昭和40年男にとって、最初に体験したゴジラ映画が1971年公開の『ゴジラ対ヘドラ』だった、という者は多いだろう。ゴジラ映画史上最強と言われる敵怪獣へドラに魅せられた男、増子直純がその魅力を語る!

For many Showa40 men the first Godzilla movie they experienced was “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” released in 1971. Naozumi Masuko, a man fascinated by Hedorah, the enemy monster said to be the strongest in the history of Godzilla movies, talks about its charm!

Naozumi Masuko/Naozumi Masuko Born in Hokkaido in 1968. Vocalist of Ugamiten, a rock band formed in 1984. He has appeared in many commercials, movies, and dramas, making use of his friendly character. He is also famous as a collector of Hedorah. Angataten will release a new album “more-AA-janaica” in March this year.

公害問題で揺れる1971年の日本、そのなかでもヘドロの集積地として全国的に有名になっていた静岡県の駿河湾田子の浦を舞台に、水中から生まれ、ドロドロと今にも溶けそうなフォルムをもった怪獣が、硫酸ミストで次々と人々を殺傷しながら、ゴジラと対決する。怪獣映画でありながら得体の知れないムードを醸し出すへドラは、カッコいい怪獣対決を期待してきた子供たちを唖然とさせ、サイケデリックな映像と社会問題をダイレクトに取り入れた思い切り大人の世界を見せつけた。トラウマ映画と名高い『ゴジラ対ヘドラ』は、時が経ち、今では多くのファンに支持される傑作と呼ばれている。

Set in Japan in 1971, when Japan was rocked by pollution problems, Tagonoura in Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, which was famous nationwide as a sludge accumulation area, was born from the water and had a form that looked as if it would melt at any moment. A monster confronts Godzilla while killing and injuring people one after another with sulfuric acid mist. Despite being a monster movie, Hedorah exudes a mysterious atmosphere, shocking children who had been expecting a cool monster showdown, and showing a boldly adult world that directly incorporates psychedelic imagery and social issues. “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” is famous as a trauma movie, and as time has passed, it is now considered a masterpiece that is supported by many fans.

公害問題が生み出した史上最強の怪獣

「『ゴジラ対へドラ』は、その後の怪獣映画、作品を作っているクリエイターに、ものすごい影響を与えた作品だと思います」

“I believe that ‘Godzilla vs. Hedorah’ had a tremendous influence on subsequent monster movies and the creators of those works.”

そう語るのはロックバンド、怒髪天の増子直純。ヘドラに魅せられ、ヘドラのソフビコレクターとしても知られるほどのマニアぶりを発揮しているのはご存じのとおりだが、意外にも映画館で同作を観たのは大人になってからだという。

So says Naozumi Masuko of the rock band Angataten. As you know, he is fascinated by Hedorah and is such a fanatic that he is known as a Hedorah soft vinyl collector, but surprisingly, he didn’t see the same movie at a movie theater until he was an adult.

「俺が子供の頃は、『週刊少年マガジン』や『テレビランド』に載っているヘドラの造形で知るだけでした。映画を観たくて仕方がなかったけれど、当時は観ることができなくて、二十歳を過ぎて観たら、これは相当尖った映画だと驚いた。71年という時代の空気もあるし、アート寄りの描き方でもある。あの時代、映画に限らずテレビなどでもエログロ的なものが許容されていたし、この映画にもアングラ的な要素が多分にある。それを東宝という大メジャーの映画会社が作ったことが大きいよね」

“When I was a child, I only knew about Hedorah from the figures that appeared in ‘Weekly Shonen Magazine’ and ‘TV Land.’ I really wanted to see the movie, but I couldn’t watch it at the time, so when I saw it in my twenties, I was surprised to find that it was a very edgy movie. It has the atmosphere of the 1971 era, and the drawing style is more artistic. At that time, erotic and gory things were allowed not only in movies but also on television, and this movie also has many underground elements. The fact that it was made by a major film company called Toho is a big deal.”

今ではコンプライアンス等々の点から絶対に作れない描写も多々ある。

Nowadays, there are many depictions that cannot be created due to compliance and other reasons.

「そのひとつが、子供がバタバタ倒れるシーン。あと人間は白骨になっちゃうのに、同じヘド口の中にいてもなぜか猫はそうならない。そこもちょっと不思議だけど(笑)。それに、映画全体のトーンがゴジラ映画とは思えないほど照明が暗い。昼間の戦いが多いけれど、それ以外は夜の描写が多く、最後のゴジラとの戦いも夜でしょう。逆に、東宝の大プールで撮影したという、海洋汚染のシーンは明るくて、それが何度も出てくる(笑)」

“One of them is the scene where a child falls flat on the ground. Also, humans turn into skeletons, but for some reason cats don’t, even though they’re in the same mouth. That’s a bit strange, though (lol). Also, the whole movie… The tone is so dark that you wouldn’t think it’s a Godzilla movie.There are a lot of battles in the daytime, but other than that there are a lot of night scenes, and the final battle with Godzilla is also probably at night. On the contrary, it was filmed in Toho’s large swimming pool. The scene of ocean pollution is so bright that it comes up again and again (lol).

ヘドラとは、海洋汚染、大気汚染が騒がれていた時代でこそ生まれた、公害怪獣である。映画の背景には公害問題があった。

Hedorah is a pollution monster that was born in an era when ocean and air pollution were a hot topic. The background of the film was the issue of pollution.

「1作目の『ゴジラ』も、核兵器という人間が生み出したものによって生まれた怪獣だから、反核というテーマをもっていたし、大人が真剣に社会問題をとらえて斬り込んでいく姿勢は、ずっとありましたよね。映画というカルチャーの重さが今とは違って、世間にも影響力があったし、娯楽作のなかに社会的なテーマを入れているのも、この時代までの日本映画がもっていた姿勢でしょう。『へドラ』の公害問題も坂野義光監督のメッセージが込められているんだと思う」

“The first Godzilla movie also had an anti-nuclear theme because it was a monster created by humans, which is nuclear weapons, and there was always an attitude of adults taking social issues seriously and attacking them. The weight of film culture was different than it is now, and it had an influence on society, and the inclusion of social themes in entertainment works was an attitude that Japanese films had up until this time. I think director Yoshimitsu Sakano’s message about the pollution problem in ‘Hedorah’ is also included.”
