夜のビル街に響くウェストミンスターチャイムの音。日本では学校のチャイムとして知られる音色が続くなか、音の主である銀座和光の時計塔が映し出され、深夜2時を告げる鐘が鳴る。これが本作の冒頭シーンである。

The sound of Westminster chimes echoing through the building streets at night. As the sound known as a school chime continues in Japan, the clock tower of Ginza Wako, which is the source of the sound, is shown, and the bell rings to signal 2 a.m. This is the opening scene of this work.

ウェストミンスターチャイムに正時の鐘が続くのは現在まで変わらない和光の時報のスタイルだが、これが始まったのは1954年の時の記念日(6月10日)のことであったという。54年と言えば、同年に公開された第1作「ゴジラ」では、ゴジラが和光を破壊するシーンがある。ゴジラは夜11時の鐘の音に反応し時計を手にかけるのだが、実際にはこの時期すでに、正時の鐘の前にチャイムが鳴るようになっていたのである。

The Westminster chime followed by the hour bell is the style of Wako’s time signal that has remained unchanged to this day, but it is said that this style began in 1954 on the anniversary of the hour (June 10th). Speaking of 1954, in the first film, Godzilla, released in the same year, there is a scene in which Godzilla destroys Wako. Godzilla picks up his watch in response to the sound of the bell ringing at 11 p.m., but in reality, the chime was already ringing before the hour bell.

また、現在の時計塔は文字盤の下にブロンズ製の唐草模様の装飾が施されているが、これは完成当初に存在した装飾を70年代に復元したもので、第1作及び本作の時点では失われていた。両作のミニチュアでは、いずれもその様子が再現されている。復元後にミニチュアが制作された例としては、イベント映像『怪獣プラネットゴジラ』(94年)があるが、縮尺の問題なのか、残念ながらこの部分の再現はオミットされた。

In addition, the current clock tower has a bronze arabesque decoration under the dial, but this is a restoration of the decoration that existed at the time of completion in the 1970s, and is similar to the one in the first and this work. It was lost at that point. The miniatures of both works recreate this situation. An example of a miniature being produced after restoration is the event video “Monster Planet Godzilla” (1994), but unfortunately the reproduction of this part was omitted, perhaps due to scale issues.

和光のゴジラ映画への登場は、本作以降しばらく間が空き、「ゴジラvsキングギドラ」(91年)が久々の登場例となった(劇中の新聞記事に写真が登場)。その後、「ゴジラvsデストロイア』(95年)の実景合成カットでゴジラと再共演を果たし、「シン・ゴジラ」(16年)では62年ぶりとなるゴジラによる破壊が描かれた。そして、最新作の「ゴジラ-1.0」(23年)にも、和光が登場するようである。いち早く公開された特報では、廃墟と化した銀座の街と、半壊状態の和光が映し出されている。これはゴジラの破壊によるものなのか、それとも…?

It has been a while since Wako appeared in a Godzilla movie, and his first appearance was in “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah”(1991) (a photo appeared in a newspaper article during the movie). After that, he co-starred with Godzilla again in the real scene composite cut of “Godzilla vs Destoroyah”(1995), and in “Shin Godzilla” (2016), the destruction caused by Godzilla was depicted for the first time in 62 years. And it seems that Wako will also appear in the latest work, “Godzilla-1.0” (23 years old). A special report that was released early on showed the city of Ginza in ruins and Wako in a partially destroyed state. Is this due to Godzilla’s destruction or…?
