若くて経験が少ないだけ、この新しい仕事に慣れるのも早かったのだ。なまじ経験が豊富だと、どうしても「あのときの仕事の方がよかった。」「あの映画では、こんなことはやらなかった。」と、不満も出てきてしまうのである。

Since he was young and had little experience, he was able to get used to this new job quickly. If you have a lot of experience, you can’t help but feel dissatisfied with things like, “The work I did that time was better,” or “I didn’t do this in that movie.”

着ぐるみのゴジラはもう、中島の仕事といってもよかった。

そう言われるだけで、つい「よし来た!」と、腰を上げてしまう。そのあとでハッと気がつく。自えんりょ分が呼ばれたわけでもないのに……。遠慮気味に手塚を見ると、ニコニコと笑って他のスタッフと話をしている。「もうゴジラの中身はおまえにまかせた。」とでも言うように。

Just hearing that makes me sit up and say, “Okay, I’m here!” After that, I suddenly realized. Even though he wasn’t even invited… When I looked at Tezuka hesitantly, he was smiling and talking with other staff members. As if to say, “I’ve left the contents of Godzilla to you.”

いくら若くて張り切っていても、やっぱりゴジラの中は暑いし、息苦しい。けれど中島はある変化が自分の中で起こっていることに気がついた。仕事を続けるうちに、以前感じていた孤独感がどんどあなんうすらいでいくのだ。小さなのぞき穴から外を見ると、広いセットにたくさんのビルや家が建ってきょだいかいじゅういる。道路もはるか下の方に見える。まるで自分が本当に巨大な怪獣になったような気がして、なんだかスカッとした気分になる。

No matter how young and enthusiastic he is, it’s still hot and stuffy inside Godzilla. However, Nakajima noticed that a certain change was occurring within him. As he continues to work, the loneliness he previously felt becomes more and more apparent. When you look outside through a small peephole, you’ll see a large set of buildings and houses filled with children. The road can also be seen far below. I feel like I’ve become a giant monster, and I feel refreshed.

ふと中島は、足もとが明るくなったのに気がついた。

Suddenly, Nakajima noticed that the light had become brighter under his feet.

「春ちゃん、ここ暗いから気をつけて。ヒューズもあるしな。」

“Haru-chan, it’s dark in here so be careful. There’s also a fuse.”

手塚の声だった。最初は2人でつとめていたゴジラの中身も、今は自分がひとりでつとめている。かいちゅうその手塚が懐中電灯を持って、中島ゴジラの足もとを照らしている。

It was Tezuka’s voice. Godzilla, which was initially handled by two people, is now handled by me alone. Tezuka holds a flashlight and shines at the feet of Godzilla Nakajima.

「テッちゃん、すみません。」

“Tecchan, I’m sorry.”

「なに言ってんだよ。これだってりっぱなゴジラの仕事だ。」

“What are you talking about? This is Godzilla’s fine work.”

そう言って、手塚は笑った。

Tezuka said and laughed.

スタンバイになると、3台のキャメラが一斉に自分の方に向く。

Once on standby, all three cameras will turn towards you at once.

「おれはB2俳優。今まで1台のキャメラだって、まともにこっちを向くことはなかったのに、おれは今、主役なんだ。」

“I’m a B2 actor. Up until now, even a single camera had never looked directly at me, but now I’m the main character.”

そう思うと、本当に気分がよかった。

When I thought about it, I felt really good.

「スタート!」

“Start!”

キャメラがまわり出す。すると一瞬で自分がゴジラに変身して、大暴れすることができるのだ。

The camera starts rolling. Then, in an instant, he can transform into Godzilla and go on a rampage.

「いいね、中島君。いいよ、いいよ。まさにゴジラだ。」

“Good, Nakajima-kun. Good, good. It’s just Godzilla.”

円谷は、スタッフのことはときどき怒った。けれど、役者である手塚と中島を怒ることは決してなかった。「2人には苦労をかけている。」そんな思いがあったのだろうか。

Tsuburaya sometimes got angry with the staff. However, he never got angry at the actors Tezuka and Nakajima. “I’m putting a lot of effort on both of them.” I wonder if that’s what he thought.

「オヤジさん、すみません。今キャメラ、まわってませんでした。」

“Old man, I’m sorry. The camera wasn’t rolling just now.”

ある日、キャメラマンの富岡素敬が、うっかりキャメラをまわしそこなったことがあった。富岡は、照れ笑いをしながら円谷を見た。

One day, cameraman Mototaka Tomioka accidentally missed the turn of the camera. Tomioka looked at Tsuburaya with a shy smile.

「ふざけるな!なんでもカバーしてもらえると思ったら、大まちがいだ!」

“Don’t be silly! If you think you’ll have everything covered, you’re making a big mistake!”

めったに聞かない大声に、スタジオがシーンと静まり返った。それまで、少しのミスは円谷が持ち前のアイデアとテクニックで、なんとか乗り切ってしまうことがよくあった。しかし、それが当たり前のような雰囲気になってしまったスタッフに、がまんできなかったのだ。

The studio fell silent at the sound of a voice that was rarely heard. Up until then, Tsuburaya had often managed to overcome minor mistakes using his unique ideas and techniques. However, I couldn’t put up with the staff, who had become like this was the norm.
