Science is the cornerstone of the nation. It was an era when scientific thought became a kind of fad, and movies were born as a result of that scientific progress.”

本多さんは劇映画でデビューする前に記録映画「伊勢志摩」を撮っている。海女が取った真珠を伊勢神宮に奉納するシーンがあり、水中撮影もした。

Mr. Honda shot the documentary film “Ise-Shima” before making his feature film debut. There is a scene in which the pearls taken by the divers are offered to the Ise Grand Shrine, which was also filmed underwater.

「そのときに触れた海女の話映画にしたかった。ちょうど直木賞を受けた山田克郎の『海の廃園』が海女の話で、その映画化を第一作に選んだんです。それが『青い真珠』で、水中撮影がかなりのシーンを占めた。そこから田中友幸プロデューサに『キングコング』みたいなものをやらないか”と声を掛けられたんです。円谷さんたち も同じような企画を出されていて、最初は大ダコの話だった」

“I wanted to make a film about the story of the Ama that I encountered at that time. Katsuro Yamada’s Umi no Abandoned Garden, which just won the Naoki Prize, is a story about divers, and I chose to make it into a movie as my first work. That was The Blue Pearl, and underwater photography occupied quite a few scenes. From there, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka asked me if I wanted to do something like ‘King Kong.’ Mr. Tsuburaya had a similar project, and at first it was a big octopus story.”

マグロ漁船第五福竜丸がアメリカのビキニ環礁での水爆実験死の灰を浴び、乗組員に死者も出たのが同年三月だった。

In March of the same year, the Daigo Fukuryu Maru, a tuna fishing vessel, was exposed to the ashes of a hydrogen bomb test at the Bikini Atoll by the United States, and some of its crew members died.

「原爆、水爆の恐怖は科学万能という考え方への反省にもつながりました。水爆実験で何が起こるか分からない。そんな考え方から、香山滋さんに原案を書いてもらいましたが、あまりに暗い深刻な部分もあって、そのあたりをやわらげて『ゴジラ』は生まれたんです」

“The fear of atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs also led to reflection on the idea that science is omnipotent. I don’t know what will happen in the hydrogen bomb test. With that in mind, I asked Shigeru Kayama to write the original draft, but there were some dark and serious parts, so I softened those parts and ‘Godzilla’ was born.”
