小学校の三年生で、私は飛行機に興味をおぼえた。将来は、自製の飛行機で世界一周をするのが、最大の夢だった。

In the third grade of elementary school, I became interested in airplanes. In the future, my biggest dream was to fly around the world in my own airplane.

朝五時に起きて窓辺にランプを灯し登校前までセッセと模型飛行機を作る。学校がひけると、かばんをほうり出して夕食後までまた作る。

I woke up at 5 a.m., lights a lamp in the window, and builds model airplanes diligently until I went to school. When school ends, I threw down my bag and waited until after dinner to cook again.

飛行機作りの合間には、なけなしの貯金で買った子供の映写機に巻紙を裁断した紙製のヒルム(フィルム)をかけ、一コマ一コマにマッチ棒の体操を描いて動かして楽しんだ。

While building airplanes, I hung a paper hilm (film) made from cut paper on the children’s projector, which I had bought with my little savings, and enjoyed moving it by drawing matchstick gymnastics frame by frame.

Commentary

円谷英二は、子どものころ、パイロットにあこがれていました。飛行機の模型を作るのも得意で、写真を見ながら本物そっくりに作り上げてしまうほどでした。

When Eiji Tsuburaya was a child, he aspired to be a pilot. He was also very good at making model airplanes, so much so that he would look at photos and make them look exactly like the real thing.

そして大人になり、映像の世界へ入った英二はそのあふれるほどの才能を発揮して「特撮」という全く新しいジャンルを築き上げたのです。

As an adult, Eiji entered the world of film and demonstrated his immense talent to create a completely new genre called “special effects.”
