怪獣王ゴジラには、高圧電流以外にも弱点があるのをご存知だろうか?

Did you know that Godzilla, the king of the monsters, has other weaknesses besides high-voltage current?

それは何か。ゴジラの映画を見にくる観客の数、つまり、ゴジラファンの数だ。

What is it? The number of spectators who come to see Godzilla movies, that is, the number of Godzilla fans.

いくらゴジラが怪獣王とはいえ、見にきてくれるお客の数が少なければ、次回からの登板はありえない。

No matter how much Godzilla is the king of the monsters, if the number of customers who come to see him is small, it is impossible to pitch for the next time.

それに月日とともにゴジラに対する観客の見方も、恐怖の対象から身近な存在へと変わってきた。

それというのも、東宝の看板スターとなったゴジラには、もはや極端な汚れ役を演じる必要はない。「明るく楽しい怪獣映画」の主役を演じることが、ゴジラに課された使命とするならば、流行をいち早く採り入れたファンサービスをするのも仕事のひとつだったといえるだろう。

That’s because Godzilla, who became Toho’s signboard star, no longer has to play an extremely dirty role. If it was Godzilla’s mission to play the leading role in a “bright and fun monster movie,” it would be one of his jobs to provide fan service that quickly adopted the trends.

しかし、東宝の偉いところは、ゴジラが健全な怪獣路線に移行しても『フランケンシュタイン対地底怪獣』 「サンダ対ガイラ』『キングコングの逆襲』などといったハードな怪獣路線も製作していたことだ。

However, the great thing about Toho is that even if Godzilla moved to a healthy monster route, he also produced hard monster routes such as “Frankenstein vs. Underground Monster,” “Sanda vs Gaira,” and “King Kong Escapes.”

つけ加えておくと、身近な存在から子供の味方、正義のヒーロー怪獣となったゴジラは『ゴジラ対メガロ』の特写スチールでは、口に電柱をくわえ木枯し紋次郎ポーズを披露している。ついにゴジラは渡世人(渡世獣?)になってしまったのかと、ゴジラファンをドキドキさせてくれた。

In addition, Godzilla, who has become a child’s ally and a hero monster of justice from a familiar existence, is showing a Kogarashi Monjiro pose with a telephone pole in his mouth in the exclusive photograph for “Godzilla vs. Megalon.” At last, Godzilla made Godzilla fans thrilled, wondering if he had become a yakuza (a gangster?).
