During my stay in Japan several months ago, I was hunting for an in-depth book on ゴジラ (1954). I found it in 初代ゴジラ研究読本 (Shodai Gojira Research Reader). It surpassed my expectations and it may the best book I’ve seen on 1954. The 320 pages of Shodai Gojira detail the making of the original Gojira providing comprehensive information about the cast, creators, and story. Most of the photography is black and white. However, there are several color photos of the original poster art and promotional events. There are special interviews and roundtable discussions with the creators of the first Godzilla. I was surprised to find what is called a pictorial sketch (or storyboards) of the script. This is priceless and a must have for anyone investigating the original Godzilla! This makes a great companion for 怪獣ゴジラ, the original Godzilla story.
