三十年ぶりに、ゴジラは復活した――。

After 30 years, Godzilla has returned.

昭和二十九年当時、日本は敗戦の痛手をようやく忘れ、復興の途につこうとしていた。

In 1945, Japan had finally forgotten the pain of defeat and was on the verge of recovery.

第一作「ゴジラ」のタイトルに賛助・海上保安庁”と見られるごとく、自衛隊はこの年の七月に保安隊からようやく昇格したばかり、とても一国を護るに足る軍備とはいえなかった。

The Self-Defense Forces had only been promoted from the National Security Forces in July of that year, and as the title of the first Godzilla movie suggests, they were not equipped to protect a single country.

そこへ登場したゴジラは、戦争の悪夢の再現であった。その襲撃は「東京大空襲」の再来に他ならなかった。不意をつかれたという意味では、人間側の驚きやうろたえ方も、よく似ていた。

The Godzilla that appeared there was a reenactment of the nightmare of war. The attack was nothing but a repeat of the “Great Tokyo Air Raid.” In the sense that they were caught off guard, the way humans were surprised and flustered was very similar.

今日、日本の国力はGNP世界第三位となり、戦力も世界第八位に匹敵するものに増強された。大国の核保有量は地球上の人類を何百回も絶滅し得るほどのものとなった。

Today, Japan’s national power ranks third in the world in terms of GNP, and its military power has increased to the level of the eighth largest country in the world. The nuclear arsenals of major powers have grown to the point where they could wipe out humanity on Earth hundreds of times over.

日本の堅持する“非核三原則”の意義は大きい。

The “three non-nuclear principles” that Japan firmly upholds are of great significance.

では“核”という最終兵器が、ゴジラ退治に有効かというと、まるで反対である。

Now, if you ask me whether the ultimate weapon called “nuclear” is effective in exterminating Godzilla, it is quite the opposite.

新作「ゴジラ」でこの点の深追いはしていないが、いつの日にか人類は「ゴジラ」を核攻撃するという愚挙に出て、手ひどいしっぺ返しをくうことだろう。

Although the new “Godzilla” does not explore this point in depth, someday humanity will make the foolish decision to attack “Godzilla” with nuclear weapons, and there will be a terrible retaliation.

なぜなら、ゴジラこそ“核”の分身であり、人類の持つ“暗黒部分”の具現化されたものだからである。

This is because Godzilla is the “nuclear” alter ego and the embodiment of the “dark side” of humanity.

地球を被う“核”の肥大化に伴い、今日のゴジラは、身長五十メートルから八十メートルへ、体重は二万トンから五万トンに変化した。破壊力も凄まじいものとなった。

Today’s Godzilla has changed from 50 meters to 80 meters in height and from 20,000 tons to 50,000 tons in weight as the “nucleus” covering the earth has expanded. Its destructive power was also tremendous.

人類の憎しみあいが強まれば強まるほど、ゴジラは巨大化し、パワーアップして現れるのだ。

The stronger the hatred between humans becomes, the bigger and more powerful Godzilla becomes.

その、人類と怪獣の対決のありさまを、映画はスペクタクルとして描き出した訳だが、その面白さを紙上で再現したのが、本書である。

The movie depicts the confrontation between humans and monsters as a spectacle, but this book recreates the fun of it on paper.

映画のフィルムをまるまる一本焼き増しし面白そうな場面をコマの状態で抜き出した。おかげで映画の躍動感を、かなり写しとることができたのではないかと思う。

I reprinted an entire film of the movie and extracted interesting scenes in frames. Thanks to this, I think I was able to capture a great deal of the dynamism of the movie.

収録した脚本とあわせ読んでいただければ、すでに映画をごらん下さった方にも、まだの方にも、充分「ゴジラ」をお楽しみいただけるはずである。

If you read it along with the recorded script, both those who have already seen the movie and those who have not yet seen it should be able to fully enjoy “Godzilla.”

次回、「ゴジラ」がこの世に現れるとき、世界はどのように変化していることだろう?

How will the world change the next time “Godzilla” appears in this world?

あいも変らず軍拡競争を続けているなら、ゴジラの暴れ方も、無制限に激しいものになるに相違ない。

If the arms race continues as usual, Godzilla’s rampage will no doubt become even more violent.

神が、おごれる人類に警告のためにつかわした”聖獣”としてのゴジラが、この世に現れなくてすむには、二つの道がある。

There are two ways to prevent Godzilla from appearing in this world as a “sacred beast” sent by God to warn the proud human race.

ひとつは、核を盛大に爆発させて人類が自らを滅すこと、もうひとつは、平和への道をさぐること。どちらが王道かは、自明である。

One is for humanity to destroy itself by detonating a nuclear weapon, and the other is to find a way to peace. It is obvious which one is the royal road.
