Godzilla advances to America!

ゴジラが海外で大々的に知られるようになったのは、第1作『ゴジラ』が日本で公開された2年後の1956年のこと。アメリカに渡った第1作が『Godzilla King of the Monsters!』のタイトルで公開され、大ヒットを記録してからだ。

Godzilla became widely known overseas in 1956, two years after the first film, “Godzilla,” was released in Japan. It was after the first work in the United States was released under the title “Godzilla King of the Monsters!” and it was a big hit.

といっても、オリジナルがそのまま上映されたわけではなく、当時の人気俳優レイモン ド・バーの登場シーンが新たに追加撮影され、彼が演じるアメリカの新聞記者スティー ヴ・マーチンが、日本を訪れた際に遭遇した ゴジラ事件を回想するというスタイルに編集直されている。

However, the original was not screened as it was, and the appearance scene of the popular actor Raymond Burr at the time was newly shot, and when the American newspaper reporter Steve Martin, played by him, visited Japan. It has been re-edited in a style of reminiscing about the Godzilla incident that he encountered.

この再編集版は、57年に日本に逆輸入され、『怪獣王ゴジラ』のタイトルで凱旋公開された。

This re-edited version was re-imported to Japan in 1957 and released to the public under the title “King of the Monsters Godzilla”.

基本的なストーリーはオリジナルと大差ないが、芹沢大助博士、尾形秀人、山根恵美子、山根恭平博士らがマーチンとからむシーンでは代役を起用しているため、ほとんどが後ろ向き。また、マーチンと会話を交わす日本人役の俳優が片言の日本語だったり、ゴジラの存在が確認されるより前に山根博士がゴジラについて語っていたり、ゴジラの進路が数寄橋→国会議事堂→ ・和光→放送塔・議事堂・ 松坂屋というように滅茶苦茶だったり、日本人の目から見ると、苦笑してしまうシーンも少なくない。とはいえ、マーチンによる一人称形式のドラマには、オリジナルとはひと味 違う緊迫感が漂っていたのも事実である。

The basic story is not much different from the original, but most of the scenes are backwards because Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, Hideto Ogata, Emiko Yamane, and Dr. Kyohei Yamane use substitutes in the scenes involving Martin. In addition, the actor who plays the Japanese role who talks with Martin speaks broken Japanese, and Dr. Yamane talks about Godzilla before Godzilla’s existence is confirmed, and Godzilla’s course is Sukibashi → National Diet building → ・Wako → Broadcasting Tower・City Hall・Matsuzakaya, and so on. Nonetheless, it is also true that Martin’s first-person drama had a different sense of urgency than the original.

バー演じるマーチンは、84年『ゴジラ』の 海外版である『ゴジラ1985』にも再登場。かつて日本でゴジラ事件に遭遇した人物としアメリカ国防省に招かれ、30年ぶりに日本に現れたゴジラの動向を巨大スクリーンで見守るというシーンがつけ加えられた。

Martin, played by Burr, also reappeared in “Godzilla 1985,” the overseas version of “Godzilla” in 1984. He was invited to the US Department of Defense as a person who once encountered the Godzilla incident in Japan, and a scene was added in which he watched the movement of Godzilla, which appeared in Japan for the first time in 30 years, on a huge screen.

なお、オリジナルの第1作『ゴジラ』は、2004年になってようやくアメリカで初上 映されている。

The first original work, “Godzilla,” finally premiered in the United States in 2004.
