50 Questions for Tsuburaya

In 1967, Japanese children asked Toho Director and President of Tsuburaya Productions, Eiji Tsuburaya, 50 questions in the weekly Shonen Magazine (講談社 少年マガジン1967年(昭和42年), pp. 175-189). I had to get that issue and found it on Mandarake. Below are the first eight questions.

【答え】わたしが作った怪獣は、どれもみな、自分の子どものようにかわいいものばかりです。
でも、とくにすきな怪獣といえば、やはり、それは、ゴジラです。苦心して作った、わたしの怪獣第一号ですから。

But when it comes to my favorite monster, it’s Godzilla. It’s the first monster I made with great effort.

① 朝六時におき、新聞や本を読みます。たまには、朝の運動のためにさんぼもします。
① I wake up at 6 am and read newspapers and books. Occasionally, I also go to workouts for morning exercise.

② 八時半には家を出で撮影所に行きます。九時ごろにつきます。
② At 8:30, leave the house and go to the studio. It will arrive around 9 o’clock.

③ 九時十分ごろには撮影開始。特殊撮影技術課は、撮影所の二階にあります。
③ Shooting starts around 9 o’clock. The Special Photography Technology Division is located on the second floor of the studio.

④ 夜に、撮影所内で会議などに出ます。新しい作品をみんなで考えるのです。

【答え】怪獣がこわすビルは、石こうで作ります。かたまるのに約一日かかりますが、強くおすと、すぐばらばらにこわれてしまいます。型を作り、それに石こうを流しこんでかためるのですが、たまには、ウエハースなどで作ることともあります。まどに、ゼラチン(にかわの一種)をはったり、中に小さいな電球をしかけてビルらしく見せるのです。

[Answer] Buildings that monsters break are made of plaster. It takes about a day to harden, but if you push it hard, it will break apart quickly. We make a mold and pour gypsum into it to harden it, but sometimes We make it with wafers. Put gelatin (a kind of glue) on the windows, or put a small light bulb inside to make it look like a building.

【答え】底に特殊プロペラのついたはこに赤や黄やみどりにそめたのりを、つめます。そして、表面に、粉の絵の具で「ウルトラQ」の文字を書き、プロペラをゆっくりまわすと、字がくずれていきます。これを撮影したフィルムを逆回転させると、くずれた字がウルトラQという字になるように見えるのです。

[Answer] Fill the seaweed with a special propeller on the bottom with red, yellow or green seaweed. Then, write the letters “Ultra Q” on the surface with paint powder and slowly turn the propeller, and the letters will collapse. When the film on which this is shot is rotated in the reverse direction, the broken letter appears to be the letter Ultra Q.

【答え】怪獣を、てんじょうから下げたピアノ線でしばっておき、ウルトラマンが投げたかっこうをすると、怪獣をつり上げます。これをスローモーション撮影すると、ウルトラマンが投げたように見えます。地面にもゆっくりおろすので、中の人はいたくありません。

[Answer] We hold the monster with a piano wire that is hung from the balance, and when Ultraman throws it, the monster will be lifted. If you shoot this in slow motion, it looks like Ultraman threw it. The person inside does not hurt because it is slowly lowered to the ground.

▶︎円谷先生は、どれなきっかけで、映画監督になったのですか。
石川県金沢市　高柳　進

【答え】映画にはいったきっかけはお花見のときのけんかです。十六さいのとき、おもちゃ工場の発明技師をしていたところのことでした。けんかのなかなおり役になったひとが、映画のカメラマンだったのです。

特撮をはじめるようになったのは、そのころ、忍術映画がさかんで、いろいろくふうする必要があったからでした。怪獣にきょうみをもったのは、キングコング(昭和三年に作られたアメリカ映画)を見たときからです。この映画は、いまでも、テレビの映画気劇場にときどき登場していますよ。

▶ ︎How did Mr. Tsuburaya become a movie director?

[Answer] The reason for entering the movie was the fight during cherry blossom viewing. At the age of sixteen, he was an inventor of a toy factory. The person who played the role of Kenka was a movie cameraman.

I started tokusatsu because there were so many ninjutsu movies at that time that I had to do various things. It wasn’t until I saw King Kong (an American movie made in 1945) that I got a monster. This movie still appears occasionally in the movie theater on TV.
