Tsuyoshi Nonaka’s Good Friends

1966年生まれ。フリーデザイナー。1987年から2014年まで、(株)バンダイで数多くのキャラクター玩具の開発に携わった。なかでも特撮ヒーロー玩具や「超合金魂」シリーズなどのコレクター向け商材の企画、デザインに多く関わる。最近作は「グリッドマンユニバース」など。「宇宙船」にて、「SUPER MODE of Toei Metal Spirit」を連載中(ホビージャパン刊)。

Born in 1966. freelance designer. From 1987 to 2014, he was involved in the development of numerous character toys at Bandai Co., Ltd. Among other things, he is involved in the planning and design of merchandise for collectors such as tokusatsu hero toys and the “Soul of Chogokin” series. His recent works include “Gridman Universe.” Currently serializing “SUPER MODE of Toei Metal Spirit” in “Uchusen” (published by Hobby Japan).

ゴジラのライバル怪獣として真っ先に名前が挙がるのが、本作でデビューしたキングギドラだと思います。まばゆいばかりの黄金にかがやく巨体と三本の鎌首は、「どこからでも、かかってこいや!」と対戦相手に啖呵を切っているようです。

I think that King Ghidorah, who debuted in this work, is the first to be named as a rival monster of Godzilla. With its dazzling golden glowing gigantic body and three sickle necks, it seems to be reprimanding its opponents, saying, “Come at me from anywhere!”

個人的に印象的なのは、あのでかさ(ゴジラとの対比で瞬時にそうとわかる)で平然と空を飛びながら引力光線周囲に撒き散らかす圧倒的な暴れっぷり。特撮作品ならではの「操演」による重力無視な動きが、キングギドラに圧倒的な個性を与えています。

Personally, what left an impression on me was the overwhelming rampage that scattered around the gravitational rays while flying calmly in the sky with that gigantic size (you can instantly tell by comparing it to Godzilla). The gravity-ignoring movement of the special effects work’s “manipulation” gives King Ghidorah an overwhelming individuality.

さて、そんな魅力たっぷりギドラの当時のおもちゃといえば、お世辞にも「あまり似ていない」ソフビ人形くらいしか思いつきません。翼のシルエットも違うし、三本の首も短く小ぢんまりとまとまってしまって迫力なし。そもそもサイズもゴジラと比較して小さすぎ。オトナになった今では、翼の形状もツノの生えた頭部も、とにかくソフトビニールの製法に向いていない、玩具メーカー泣かせのデザインだったと理解できますが、子供心には「なんか違う!」人形の一つでした。似たようなことは、劇中では四つん這いのアンギラスが、なぜかすっくと二本足で立ちあがってしまっていることにも感じていましたが、きっと当時のメーカー担当者が「二本足の怪獣のほうが売れる」と判断されたのかと‥‥‥。

Well, speaking of such charming Ghidorah’s toys at that time, I can only think of soft vinyl dolls that are “not very similar” to flattery. The silhouette of the wings is also different, and the three necks are short and snugly put together without any impact. First of all, the size is too small compared to Godzilla. Now that I’m an adult, I can understand that the shape of the wings and the head with horns are not suitable for the soft vinyl manufacturing method, and that it was a design that made the toy maker cry. It was one of the “something different!” dolls in my childhood mind. I also felt something similar in the way Anguirus, who crawls on all fours, stands up on his two legs for some reason. I wonder if it was judged that it would sell better.

話をキングギドラに戻すと、空飛ぶキングギドラのおもちゃがあってもよかったのでは? というのが、今回のお題です。ラドンやモスラなど飛行系の怪獣は結構有名どころが多いですから、シリーズ化も可能です。

Returning to King Ghidorah, the theme this time is, wouldn’t it have been nice to have a flying King Ghidorah toy? Flying monsters such as Rodan and Mothra are quite famous, so it is possible to make them into a series.

元ネタは、昔のおもちゃ屋さんでよく天井から吊り下げられていた、くるくると旋回飛行をする旅客機のアレです。現在でもウルトラマンなどが手に入ります。曲がりなりにも飛びそうな形をしていないとうまく飛ばないのでは?と疑われそうですが、これが意外にプロペラの推進力と吊り下げるポイントさえそこそこ調整されていれば、絶対飛びそうにもない物体がきれいに旋回運動をしてくれます。30年以上前に「大旋回シリーズ」というSDのウルトラマンやガンダムをモデルにした同種の商品があり、まんまるの団子みたいな物体が、キレイに旋回飛行をしていました。

The original story is that of an airliner that twirls and flies, which was often hung from the ceiling in toy stores in the olden days. Ultraman is still available today. Some people might suspect that if it doesn’t have a shape that makes it look like it’s going to fly, it won’t fly well. Surprisingly, if the propulsive force of the propeller and the suspension point are adjusted appropriately, an object that is unlikely to fly will turn beautifully. More than 30 years ago, there was a similar product modeled on SD’s Ultraman and Gundam called the “Great Swivel Series,” in which a perfectly round dumpling-like object was making a beautiful circling flight.

そしてキングギドラであれば、翼のはばたき、首と尾の不規則な上下動も外せない要素ですから、プロベラとは別にギミック用のモーターも必要かもしれません。全体の重量がかさむので、糸を天井(もしくはそれに該当する旋回運動の起点)にしっかりと取り付けなければいけません。より現代的にするのであれば、口の中を黄色く点滅発光させたり、鳴き声などのELギミックを充実させることもできるでしょう。

And in the case of King Ghidorah, flapping wings and irregular vertical movement of the neck and tail are essential elements, so a motor for gimmicks may be necessary in addition to the propella. The string must be firmly attached to the ceiling (or corresponding pivot point) due to the overall weight. If you want to make it more modern, you can also make the inside of the mouth flash yellow and enhance EL gimmicks such as barks.

全長、全幅ともに350mほどの大きさを想定していますが、これが部屋の中でぐるぐると飛び回ったら、さぞや迫力があるのでは?と妄想しています。うっかり落下したら危険極まりないので、実現は難しいかもしれませんが、自主特撮映画の小道具としても便利なのではないかと思っています(笑)。

I’m envisioning a size of about 350mm in both length and width, but I’m delusional that it would be impressive if it flew around the room. It would be extremely dangerous if it accidentally fell, so it may be difficult to realize, but I think it would be useful as a prop for an independent special effects movie (laughs).
