Iguanodon when he became a model for Godzilla

チェコの画家ズデニェックブリアンは「前世界史」 で知られるが、最近偕成社から出た「35億年・生命の歴史ブリアンの古生物図鑑」 (構成・文/かこさとし、監修/小畠生)で、その見事な画稿の図録を見ることができる。ただし複写が巧くなく、カンバスのテクスチャーが乱反射して色褪せた感が否めないのが残念である。 この本は図版数も少ないので、ここはぜひとも豪華版を期待したいところだ。ブリアンの絵は、香山滋や伊福部昭も、ゴジラ製作の参考にしたもので、怪獣を語るになくてはならないバイブルである。1905年に生まれたブリアンは、生物の進化に深い関心をもち、チェコの首都プラハのアカデミー・ファインアートで動植物の絵を学んでいる。その後プラハ大学の古生物学の教授について古生物を専門に描き始めた。81年に亡くなった。写真はゴジラのモデルになった際のイグアノドンの画。

20 Czech painter Zdenek Burian is known for his “Prehistoric History.” You can see the pictorial record of the wonderful manuscript. However, it is a pity that the copy is not good, and the texture of the canvas is diffusely reflected and faded. This book has a small number of illustrations, so I would definitely like to expect a deluxe edition here. Burian’s paintings were also used by Shigeru Kayama and Akira Ifukube as references for the production of Godzilla, and are indispensable bibles when talking about monsters. Born in 1905, Brian has a deep interest in the evolution of living organisms and is studying animal and plant painting at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague, Czech Republic. Afterwards he began to paint paleontology for a professor of paleontology at the University of Prague. He died in 81. His photo is a picture of Iguanodon when he became a model for Godzilla.
