Like many Godzilla fans my age I’ve been collecting for a long time. I’ve seen great merch come and go. And in many years past those collectibles were out of reach and just not affordable. I had a ten-year hiatus from collecting and the fandom after the release of Godzilla Final Wars in 2004. To celebrate Godzilla’s 50th anniversary and At that time Toho released the GODZILLA FINAL BOX: The 50th Anniversary DVD Perfect Box (『ゴジラ』生誕50周年記念DVD30枚組BOX) in 2005, promoted as “The last one, Godzilla”「最後の、ゴジラ｡」This amazing set contained 30 Godzilla DVDs (27 movies and 3 special discs). The big catch was a suit-sized soft-vinyl Godzilla head. I salivated over it, but back then it was virtually impossible to get despite the growing Internet and online shops. Times have changed but my desires have not. We are collecting in the best of times. What is released in Japan today arrives at our doorsteps tomorrow with great online shops and resources like Mandarake, Amazon Japan, Buyee Japan and more. I’m always searching and shopping. And when my eyes fell on that ultimate farewell Godzilla collectors set on Buyee, I had to grab it as I would have in 2004 if I could.

This amazing box set has less luster today because Godzilla movies are now collected in the higher resolution formats of Blu-ray 4K Ultra. Since then the DVDs were released in individual box sets with movie pamphlets and posters in the the Godzilla Complete Movie DVD Collectors Boxes (ゴジラ全映画DVDコレクターズBOX). Yet the prize of this set is still the Godzilla head and it has been elusive for years. And I’ve always wanted at least one Godzilla bust in my collection. Acquiring this piece has brought one home onto my shelf. And there was no better way to celebrate Godzilla’s 50th anniversary than the release of a Shodai Godzilla head. This suit-size head was carefully and meticulously recreated by Fuyuki Shinada, who was in charge of sculpting the monsters in Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001). The process was documented in a commercial (初代を再現した、彩色済・ゴジラヘッド（着ぐるみサイズ）付き！『ゴジラ・モスラ・キングギドラ 大怪獣総攻撃』で怪獣の造形を担当した品田冬樹氏が、初代ゴジラの頭部を着ぐるみサイズで再現。)

The creation of Godzilla Final Box Godzilla head recalls the original creation of Godzilla for the first film by Wasuke Abe, Teizo Toshimitsu, Eizo Kaimai and the Yagi brothers. Decades later, master modeler Yuji Sakai modeled the original Godzilla for the BOSS Commercial “The Faceless Star” (2019) celebrating suit-actor Haruo Nakajima. This Godzilla is on display at the Eiji Tsuburaya Museum in Sukagawa, Japan. This replica Godzilla head from the Final Box set adds a museum quality to any collection.

The Godzilla Final Box Godzilla Head is a gorgeous piece that surprises with its size and presence. This fabulous replica rests on a large black base (with「ゴジラ｣ inscribed) along with the 30-disc DVD collection covering 50 years of Godzilla history. Every Godzilla fan and collector would welcome this amazing set with open arms into his or her collection. The perfect DVD box was released on April 22, 2005 retailing at 99,750 yen. Twenty years later, a box set can be found for less but the value of the Godzilla head is as high as ever. If you have the opportunity to buy the set, you will not be disappointed.
